Chumphon is the province most travellers pass through on the way to Koh Tao, and many only see a station, a bus terminal or a pier. It is worth a longer look. The province sits on the Isthmus of Kra, the narrow land bridge between the Malay Peninsula and the rest of Thailand, and it has a long Gulf coastline, a marine national park and beaches that are quiet by Thai standards. This guide covers the mainland. Where a boat hands you over to an island, we link to the island guide instead of repeating it.
Everything here was checked on 16 October 2026 against the sources listed below. We say where they disagree and where we could not verify something. Hotels are in our where to stay in Chumphon guide, or in Thai, ที่พักชุมพร.

What Chumphon is
Wikipedia describes Chumphon as a southern province on the Gulf of Thailand, neighbouring Prachuap Khiri Khan, Surat Thani and Ranong, with the Burmese province of Tanintharyi to the west. It gives the coastline as 222 km and counts 44 islands in the Chumphon Archipelago, and says the province has waterfalls, beaches, forests, mangroves and rivers. Wikivoyage calls it a gateway to the Gulf islands of Ko Samui, Ko Phangan, Ko Tao and Ko Khai.
For a visitor that breaks into five places: the town, with the railway station, markets and the national museum; the beaches north of town at Thung Wua Laen, Hat Sai Ri and Thung Makham; the Pathio coast near the airport; the marine park offshore; and Lang Suan to the south. They are each a separate drive.
Getting to Chumphon
| From | How | What the sources say |
|---|---|---|
| Bangkok by air | Flights to Chumphon Airport in Pathio | Wikipedia says Nok Air and Thai AirAsia fly between Don Mueang and Chumphon; Wikivoyage names AirAsia and Nok Air. Check the airline for the current timetable |
| Bangkok by train | Southern Line to Chumphon station | Wikipedia says the station is in Tha Taphao subdistrict and is the main station for the province; Wikivoyage says Pathio station is nearer the airport |
| Bangkok by bus | Southern Bus Terminal | Wikivoyage says air-conditioned buses run from the Southern Bus Terminal; it lists several terminals in and out of town |
| Bangkok by car | Highway 4 (Phetkasem Road) | Wikipedia gives 463 km and about 7 hours |
| Bangkok, booking online | The 12Go route page | See below |
The 12Go page for Bangkok to Chumphon had the title "Bangkok to Chumphon by train, bus, ferry, van, flight, taxi" when we opened it in a real browser on 16 October 2026. Its editorial text calls Chumphon the transit point for Koh Tao and the gateway to Ranong and Phuket, and names Hat Sai Ree and Thung Wua Laen beaches and the Chumphon National Museum. We saw no statistics block, so we quote no fares or timetables from it. Some links on this site may earn us a commission; that does not change the times or fares you see.
Where the sources disagree
| Item | What we found |
|---|---|
| Airport to town | 35 km north of downtown on Wikipedia's airport article, 30 km on Wikivoyage and on Wikipedia's province article |
| Flight time from Bangkok | Around 60 minutes (Wikipedia) against around 50 minutes (Wikivoyage) |
| Airport to the Koh Tao pier | Wikivoyage says budget 1 hour for the 60 km; a hotel's own page says its drive is 40 minutes from the airport to a town hotel |
Treat the longer figure as the safer one, and ask your hotel or operator for the real time on the day.

Chumphon town
Wikipedia says Chumphon railway station is in Tha Taphao subdistrict, owned by the State Railway of Thailand, 468.534 km from Thon Buri station, and that all trains going further south must stop there. Wikivoyage describes Saladaeng Road as the main hotel strip and gives walking directions from the station to the in-town bus terminal. Our stay guide lists A-Te Chumphon Hotel, Loft Mania and HOP INN in the town.
Wikivoyage lists the National Museum of Chumphon as its first sight and says any trip to Chumphon should start there. It gives the museum as about 3.5 km from downtown and open Wednesday to Sunday, 09:00 to 16:00, closed Monday, Tuesday and public holidays, updated March 2024. We did not confirm this on an official page, so check before you go.

Thung Wua Laen and Hat Saphli
Wikipedia says Hat Thung Wua Laen is 16 km north-east of downtown Chumphon, 20 km from the railway station and 17 km from the airport. Wikivoyage, which calls it the province's key beach destination, lists diving, snorkelling, kayaking, kite surfing, beach sports and temple visits, and says it has numerous resorts and beach bars but stays relatively unspoiled. Wikipedia adds that Hat Saphli, about 2 km away, was ranked the cleanest beach in the country by the Pollution Control Department in 2017. That ranking is Wikipedia's wording; we did not find the original.
Two hotels in our stay guide are here: Chumphon Cabana Resort, which describes about 2 km of white sand, and Armonia Village Resort and Spa.

Hat Sai Ri and Mu Ko Chumphon National Park
Wikipedia says Mu Ko Chumphon National Park was established in 1999, that its old name was Had Sai Ree, and that it has nearly 40 islands with long white beaches and clear water, plus coral reefs for swimming, snorkelling and scuba diving. It lists Hat Thung Makham and Hat Sai Ri in Mueang district and Hat Tong Khrok in Lang Suan district.
Wikivoyage describes Hat Sai Ri as about 20 km from town along Highways 4119 and 4098 with a long smooth white-sand beach shaded by pines, boats berthed along it and restaurants selling seafood. It also lists a shrine to the Prince of Chumphon nearby, with a well-preserved warship, and a national park visitor centre with mangrove boardwalks. We could not verify park fees or opening hours, so check on the day.

Boats to Koh Tao
Wikivoyage says taking the ferry from Chumphon is the fastest way to get to Ko Tao and puts the pier south of town at Thung Nakham Noi (Thung Makham Noi), about 60 km and an hour from the airport. It says Lomprayah has a counter at the airport, and it says Songserm no longer operates ferries from Chumphon. A Chumphon airport information site says a new Lomprayah pier near the airport was due to open in early 2025; we could not confirm whether it is running, so ask the operator which pier your boat uses. For the island itself, use our Koh Tao guide and Koh Tao stay guide.
One resort, Moonshine Tented Resort, says in Thai that the Thung Makham Noi pier of Lomprayah is 1.5 km from it. Treat that as the resort's own figure.
The Pathio coast and the airport
Pathio district holds Chumphon Airport, which Wikipedia says reopened in 2008 after nine years of closure. Wikivoyage lists three beaches nearby: Ao Bo Mao, with small resorts and boats to Ko Khai; Ao Thung Makham, with limestone formations separating the bays; and Coral Beach at Chum Kho, which it says is part of a giant clam sanctuary. It also notes dedicated bicycle lanes on the coastal road. Four hotels in our stay guide are on this stretch: Sara, Laydee, The Village and The Beach Resort and Residence.

Lang Suan and the south
Lang Suan is the district south of Chumphon town. Wikivoyage says the Lang Suan River is where a long-boat racing festival is held each year around the 11th lunar month, roughly October, with 32 rowers per boat. Wikipedia lists Hat Tong Khrok in Lang Suan district as part of Mu Ko Chumphon National Park, and Commons has photos of Bang Nam Chuet beach. We found no hotel in Lang Suan with a website we could read and verify, so none is in our stay guide.

The seasons
We found no official climate table for Chumphon. Moonshine Tented Resort's own About page, in Thai, says the marine park area is open all year except from May to mid-October, when south-west monsoon winds bring heavy rain and strong storm waves. That is one resort's statement, not an official closure notice, so check the national park and your boat operator for your dates.
