Pathum Thani is the province Bangkokians know from the train line, the Phahonyothin Road and the universities, and visitors from abroad mostly skip. That is a pity, because it packs three different outings into a short ride from the capital: a theme park and science museums for families in the east, old Mon temples along the Chao Phraya in the west, and the big wholesale produce markets that feed the city behind the scenes.
This guide uses Wikipedia, Wikivoyage, pages of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the official sites of the places, and the hotel page we could read on 16 October 2026. Where we could not check something with an official source we say so and suggest you confirm before you travel. Only one hotel in the province passed our check against its own official site, so we have not built a hotel comparison page; the stay section gives advice by area instead.

What Pathum Thani is like
Wikipedia says the province lies north of Bangkok and is part of the Bangkok metropolitan area, and that in many places you cannot tell where one province ends and the other begins because both sides are equally urbanised. Pathum Thani town is the administrative seat, but Rangsit, in Thanyaburi district, is the largest populated place. The land is low alluvial flats of the Chao Phraya, crossed by canals that feed rice paddies, and Wikipedia states there is no forest area in the province. Come for the town life, temples and museums, not for mountains or waterfalls.
On tourism, Wikipedia gives figures for 2024: 2,961 hotel rooms and about 3.46 million visitors, of whom 88.8 percent were Thai. That tells you this is mostly a destination for Thai families on day trips by car or train, not a stop on foreign tour itineraries, and that rooms are limited compared with Bangkok.
History explains the temples. English Wikipedia says the city dates to a settlement founded by Mon migrants from Mottama in Myanmar around 1650, originally called Sam Khok. Wikivoyage and Thai Wikipedia give 1659, in the reign of King Narai, for the Mon arrival, so we show both. In 1815 King Rama II visited, the Mon people offered him lotus flowers, and he renamed the town Pathum Thani, meaning lotus flower town; Wikivoyage dates the renaming to 23 August of that year. The provincial seal still shows a pink lotus with two rice stalks.
Dream World
Dream World is in Thanyaburi district and, according to Wikipedia, opened on 12 November 1993. It is split into four zones: Dream World Plaza, Dream Garden, Fantasy Land and Adventure Land. Wikipedia says it has more than 40 imported rides and attractions, including three roller coasters. TAT describes about 160 rai (roughly 25 hectares) with a cable car, a fairy-tale zone with a castle and a bread house, rides such as Train to Space, Viking and Snowland, and a colourful parade on weekends.
TAT lists hours of 10:00 to 17:00 Monday to Friday and 10:00 to 18:00 on weekends and holidays. The page is undated and we could not read a current ticket price anywhere we could open, so we give none. The official site gives the address as 62 Moo 1, Rangsit-Ongkharak Road (Km 7), Bueng Yitho, Pathum Thani 12130, telephone 0-2577-8666, and its menu has a ticket-price page. Check opening days and prices there before you go. Wikipedia also records that the park closed on 21 October 2011 because of flooding and reopened on 10 January 2012, which is worth remembering if you travel late in the rainy season.
National Science Museum at Khlong 5

Wikipedia says the National Science Museum Organisation was established on 30 January 1995 and runs four museums: the Science Museum, the Natural History Museum, the Information Technology Museum and the Rama 9 Museum, all at Technopolis, Khlong 5, Khlong Luang. TAT adds that the first floor of the Science Museum has a photo gallery and a giant model of the Earth, the second floor has a life-like reconstruction of the Australopithecus fossil nicknamed Lucy and displays on space travel, and other floors cover Thailand's geology and human anatomy.
TAT's page gives hours of Tuesday to Friday 09:30 to 16:00, weekends and public holidays 09:30 to 17:00, closed Mondays, and an entry fee of 100 baht. But the same page still lists Covid-era health rules, so it is old; treat it as a rough guide and confirm by phone (0-2577-9999 or [email protected], as TAT lists) before you go. The address is Rangsit-Nakhon Nayok Road, Khlong Ha, Khlong Luang, Pathum Thani 12120. With children, allow at least half a day, and we would keep Dream World for another day because both are big enough to fill one.

Khlong Rangsit and the Thung Luang plain
Wikipedia says Thanyaburi district was founded in 1901 by order of King Rama V; the name means rice city, and it was created as a twin to Min Buri, fish city. Khlong Rangsit, the district's main water source, was the first canal built in Siam for irrigation, according to Wikipedia, and it is also why Khlong Luang district has its name. Lam Luk Ka district was once the open grassland of Thung Luang, and its name comes from a marsh shaped like a crow's foot; crow sculptures still decorate buildings and lampposts along its side roads.
You will not see much paddy in central Rangsit, but Wikipedia says farmland is still 53.5 percent of the province, with rice as the main crop and vegetables such as lemongrass, lettuce, water spinach and holy basil. If you want to see fields, drive off the main roads towards Nong Suea or Lam Luk Ka. We have no checked list of viewpoints, so we do not point to one.
Mon temples on the Chao Phraya

The west of the province is where Mon history is easiest to see. Thai Wikipedia says Wat Samlae, in Ban Krachaeng subdistrict of Mueang Pathum Thani district, is a Dhammayut temple on the Chao Phraya built by Mon migrants in the early Rattanakosin period under King Rama II. It was restored in 1869 and received its royal boundary grant in 1871. Its original name was a Mon one, Pae Thamsa, after a temple in a Mon town, and it later changed to Sam Lae and then Samlae. The temple has a group of Mon-style chedis in front of the old ordination hall, a preaching hall built entirely of teak, and a Mon-style scripture cabinet.

Further north, Wat Bot in Sam Khok district is also on the river. Thai Wikipedia says it was founded in 1827 and is known for a 28-metre statue of Somdet Phra Buddhacharn (To Phrommarangsi) in a teaching pose, built in 2006. Inside is Luang Pho Lua, a sandstone Buddha in the subduing-Mara posture whose head was cut off by thieves around 1964, and a fish-feeding spot sits on the riverbank. Sam Khok district itself is known for pottery: Wikipedia says a 1726 Dutch map labels it a pottery-making village, and the name means three mounds, the ones used to make jars. Wikipedia also mentions the Sam Khok waterside market, but we found no opening times from an official source, so we give none.

On the western side of the province, Wat Chedi Hoi in Lat Lum Kaeo district has a stranger story. Thai Wikipedia says the temple was founded on 20 December 1988, a huge quantity of fossilised giant oyster shells was dug up, and the abbot built chedis from the shells in 1995, which gave the temple its name. It also has a museum of Buddha images, antiques and Sam Khok jars.
Wat Phra Dhammakaya
Wat Phra Dhammakaya is in Khlong Luang district. English Wikipedia says it was founded in 1970 by the nun Chandra Khonnokyoong and Luang Por Dhammajayo, started as a meditation centre and became an official temple in 1977. It belongs to the Maha Nikaya fraternity and the Dhammakaya tradition, which teaches Dhammakaya meditation, and its grounds include the large Dhammakaya Cetiya. Wikipedia also records that the temple has faced controversy and a government crackdown. We take no view on that; readers who want more can follow the Wikipedia link in our sources. Before visiting, check the temple's own announcements for access and dress rules, because we did not verify opening times or rules.
The produce markets behind Bangkok
Si Mum Mueang Market is on Phahonyothin Road at Km 29, Khu Khot, Lam Luk Ka. Thai Wikipedia describes it as a central market for vegetables and fruit, open since 1 July 1983 on 453 rai, and says that in 2020 it ran 24 hours a day with 16 sub-markets. Talat Thai is run by the same company, and the province's Thai Wikipedia page lists Talat Thai, Si Mum Mueang, Phun Sap and Rangsit as the major wholesale markets. They are not tourist markets in the floating-market sense, but they show where the capital's food comes from. We did not check visitor access.
For food, Wikivoyage says boat noodles are sold everywhere, especially along the Rangsit to Nakhon Nayok road, and that the town is known for jumping prawns and grilled fish, with khanom kuichai stuffed with vegetables, taro and bamboo shoots as a local snack.
Getting to Pathum Thani

Wikivoyage puts the centre of the province 46 km north of Bangkok. By car it gives three routes: via Bang Khen and Rangsit, via Nonthaburi and Pak Kret, or via Bang Yai and Lat Lum Kaeo, plus the Bang Pa-in to Pak Kret Expressway exiting at Bang Phun and turning left onto Highway 346. By bus it lists lines 29, 39, 59, 503, 510 and 555 passing Future Park, but that information is not recent, so check current routes. By train, Wikivoyage says northern and north-eastern lines pass through the province with Rangsit as the main station, and express trains skip the minor stations; check the State Railway of Thailand for timetables.

Booking the trip
When we opened the 12Go page for Bangkok to Pathum Thani in a browser on 16 October 2026, searching for Sunday 18 October with 2 travellers, it listed 58 trips with prices from THB 70 to THB 2,300. By type it showed 52 trains from THB 70 and 6 taxis from THB 1,062. The trains we saw were operated by Thai Railway, and the taxis came from Than Car Service and Kim Transfers Thailand. Those figures are what the page showed on that search, not a promise for your date. We link it as a convenient place to compare, and some links on this site may earn us a commission; this does not change the times or fares you see.
When to go
Wikipedia gives Pathum Thani a tropical savanna climate: dry and warm winters, temperatures rising until May, and a monsoon season from May to October with heavy rain and somewhat cooler days. It records a maximum of 42.8 degrees Celsius in April and a minimum of 17.5 in January, with 1,225 mm of rain over 109 rainy days in a year. For an open-air park, avoid April afternoons; in the rainy season keep a spare day or pick the indoor museums. Check forecasts with the Thai Meteorological Department and read our guide to Thailand's best time by region.
Where to stay
We could not verify enough hotels on their own official sites to build a comparison page. One passed: Novotel Bangkok Future Park Rangsit. Its official page on Accor gives the address as 114 Paholyothin Road, Prachathipat, Thanyaburi, says it has 226 rooms and suites across four room categories, says it is five minutes from the Future Park Rangsit mall, and lists an outdoor swimming pool. We do not know current prices or availability, so check with the hotel.
For the rest, here is advice by area:
- Rangsit and Future Park: the best base for a Dream World or science museum day, closest to both, with trains into Bangkok.
- Pathum Thani town and Sam Khok: suits the riverside temple day, but we have not verified hotels in this area.
- Stay in Bangkok and make a day trip: the simplest choice if you want restaurants and transport choice. See where to stay in Bangkok and getting from the airports into Bangkok.

FAQ
How far is Pathum Thani from Bangkok?
Wikivoyage puts the centre of the province 46 km north of Bangkok. We have no checked distance for Rangsit, Dream World or the museums, but all of them are inside the province.
Can I visit Pathum Thani as a day trip from Bangkok?
Yes, if you choose one theme: Dream World or the science museums for a full day, or the riverside temples for half a day. We would not try to fit the amusement park and the museums into the same day because both are large.
What is the easiest way to get to Pathum Thani?
According to 12Go on 16 October 2026 it is mostly trains: 52 trips from THB 70, plus 6 taxis from THB 1,062. With your own car, Wikivoyage lists three routes from Bangkok. Check train times with the State Railway of Thailand.
What are the opening hours of Dream World?
TAT lists 10:00 to 17:00 Monday to Friday and 10:00 to 18:00 on weekends and holidays, but we do not know when that page was updated. Check the official Dream World site or call 0-2577-8666 before you go.
Where is the National Science Museum?
At Technopolis, Khlong 5, Khlong Luang district, according to Wikipedia and TAT; the group's four museums share the site. TAT's address is Rangsit-Nakhon Nayok Road, Khlong Ha, Khlong Luang, Pathum Thani 12120. Its listed hours and fee are old, so call 0-2577-9999 first.
Is there nature in Pathum Thani?
Not much. Wikipedia says there is no forest area in the province. The highlights are canals, paddy land, riverside temples and the amusement park. For hills and waterfalls, look at a neighbouring province such as Nakhon Nayok.
Why is it called Pathum Thani?
The name means lotus flower town. Wikipedia says King Rama II renamed the town from Sam Khok after Mon residents offered him lotus flowers in 1815.
Should I stay in the province?
Only one hotel passed our check on its own official site, Novotel Bangkok Future Park Rangsit. If you do not need to sleep in Rangsit, staying in Bangkok and taking the train for the day is the simpler choice.
Can I visit Wat Phra Dhammakaya?
It is in Khlong Luang district and draws strong interest. We did not verify opening times or rules, so check the temple's own announcements first, and read the neutral background on Wikipedia, linked in our sources, to decide for yourself.
