Nan Travel Guide: Wat Phumin, Doi Phu Kha and Bo Kluea

A quiet northern province of temples, rice fields and mountain roads

Nan is a province in northern Thailand with a walkable old town, a famous temple and, further north, rice-field valleys, a national park and the ancient salt wells of Bo Kluea. It is a long way from Bangkok, but there is an airport in the town, and the road north from town is a mountain drive that rewards slow travel. Read this guide for the practical side: how to arrive, how far the sights really are, when to go and where to sleep.

This guide uses only facts we could check on 16 October 2026 on the sources listed below, and it says where they disagree. For hotel choices, read where to stay in Nan, or the Thai version, ที่พักน่าน. Demand for Nan in English is small, so we kept this page practical rather than long.

What Nan is like

Wikipedia says seven national parks are in Nan province, and that Doi Phu Kha National Park is Northern Thailand's largest. It also says Bo Kluea district borders Laos to the east and is known for ancient salt wells, active since the time of the Nan Kingdom. Nan is not a beach or nightlife destination. Visama Explorer, a tented camp in the north, describes the province as one that has resisted the pace of modern tourism, and a park guide says there is no public transport into Doi Phu Kha National Park, so plan for a car or a driver in the mountains.

The province splits into two trips. The town has the temples, the museum and the evening street, all within walking distance if you stay in the old town. The mountains are a separate day or two: Doi Samer Dao to the south in Si Nan National Park, and Pua, Doi Phu Kha and Bo Kluea to the north. Plan at least three nights if you want both, and book the mountain nights where you will actually wake up.

Getting to Nan

Nan has its own airport, Nan Nakhon Airport (NNT), in Mueang Nan district. The hotels list airport distances of 3.3 km for Nan Boutique Hotel and 3.4 km for Nan Boutique Resort, and Nan de Panna says 10 minutes. Everything else is a long drive, so choose your route with the ground time in mind.

Inside the province the main roads are mountain roads. Boklua View gives two routes from Nan city to Bo Kluea: Highway 101 to Pua and then road 1256 across Doi Phu Kha, or Santisuk and then Highway 1081. It calls the loop up through Pua and back through Santisuk a popular minivan day trip. A park guide says there are no public transport options into Doi Phu Kha National Park, so you need your own vehicle, a taxi or a driver.

Booking the trip

The 12Go page for Bangkok to Nan listed the companies and departures above when we opened it in a browser on 16 October 2026. The page mixes bus, van and flight operators, so compare the departure point and the travel time, not only the number of departures. We link it as a convenient place to compare, and some links on this site may earn us a commission; this does not change the times you see. We do not repeat any price because prices change by date.

The seasons

Wikipedia gives Nan a tropical savanna climate: winters quite dry and very warm, temperatures rising until April, when the average daily maximum is 37.0 degrees Celsius, and a monsoon from late April through October with heavy rain. The Thai Meteorological Department publishes the live forecast at tmd.go.th; check it for your dates, and see our guide to Thailand's best time by region.

For the sea of mist, a private guide says that in the cool season you should arrive at Doi Samer Dao before 7 AM, when the valleys below fill with cloud that burns off within an hour or two. A news report from the morning of 17 November 2017 describes tourists enjoying a long sea of mist at the same viewpoint. The guide also says camping is allowed from roughly October to February. We could not verify an official season from the park authority, so treat these as a guide, not a guarantee.

For rice fields, hosts in Pua and Bo Kluea mention rice paddies and terraces, but none of our sources gave a harvest calendar, so ask your host which month the fields are green or golden. We did not find a sourced fall-foliage season, so we do not promise one.

What to see by area

Nan old town

Wikipedia says the cruciform ubosot of Wat Phumin was constructed in 1596 and restored in the reign of Chao Anantaworritthidet (1852 to 1892). It describes the temple as the only one built as if on the back of two immense nagas, with well-preserved murals painted by Thai Lue artists at the end of the 19th century, including scenes with Europeans. Mintara's site places the Nan National Museum, the walking street and Wat Phumin within one street of its old-city location. Wikipedia says the murals resemble those at Wat Nong Bua in Tha Wang Pha district, just north of Nan town.

Si Nan National Park and Doi Samer Dao

Wikipedia lists Pha Chu, Pha Hua Sing and Doi Samer Dao as scenic viewpoints in Si Nan National Park, notes the Nan River flows about 60 kilometres through the park and names Kaeng Luang as a popular rafting spot. Emmaline lists the park, which it says houses Sao Din Na Noi and Doi Samer Dao, at 72 km (90 minutes) from the hotel. A private guide says the park is about an hour south of Nan town.

Pua and Doi Phu Kha

Wikipedia says Doi Phu Kha National Park covers parts of eight districts in the Luang Prabang Range, that the park office and the summit are within Pua district, and that the Nan and Pua rivers rise inside the park. A park guide says the headquarters is 24 km from Pua along Highway 1256 and that resorts in Pua and Bo Kluea are 30 to 40 minutes' drive from it. We have not verified fees or opening hours from an official page, so check before you go. Non Na Pua says it sits between rice fields and within 700 metres of the famous Wat Phuket.

Bo Kluea and Sapan

Salt is still produced the traditional way in Bo Kluea, according to Wikipedia, which says the district is known for its ancient salt wells. A personal travel blog says Ban Sapan is about 9 km north of Bo Kluea town, a small village along the Wa River in the mountains of Doi Phu Kha, popular with Thai visitors since 2017 and now full of homestays and camps. Boklua View's About page describes the valley as a place where locals plant rice, fish the river and extract salt from underground saline water.

Where to stay

The stay guide compares four areas, with every hotel fact checked on the hotel's own website:

  • Nan old town: walkable to Wat Phumin and the walking street, with four hotels.
  • Phu Phiang: gardens, a pool and rice-field views a short drive outside town.
  • Pua: a rural base for the Doi Phu Kha road, with a single-bungalow homestay and a small resort.
  • Bo Kluea: bamboo bungalows, a stream-side retreat and a tented camp near the salt wells.
