Ratchaburi is a province in western Thailand, about 80 kilometres west of Bangkok, and it packs three different trips into one map. The east is flat river plain around the Mae Klong, where the Damnoen Saduak floating market lies. The middle has a river town with caves, temples and a National Museum. The west is hill country along the Myanmar border, around Suan Phueng, where you find hot springs and waterfalls. Wikipedia says the province is known for the floating market and for its dragon jars.

This guide uses only facts we could check on 16 October 2026 against the sources listed at the end, and it says where a source is old or uncertain. For hotels, read where to stay in Ratchaburi or the Thai version, ที่พักราชบุรี.

What Ratchaburi is like

Wikipedia gives the province an area of about 5,196 square kilometres and describes it in three parts: the border with Myanmar in the west, about 60 kilometres long, the Tenasserim mountains and forests in the middle west, and the central wetlands fed by the river. The Mae Klong flows through Ratchaburi town. Because the western mountains are mostly limestone, there are several caves with stalactites, and some hold large colonies of bats that leave at dusk. Wikipedia also notes Mon communities in the northern districts and Karen communities near the Myanmar border.

The history is older than most visitors expect. Wikipedia says the provincial town has been traced to the Dvaravati period and that the moated town of Khu Bua lies southeast of it. Wikivoyage adds that Ratchaburi was the meeting point of ancient traders and a gateway to Burma. You do not need to care about any of this to enjoy a day out, but it explains the brick ruins and old temples between the markets and the caves.

Damnoen Saduak floating market

The Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is in Damnoen Saduak district, about 100 kilometres southwest of Bangkok according to Wikipedia, which says it is often considered the most famous floating market. The canal behind it was dug between 1866 and 1868 on the order of King Rama IV to link the Mae Klong and Tha Chin rivers, and Wikipedia says that after a new road reached Ton Canal in 1981, private entrepreneurs set up the modern market along it. The market is made up of three smaller markets: Ton Khem, the largest, Hia Kui, which has souvenir shops on the canal banks, and Khun Phitak, the smallest and least crowded.

Timing matters. Wikipedia says the market is often busiest from 07:00 to 09:00 and active until noon, and that a roof now lets it run every day. It also says the market is crowded with tourists and is considered a tourist trap, with wares that tend to be overpriced and bargaining that is common. In practice that means arriving early, bargaining politely and treating it as a lively photo-and-snack stop rather than a bargain hunt. We did not verify entrance fees, boat prices or opening hours on an official page, so ask your hotel or the boat operator on the day. If you want to compare it with other markets near Bangkok, read our Bangkok day trips guide and the Thai guide to floating markets at Damnoen Saduak, Amphawa and Maeklong.

Caves, parks and the town

Wikipedia's Chom Bueng district article says that Khao Bin cave is regarded as the most beautiful of the district's caves, with many stalactites and stalagmites and a holy pond, and that it is named after a rock formation that looks like a flying bird. Wikivoyage says the cave is about 22 kilometres from the town centre. The same Wikipedia article says that Chomphon cave was renamed by King Chulalongkorn on his 1895 visit because a stalactite resembled a field marshal's epaulette.

Closer to town, Wikivoyage lists Khao Ngu Stone Park, a series of small limestone hills next to Mueang Ratchaburi with a walk that cuts through the hills, many macaques and food vendors, and says it is free. It also describes Wat Phra Si Ratana Mahathat (Commons files call it Wat Mahathat Worawihan), an ancient temple on the west bank of the Mae Klong whose prangs were probably copied from Angkor, and the murals at Wat Khongkharam in Photharam, some 22 kilometres away. The Ratchaburi National Museum, on Waradet Road according to Wikivoyage, covers the province's history, archaeology and traditional arts and the cultures of the Lao Song, Karen and Thai Yuan.

For a short walk with a view, Wikivoyage lists Khao Talu Miti, described as a 10-minute steep hike to an open cave at the top of a hill. It also lists the Bo Khloung hot stream and the nine-level Kaew Chan waterfall (see Suan Phueng below). Check current access before you go: Wikivoyage's note says the Khao Laem trail in Suan Phueng was closed until further notice as of January 2025, and we could not confirm whether it has reopened.

Dragon jars and local crafts

Wikivoyage describes dragon jars as an iconic Ratchaburi product, large ceramic jars that feature a dragon and can be seen all over the province. A display in the Ratchaburi National Museum shows two such jars with dragon patterns; a nearby panel in English says Ratchaburi is notable for dragon-patterned water jars and ceramicware. We could not verify which workshops welcome visitors or what they charge, so if buying a jar matters to you, ask your hotel for a workshop that sells to travellers and check how you will carry it. Wikivoyage also lists Sanamya Market, the main market in the middle of town, with food vendors that become more active in the evening.

More short stops

Wikivoyage lists a few smaller stops that fit between the main sights. Khao Wang is a hill about 44 metres high, 2 km west of the town, where King Rama V had a palace built and received the Portuguese minister in 1887; the palace area was later given to a monastery, Wat Khao Wang. Pong Yub, at Ban Tha Kheay, is a steep cliff made by ground subsidence that Wikivoyage compares to Phae Mueang Phi in Phrae. Football fans can see Ratchaburi F.C., which Wikivoyage says plays at Dragon Solar Park, capacity about 10,000, 10 to 15 minutes from the town. Wikivoyage also says trail running is popular around Suan Phueng and that the province hosts many trail events. We did not check match dates, trail rules or access to any of these, so confirm locally.

Suan Phueng, hot springs and waterfalls

Suan Phueng is a district in the western part of the province, bordering Myanmar. Wikipedia says the name means bee garden and comes from Ficus trees that bees build hives in. Wikivoyage describes the Bo Khloung hot stream as five kilometres beyond Suan Phueng, with mineral water that flows all year from the Tenasserim range and ranges from 50 to 68 degrees Celsius, and says a branch road leads to the Kaew Chan waterfall, which has nine cascades and a walk to the ninth level of about two hours. Waterfalls vary by season, so check the water level before you plan a swim.

Wikipedia says Chaloem Phrakiat Thai Prachan National Park, established on 25 January 2012, is part of the Kaeng Krachan forest complex and has hot springs and waterfalls open to visitors, along with hiking and camping. Wikivoyage lists 100 baht for adults and 50 baht for children with hours of 08:00 to 18:00, but that entry was last edited in January 2025 and we could not confirm it with the park authority, so check with the Department of National Parks before you go.

Suan Phueng is far from the town and the floating market. Plan a car or a transfer, and decide whether you want a night in the hills or a long day trip. Hotels there include J.W. Boeklueng Hotspring Resort, which says it is near the entrance to Boeklueng Hot Springs; see our stay guide for the others.

Getting to Ratchaburi

Ratchaburi is about 80 km west of Bangkok. Wikivoyage describes three ways in. By car, take Phetkasem Road (Highway 4) through Nakhon Pathom, or take Highway 338 from Bangkok and join Highway 4 near Nakhon Chai Si. By bus, it says the Transport Company runs air-conditioned buses from the Southern Bus Terminal about two hours away, with a bus every 20 minutes between 06:00 and 23:00, but that page's website link is dead and the information is not recent, so confirm with the operator. By train, it says the State Railway of Thailand runs trains from Hua Lamphong and Thonburi (Bangkok Noi) in about two hours; check the State Railway of Thailand for the current timetable.

When to go

We could not verify a single best season for Ratchaburi. Wikivoyage lists two fairs: the Ratchaburi Tourism Fair in February and March on the grounds of the city hall, and the Sweet Grape and Damnoen Saduak Floating Market Week Fair around March and April. For the weather on your dates, check the Thai Meteorological Department, and read our guide to Thailand's best time by region. The floating market is at its best early in the morning whatever the season.
