Nakhon Pathom Guide: Phra Pathom Chedi, Palace, Markets

An old town about 56 km from Bangkok, easy as a day trip

Nakhon Pathom is about 56 km west of Bangkok, and Wikivoyage places it in the Bangkok Metropolitan Area. It is home to Phra Pathom Chedi, which Thai Wikipedia records at 120.45 m, the tallest stupa in Thailand. Most visitors go and return the same day: take a train or bus from Bangkok, walk around the stupa, eat in the town's markets, and, if time allows, add Don Wai floating market or Sam Phran.

This guide uses only what we could read on the sources listed below on 16 October 2026. We did not check every entry fee or opening time against an official page, so it says where each figure comes from and what to confirm before you travel. If you plan to continue west afterwards, read our Kanchanaburi guide.

What Nakhon Pathom is like

Wikivoyage says the town used to be by the sea, but the shifting coastline now puts it about 50 km inland, and that archaeological finds date back to the 4th century, with the first mention of a stupa in 675 CE. Thai Wikipedia says the province is believed to be the site of an old Dvaravati-period town, with a lot of historical and archaeological evidence. Wikivoyage adds that the present stupa was completed in 1870 at the command of King Rama IV.

The centre is small enough to walk around the temple, with a night market selling cheap food, according to Wikivoyage. Outside town, Sam Phran and Nakhon Chaisi districts sit on the Tha Chin River, an area of fruit orchards and riverside markets. English Wikipedia lists the neighbouring provinces as Suphan Buri, Ayutthaya, Nonthaburi, Bangkok, Samut Sakhon, Ratchaburi and Kanchanaburi, so it combines easily with other trips.

Getting to Nakhon Pathom

The train is the most direct option because Nakhon Pathom is a junction. Wikivoyage says the southern line from Bangkok stops here and the line to Kanchanaburi and Nam Tok branches off, that trains from Thonburi station arrive faster than those from Hualamphong, and that Nakhon Pathom station does not sell advance tickets: you can only buy on the day. Check current timetables and rules with the State Railway of Thailand.

Southern Bus TerminalPublic bus, lines 83 and 997Wikivoyage says 40 baht in first class, about an hour in good traffic, every 10 minutes from 04:10 to 21:30; this is older information, so check before you go
BangkokMinibus to Big C Nakhon PathomWikivoyage says you can ask to be dropped in front of Phra Pathom Chedi, and that a taxi from Big C costs 60 baht
BangkokDrivingWikivoyage describes the old Phetkasem Road (Highway 4) or the newer route past Buddhamonthon and Nakhon Chaisi (Route 338)

The 12Go page lists trips from several operators in one place. We opened it in a real browser on 16 October 2026, searching Sunday 18 October for two travellers. It showed 37 trips, THB 70 to 4,500, of which 11 were trains from THB 70 and 26 were taxis from THB 1,462. Those are the figures the page showed at that moment, not guaranteed fares.

Where the sources disagree

TopicWhat we found
Height of Phra Pathom Chedi120.45 m (both Wikipedias); Wikivoyage gives both 120 m and 127 m on the same page
How big the stupa isThai Wikipedia: tallest in Thailand; English Wikipedia: second tallest in the world; Wikivoyage: the largest in the world
Sanam Chandra PalaceWikipedia describes five buildings and a Ganesh shrine; Wikivoyage says it has been closed for renovation since the early 2020s with no reopening date announced

Use the more cautious statement when planning. If you want to go inside the palace, check its current status before leaving home, and when you quote the stupa's height, use 120.45 m.

Heads up

Wikivoyage says Sanam Chandra Palace has been closed for renovation since the early 2020s and no official reopening date has been announced. We found no official page confirming the current status, so do not plan on being able to enter the buildings. Check with the Fine Arts Department or the province first.

What to see

Phra Pathom Chedi

This is the town's main sight. English Wikipedia gives a base circumference of 235.50 m. Wikivoyage says you cannot go inside the stupa, but you can walk around it in the inner courtyard, and that a giant golden Buddha on the south side is always busy with worshippers; there are also many smaller halls around the chedi. Wikivoyage lists an entry price of 60 baht without citing an official page, so confirm it at the gate.

Sanam Chandra Palace

Wikipedia says King Vajiravudh built the palace complex about a kilometre from Phra Pathom Chedi, and that part of the site has been Silpakorn University's Sanam Chandra Palace Campus since 1965. Wikivoyage mentions the monument to Ya Leh, the king's dog, and describes the university grounds as pleasant to wander, though the palace itself is closed as above. If you want the gardens and lake, check which areas you can enter.

Don Wai Market

Wikipedia describes a riverside market on the Tha Chin River behind Wat Don Wai in Bang Krathuek subdistrict, Sam Phran District. Wikivoyage says it keeps the look of a market from King Rama VI's time and mostly sells food: desserts, fish, fruit and vegetables. For other floating markets near Bangkok, see our Bangkok day trips. We did not verify Don Wai's days and opening hours on an official page, so check before you go.

Wat Sam Phran and Rose Garden

Wikipedia says Wat Sam Phran is in Sam Phran District, around 40 km west of Bangkok, was officially registered in 1985, and is sometimes called the Dragon Temple. Wikivoyage describes a 17-storey pink cylindrical building with a red-and-green dragon sculpture around its full height. For the Rose Garden (Suan Sam Phran), Wikivoyage lists floral displays, Thai-style houses and a Thai cultural show each afternoon; we could not confirm current show times, so check first.

Orchards, boat rides and more

Wikivoyage lists several things to do: boat tours on Khlong Maha Sawat past pomelo, guava, sweet coconut and orchid farms; pomelo orchards in Nakhon Chaisi; orchards along the Tha Chin River in Bang Chang, Khlong Chinda and Chinda Market, said to be known for grapes, mangoes, sweet coconuts and rose apples; and cruises from the Sam Phran District Office. It also lists Buddhamonthon, with a walking Buddha image about 15.8 m tall, the Thai Film Archive (Wednesday to Sunday 09:30 to 17:30, free, by the Wikivoyage entry) and Wat Sisathong with its giant Rahu statue. These are secondary sources and we did not check them against official pages, so confirm hours and fees.

When to go

We did not check month-by-month weather for Nakhon Pathom against an official source, so we will not name a best month. Check the Thai Meteorological Department for your dates, and bring water and an umbrella, because the temple courtyards are open to the sun. What the sources can tell you is the festival calendar. Wikivoyage says Songkran runs from 13 to 17 April around Phra Pathom Chedi, with processions and dragon and lion dances; a food and fruit fair is held around Chinese New Year, about January to February, in the temple grounds; the Phra Pathom Chedi fair runs from the 12th waxing day to the 4th waning day of the 12th lunar month; and Loy Krathong is held at Sanam Chandra Palace. Because the palace is closed, confirm where this year's Loy Krathong takes place. If you want fewer crowds, avoid festival days.

Where to stay

We have no hotel list for Nakhon Pathom. Our rule is that a stay page needs at least eight hotels whose facts we checked against their own official sites, and we did not reach that number, so this section gives area advice only, based on the information above.

  • Near Phra Pathom Chedi: good if you want to see the temple early, before crowds, and walk to the night market Wikivoyage describes.
  • Around Sanam Chandra Palace: about a kilometre from the temple, next to the Silpakorn University grounds.
  • Sam Phran and Nakhon Chaisi on the Tha Chin River: suits you if the floating market, orchards and boat rides are the point.

Because Nakhon Pathom is roughly one to two hours from Bangkok, many visitors do not stay overnight. If you do, check the map, the hotel's own site and the booking platform you use. We have not checked any prices.
