Lamphun Travel Guide: Temples, Pa Sang, Li, Doi Khun Tan

Lamphun is the province most visitors see as a half-day from Chiang Mai: one famous golden chedi, a museum, and back by dinner. That undersells it. The old Hariphunchai capital has a cluster of temples inside a few kilometres of each other, Pa Sang has a weaving tradition and a hilltop stupa, Li district has a limestone waterfall in Mae Ping National Park, and the mountains on the eastern edge hold Doi Khun Tan and a railway tunnel. This guide is for people planning a day or two there.

Everything here was checked on 16 October 2026 against the sources listed below, mainly the provincial tourism site run by the Lamphun Provincial Administrative Organisation and the national park authority. We say where sources disagree and where we could not verify something, and we give no prices. For hotels, see our where to stay in Lamphun guide, or in Thai, ที่พักลำพูน.

What Lamphun is, and how big a trip it needs

Wikipedia calls Lamphun the smallest province of the northern region and lists Chiang Mai, Lampang and Tak as its neighbours. It says the town sits in the Ping River valley between the Thanon Thong Chai Range in the west and the Khun Tan Range in the east, with rice fields and longan orchards around it. That geography explains the trip shape: the town and its temples are compact, while the waterfall, the national park and the golf resorts are each a separate drive.

Our advice: give the town half a day if you are based in Chiang Mai, and add a second day only if you want Pa Sang, Li or Doi Khun Tan. Staying overnight is worth it if you would rather see the temples without a rushed transfer back; the stay guide covers three areas.

The 12Go page for Bangkok to Lamphun was titled Bangkok to Lamphun by train, bus, flight and taxi when we opened it in a real browser on 16 October 2026. It listed operators including Bangkok Airways, Cherdchai Tour North, Kim Transfers, Nok Air, Sombat Tour, Sritawong Tour, Thai AirAsia, Thai Airways, Thai Lion Air, Thai Railway, Thai Vietjet, Thailand Limo by Datum and Viriya Tour. It showed 12 departures a day, the earliest at 4:00 AM and the latest at 10:47 PM. We do not quote its prices, and we ignore the distance on that page because it did not look right. These are the figures the page showed on that day, not a promise.

Things to do in Lamphun

The easiest order is by area: the temples and museum in town, then Pa Sang, then Li, then Mae Tha. Sections below follow that order.

Wat Phra That Hariphunchai

The provincial tourism site describes Wat Phra That Hariphunchai as a major landmark in the heart of Lamphun, with a golden Lanna-style chedi, a pair of stucco lions at the entrance and a main golden viharn. It lists the temple as open every day from 06:00 to 21:00 and says it is the zodiac temple for people born in the Year of the Rooster. The page gives no entry fee, and we could not verify one.

Wat Phra Yuen

The same site says Wat Phra Yuen has a history of over 1,000 years and a standing bronze Buddha, 18 cubits tall, at the centre of the chedi. It lists the temple as open daily from 06:00 to 18:00, which is earlier than the main temple closes, so visit it first.

Wat Chamthewi (Wat Kukut)

The provincial site says Wat Chamthewi, also known as Wat Kukut, has been part of Lamphun for over 1,000 years and is famous for its square-based chedi, one of the earliest examples of Lanna architecture. Inside it lists murals, an ancient Buddha statue and the stupa holding the relics of Khruba Siwichai. The Queen Chamathewi Monument and Wat Rommaniya Ram (Wat Ku Lamak) are on the same provincial route following the footsteps of the queen.

Hariphunchai National Museum and the textile institute

The provincial site lists the Hariphunchai National Museum as closed on Monday and Tuesday and open Wednesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 16:00. It describes exhibits of ancient artefacts and historical photographs, including Lanna and Rattanakosin artworks. The same site lists the Hariphunchai Hand-woven Textile Institute as open Monday to Friday 08:30 to 16:30 and closed at weekends, and names Lamphun Yok Dok silk as its best-known product, registered as a geographical indication. If you want to see weaving, go on a weekday.

The Kuang and Ping rivers: Tha Nang Gate and Mae Ping National Park

Two rivers shape the province. The provincial site says a moat once ran beside the Tha Nang city wall, following the Kuang River, which it calls the main and historically important river of Lamphun; the laterite-and-brick gate stands three metres tall. The Ping valley gives the province its overall shape, and Mae Ping National Park, covering 1,004 square kilometres per Wikipedia, holds the waterfall described below. We use "Kuang and Ping" here for these two rivers; if you were looking for a specific place by that name, tell us and we will add it.

Pa Sang

Pa Sang is the district to the south of town. The provincial site says the stupa behind Wat Phra Phutthabat Tak Pha is reached by a 469-step Naga staircase, with views at the top, and that the temple is roughly 19 kilometres from Lamphun city. It also lists a Pa Sang itinerary that links an ancient temple, a local temple, a coffee shop in a wooden house and community handwoven crafts. We could not verify fees or visiting hours for the temple, so ask on arrival.

Li district and Ko Luang waterfall

The provincial site says Ko Luang Waterfall lies within Mae Ping National Park in Li district. It describes seven tiers dropping from a cliff about 20 metres high into an emerald pool, with limestone formations on the cliff faces, and lists it as open daily 08:30 to 16:30. It says life vests can be rented for swimming. Li is the south of the province, so give it a separate day or a long half-day by car; we could not verify the road conditions or the water level by season.

Doi Khun Tan National Park and the railway tunnel

The national park authority says Doi Khun Tan National Park covers Mae Tha district in Lamphun and parts of Lampang, with 255.29 square kilometres and heights of about 325 to 1,373 metres. It names the Khun Tan tunnel as the longest railway tunnel in Thailand, built by Germans. Wikipedia gives the tunnel as 1,362.10 metres long and says Khun Tan Station at its northern end is the highest railway station in Thailand at 578 metres. The park offers bungalows and tent areas through its booking site; see the stay guide. The park is shared with the Lampang guide.

Longan season

Lamphun is known for longan. Wikipedia says the town is surrounded by rice fields and orchards of the popular fruit, celebrated in a festival every August, and that kuaitiao lamyai, a stewed pork noodle soup with dried longan, originated here. We could not verify the harvest dates or the festival dates for this year, so check with the provincial tourism office before planning around them. The tourism site lists a weekend Cultural Market at Rot Kaew Road that ran from 27 September 2025 to 4 January 2026; it was a past event when we looked, so check whether it returns.

The seasons

We did not find an official rainfall or temperature table for Lamphun that we could quote. The provincial site says Ko Luang Waterfall is wrapped in forest that keeps it cool and refreshing year-round, but it gives no month-by-month water levels. As a rule, check conditions before a waterfall or national-park trip, and book mountain stays ahead for weekends and holidays.

Where to stay

Our stay guide checks eight stays against their own official websites, in three areas:

  • Lamphun town: Baan La Poon Hotel, The Grand Jamjuree Resort, Royal Princess City Lamphun and GRAND PA Hotel & Resort.
  • Mae Tha and Doi Khun Tan: Gassan Khuntan Golf & Resort and the national park's bungalows and tent areas.

When is the Hariphunchai National Museum open?

The provincial tourism site lists it as closed Monday and Tuesday and open Wednesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 16:00. Hours can change, so check before you go.
