Phayao is a small province in upper northern Thailand built around a lake. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) calls Kwan Phayao the biggest freshwater lake in the north and the fourth biggest in the country. The town runs along the lake's eastern shore, with Wat Si Khom Kham, Wat Tilok Aram and the walking street all close together. Beyond town there are national parks with warm waterfalls, misty mountain viewpoints and, in the east, the Tai Lue district of Chiang Kham.

This guide uses only facts we could check on 16 October 2026 against the sources listed below, and it says where they disagree, especially on park fees and opening hours, which change. There is no separate where-to-stay page for Phayao yet: only seven hotels passed our rule of a fetchable official site with checkable text, and our standard is eight. The stay section near the end gives area advice and the hotels we did verify.

What Phayao is like

Wikipedia says Phayao began as a small kingdom in the 11th century that grew to cover parts of today's Chiang Rai, Phrae, Lampang and Nan. Lan Na and Nan attacked it in 1338 and it was absorbed into Lan Na; the city was deserted during Burmese rule. It was re-founded in 1843 under Rama III as a frontier city against the Burmese army at Chiang Saen, joined Chiang Rai Province in 1897, and became a province in its own right on 28 August 1977. The provincial seal shows Phra Chao Ton Luang, the great Buddha image of Wat Si Khom Kham.

The land is the valley of the Ing River, hemmed in by the Phi Pan Nam Range. Wikipedia names three big mountains around the valley: Doi Luang at 1,694 m, Doi Khun Mae Fat at 1,550 m and Doi Khun Mae Tam at 1,330 m. There are nine districts. Wikivoyage describes Phayao as peaceful and modestly developed, once the centre of an independent city state before Lan Na absorbed it in the mid-14th century. Think slow days: a lakeside walk, a temple, a drive to a waterfall. It is not a nightlife town.

Getting to Phayao

Phayao town is on Phahonyothin Road (Highway 1). Wikivoyage says it is about 700 km from Bangkok and "100km northeast of Chiang Mai", but the same page's driving directions from Chiang Mai give about 150 km, which is the figure to plan a drive by.

FromHowWhat the sources say
BangkokBusWikivoyage says buses run regularly from Mo Chit; the 12Go route page showed 19 buses when we opened it
BangkokDriveWikivoyage gives almost 700 km via Sing Buri, Phitsanulok and Phrae, then Highway 1
Chiang MaiBusWikivoyage lists four a day from Chiang Mai Bus Terminal 3, about 3 hours
Chiang MaiDriveRoute 118 then 120 through Lampang, then Highway 1, about 150 km

In town, Wikivoyage says there are tuk-tuks at the bus station, and the main lakeside sights are walkable. The national parks and Chiang Kham are far apart and we found no verifiable public transport to them, so plan on a rental car or a hired driver.

Booking transport

The 12Go page for Bangkok to Phayao showed 28 trips, from THB 672 to 19,125, when we opened it in a real browser on 16 October 2026, searching Sunday 18 October for two travellers. It listed 19 buses from THB 672 (operator Transport Co) and 9 taxis from THB 8,583. Those are the figures the page showed that day, not guarantees, and they change with the date and seats left. We link it as a convenient comparison, and some links on this site may earn us a commission at no cost to you.

If you want Phu Sang, Doi Phu Nang and Chiang Kham as well as the town, think about a rental car from the start. TAT puts Phu Sang National Park about 90 km from Phayao, and its directions to Doi Phu Nang go through Dok Khamtai and then Highway 1251 for about 45 km.

Seasons and festivals

We found no official source naming a single best month for the whole province, so here is only what we could check. TAT recommends Doi Phu Nang National Park from October to January for the weather, and January to March if you want to see Thai green peafowl in their breeding season. Wikipedia's Phayao Lake article gives an average local temperature range of 19.5 to 27.5 degrees Celsius and about 1,064 mm of rain a year, and describes the rainy season around July to November. Check the Thai Meteorological Department forecast before you go.

Events the sources mention:

  • Candlelit boat procession on the lake at Makha Bucha, Visakha Bucha and Asalha Bucha: TAT says a procession circles the chedi of Wat Tilok Aram at dusk.
  • Pho Khun Ngam Mueang Fair, 5 March each year at his monument (Wikipedia).
  • Thai Lue Cultural Festival, early March at Wat Phra That Sop Waen in Chiang Kham, with Tai Lue costume, cotton-spinning demonstrations and performances (Wikipedia).
  • Songkran (Pi Mai Mueang), 13 to 16 April (Wikipedia).
  • Winter and Red Cross Fair, late December to early January near the Phayao bus terminal (Wikipedia).

Dates follow the year and the lunar calendar, so confirm with the organisers.

Things to do in Phayao town

Kwan Phayao

TAT describes a natural lake with a mountain range behind it, fed by 18 streams. Wikipedia says the Department of Fisheries finished a floodgate in 1941, which flooded farmland, houses and old temples and turned the wetland into a reservoir about 1.5 m deep. Today there are restaurants and parks along the shore. Wikipedia's province article says motorboats are not allowed on the lake, to protect it from pollution. Wikivoyage suggests a lakeside stroll or a picnic on the grassy bank, as locals do.

Wat Si Khom Kham (Wat Phra Chao Ton Luang)

The temple sits on the lakeshore. Wikipedia says it was founded around the 12th century, the present buildings were finished in 1923, and the main Buddha was cast between 1491 and 1524. TAT, which calls it Wat Phrachao Ton Luang or Wat Thung Iang, says the image is the largest and oldest Buddha in the Lan Na kingdom. Around the main hall are 38 Buddha heads, some cast in local pink sandstone. A second hall stands on stilts over the water and holds murals by the Thai artist Angkarn Kalayanapong, in Lan Na style with contemporary touches. TAT says a homage ceremony is held every year in the sixth lunar month, around May.

Wat Tilok Aram in the lake

Thai Wikipedia records a royal temple from the reign of King Tilokarat, built between BE 2019 and 2029. The temple now lies under the lake except for the top of its chedi, because of the 1939 floodgate. TAT says the province installed the Luang Pho Sila Buddha at the spot so people can pay respects by boat. Wikivoyage says small boats leave from the jetty in town at 40 baht per person, roughly 08:00 to 17:30 (updated August 2025). That price is from Wikivoyage rather than an official source, so ask at the jetty.

Wat Analayo Thipphayaram

Across the lake on a hillside, this is the temple TAT tells a legend about: a founding monk dreamed of golden sand flowing to the site, and villagers once saw a round light floating over the high mountains on important Buddhist days. Wikipedia describes a wide, shaded compound with buildings and sculptures of religious figures by skilled contemporary craftsmen.

Wat Phra That Chom Thong and other town temples

Wikivoyage places Wat Phra That Chom Thong on Doi Chom Thong hill, with a stupa said to hold a relic of the Buddha. Wikipedia says the temple is set in an arboretum and has a panoramic view of the town and lake. A Wikimedia Commons photo shows its skywalk viewing platform. Wikivoyage notes that part of the temple entrance holds sacred objects in Lan Na tradition and says women are not allowed in that part; ask staff on arrival. Wikipedia also lists Wat Si Umong Kham, with a Chiang Saen-style chedi and the Phra Chao Lan Tue Buddha.

Museums, the fishery station and the walking street

Wikivoyage says the Phayao Cultural Exhibition Hall is about a 10-minute walk north along the lake, has two floors, and shows fishing methods, lake information, Buddha images and inscriptions from the 13th century on, mostly with English translations. Wikipedia also recommends the Wiang Phayao Museum at Wat Lee, with more than 5,000 historical objects, and the Kwan Phayao Pavilion and Phayao Freshwater Fisheries Research Centre, described as the first in the world to breed the Mekong giant catfish successfully.

The walking street suits souvenirs. TAT says it sells crispy pork skin and chilli pastes, in front of Kwan Phayao on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and at the City Pillar Shrine on regular days. A homestay in town says the walking street runs only Friday to Saturday, 18:00 to 22:00, with a Sunday market 18:00 to 22:00. The two do not match, so check on the day.

Mountains and waterfalls outside town

Phu Sang National Park and Phu Sang waterfall

TAT says the park covers over 280 sq km, shares a 30 km border with Laos, and is home to the rare Pu Lu, or Siamese big-headed turtle. Namtok Phu Sang is about 25 m high with a warm current of roughly 35 degrees Celsius, clear and without a sulphur smell, so it can be swum in the cool season. The waterfall is about 200 m from the park headquarters. TAT puts the park about 90 km from Phayao and says it offers accommodation and camping.

Doi Phu Nang National Park

Wikipedia says the park spans Dok Khamtai, Pong and Chiang Muan districts, with Doi Phu Nang peaking at 1,202 m (Thai Wikipedia gives 1,222 m) and two main waterfalls, Than Sawan and Huai Ton Phueng. TAT mentions waterfalls, white-water rapids, a reservoir and a canyon, and says visitors can sleep in park accommodation or tents. Wikivoyage says two of the waterfalls can be swum in; ask rangers about water levels and trails first.

Doi Luang National Park and Bo Sib Song

TAT describes Doi Luang as a mountain range running north to south with its highest peak at 1,694 m, a nine-tier limestone waterfall called Namtok Pu Kaeng that flows all year, and other falls including Wang Kaeo, Champa Thong and Mae Yaen. There are trekking routes with views over Kwan Phayao. Closer to town, Wikivoyage recommends Bo Sib Song, a walking trail with twelve water holes, a cliff viewpoint, a campsite and toilets.

Phu Langka Forest Park

TAT says the forest park was established on 8 May 2002, covers about 7,800 rai, and rises from about 900 to 1,720 m in Chiang Kham and Pong districts. Wikivoyage calls it the only viewpoint for a sea of fog in the province, at Pha Chang Noi, open daily 06:00 to 18:00 (it writes the area as 7,800 hectares, where TAT says rai; we follow TAT). Ask locally about road conditions before you drive up.

Chiang Kham and Tai Lue culture

Chiang Kham, in the north-east near the Laos border, is home to many Thai Lue people according to Wikipedia, and hand-woven cotton is a Thai Lue craft.

  • Wat Nantaram. TAT says the main hall is built entirely of teak in the Tai Yai style with carved fretwork on its gables, windows and terrace, a gilded teak principal Buddha, and a museum of old banknotes, utensils and textiles. Thai Wikipedia says it was built in BE 2467 (1924).
  • Wat Phra That Sop Waen. Thai Wikipedia says it stands where the Waen and Hong rivers meet, and that its chedi is thought to be about 800 years old, in Lan Na style with a square base and gold bell.
  • Wat Phra Nang Din. TAT says its main Buddha has no pedestal because locals could not lift it onto one, hence "Buddha seated on the ground".

A sample 3-day plan

This plan is our suggestion, built from the sourced facts above rather than an official timetable. Adjust it to your transport and to each site's opening days.

  • Day 1: the lakeside town. Start at Wat Si Khom Kham and walk the lakeshore, then visit the Phayao Cultural Exhibition Hall, which Wikivoyage puts about 10 minutes' walk north along the lake. Take the afternoon boat to Wat Tilok Aram. In the evening, walk the street market and eat by the water. Check which days the walking street runs, because our two sources differ.
  • Day 2: hills and falls near town. Go up to Wat Phra That Chom Thong for the view over the lake and the town, then on to Wat Analayo Thipphayaram across the lake. If you have a car and energy, try Bo Sib Song or the Doi Luang trekking routes that Wikivoyage and TAT describe.
  • Day 3: Chiang Kham and Phu Sang. Leave early for Wat Nantaram and Wat Phra That Sop Waen in Chiang Kham, then continue to Phu Sang National Park, which TAT puts about 90 km from Phayao town. For a soak at the warm waterfall, ask the park about hours and fees first, and sleep in Chiang Kham or in the park so you are not driving back after dark.

With more time, add Doi Phu Nang for Than Sawan waterfall or Phu Langka for the sea of fog. They are the furthest out and the mountain roads differ, so ask locally about conditions first.

Where to stay

We do not have a separate Phayao stay page yet. Seven hotels passed our check, which needs the hotel's own official website and quotes that a second script re-matched on 16 October 2026; our rule is eight. Many small Phayao hotels have only a Facebook page, so we left them out. We show no prices, ratings or reviews.

Town and lakeside: best without a car, since the lake, Wat Si Khom Kham and the walking street are walkable.

  • Phayao Gateway Hotel: its Thai site gives 108 rooms in the centre of town and lists a restaurant, fitness room, pool, snooker and Thai massage (hotel site).
  • HOP INN Phayao: its page puts it on Tha Kwan Road, near King Ngam Muang Monument, Kwan Phayao and Wat Si Khom Kham (hotel site).
  • B2 Phayao Boutique & Budget Hotel: close to the city hall, with Superior, Superior Premier and Deluxe Triple rooms and a 24-hour front desk (hotel site).
  • KM Kwanphayao Hotel: near the lake, some rooms with lake views, four room types and breakfast 07:00 to 10:00, booked by LINE or phone (hotel site).
  • Naga Tara Resort: at Ban Tom, with a pool, spa, fitness room and villas with private pools and a personal butler (hotel site).
  • Ban Nai Soi homestay: its Thai site says it is 10 m from the lake and close to the walking street and Wat Klang Nam jetty (homestay site).

Chiang Kham: for Tai Lue temples and Phu Sang. Rico Resort Chiang Kham says it sits in the rice fields of eastern Phayao on a 19-acre property, a 1 hour 15 minute drive from Chiang Rai airport, and can arrange an airport driver for up to four guests (resort site).

In the parks: TAT says Phu Sang and Doi Phu Nang national parks have accommodation and camping; contact the park to book.

Failed our check: Green Hill Phayao (its site returned a Cloudflare bot-check page), Phayao Northern Lake Hotel (its own booking site loads its text with JavaScript, which our check cannot read), and several hotels that only have Facebook pages. One more hotel with a readable official site would be enough to build a full stay page.

Frequently asked questions

Does Phayao have an airport?

Wikivoyage says the nearest airport is Mae Fah Luang-Chiang Rai International, about 100 km from town, and the nearest railway stations are Lampang and Chiang Mai. Fly or take the train, then continue by road.

How do I get to Phayao from Bangkok?

Take a bus from Mo Chit, or drive Highway 1 through Phitsanulok and Phrae, about 700 km. The 12Go page showed 19 buses when we opened it; compare times and fares with the operator before you buy.

Can I get to Phayao from Chiang Mai?

Yes. Wikivoyage lists four buses a day from Chiang Mai Bus Terminal 3 taking about 3 hours, or you can drive about 150 km through Lampang.

How many days do I need in Phayao?

We suggest two days for the town. Day one: Kwan Phayao, Wat Si Khom Kham, Wat Tilok Aram and the walking street in the evening. Day two: Wat Phra That Chom Thong and Wat Analayo. Add one or two days with a car for Phu Sang and Chiang Kham; Phu Sang is about 90 km from town, so count it as a full day.

How much is the Phu Sang National Park entrance?

TAT lists foreign adults at 300 baht and children at 150 baht, but Wikivoyage lists 50 baht for both (March 2024). Fees may differ for Thai nationals. Call the park on 0 5440 1099 before you go.

When is the best time to visit Phayao?

TAT recommends Doi Phu Nang from October to January and January to March for peafowl. The candlelit lake procession falls on the three major Buddhist days, and Wikipedia describes the rainy season as roughly July to November.

How much is the boat to Wat Tilok Aram?

Wikivoyage says 40 baht per person (updated August 2025), but that is a wiki figure rather than the jetty's, so ask before you board.

Is there nightlife in Phayao?

We found no source describing real nightlife. In the evening there is the walking street and lakeside restaurants. For a livelier town, try Chiang Rai or Chiang Mai.
