Chanthaburi Guide: Old Town, Gems, Waterfalls and Beaches

Eastern Thailand's gem and fruit province, with an old riverside town, waterfalls and quiet beaches

Chanthaburi is the province in eastern Thailand that Wikivoyage describes as known for tropical fruit, particularly durian, and for gems. Behind the old riverside town are hills with waterfalls and forest, and in front of it the coast runs out to quiet beaches. It is an easy add-on to a trip from Bangkok or Pattaya, and a natural stop on the road to Trat and Koh Chang. This guide covers the town, the sights and the beaches, and says plainly where we could not verify something.

Everything here was checked on 16 October 2026 against the sources listed below. Where sources disagree we show both figures. Hotels are in our where to stay in Chanthaburi guide, or in Thai, ที่พักจันทบุรี.

What Chanthaburi is, and how to use this guide

Wikipedia places Chanthaburi in eastern Thailand on the border with Battambang and Pailin in Cambodia, on the shore of the Gulf of Thailand, and says the province was once an important source of gemstones, especially rubies and sapphires. The same article says that in 2000 it produced nearly 380,000 tonnes of durian. Wikivoyage says the provincial town sits 245 km from Bangkok and is a useful transport hub for reaching Koh Chang and Koh Kood.

For a first trip, three days works: one in town for the riverside, the cathedral and the gem and fruit markets, one in the hills (a waterfall or a mountain viewpoint), and one on the coast. The distances matter more than the sights. The beaches and the waterfalls are each a separate drive from town, so most visitors hire a car or a driver.

The 12Go page for Bangkok to Chanthaburi was titled bus, van, flight and taxi when we opened it in a real browser on 16 October 2026. It listed operators including AEC 168, Bangkok Airways, Cherdchai Tour East, Easyride, Gosafe, Kanokwan, Kim Transfers, Kohchang Bangkok Transport, MCC Van, Mitdee, Tara Tour and Travel and Torch, and showed 149 departures a day, the earliest at 5:00 AM and the latest at 4:20 PM. We do not quote its fares. Some links on this site may earn us a commission; that does not change the times you see.

Where the sources disagree

ItemWhat we found
Distance from Bangkok245 km (Wikivoyage) against 300 km on the 12Go page we opened; Wikivoyage's own route figures run from 248 to 330 km depending on the road
Bangkok by vanAbout 2.5 to 3.5 hours (Wikivoyage, dated) against a wide range of departures on the 12Go page

Treat the shorter figure as the best case and confirm times on the day. Chanthaburi has no airport of its own in the sources we read, so most travellers arrive by road. For a train-and-bus comparison across Thailand, see our Bangkok intercity transport guide.

Things to do in Chanthaburi

We could not verify opening hours or entrance fees for any sight below; the Tourism Authority of Thailand site blocks plain fetches, so check each place on the day.

Chanthaburi old riverside town

Wikivoyage describes three bridges over the river in central Chanthaburi and a small collection of bars and restaurants on both banks between the two road bridges. USABAI Riverside Boutique Hotel's own site calls the Chanthaboon Waterfront Community a historic riverside district more than a century old, and HOP INN's page lists it as nearby along with King Taksin the Great Public Park. Wikivoyage says the old city and downtown area is walkable.

Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception

Wikivoyage says this Catholic cathedral is the largest in Thailand, built in 1909 in neo-Gothic style, and that the original spires were taken down during the Second World War and later replaced. Wikipedia says it is the fourth church built on the spot and a witness of the French presence in the city. It stands on the river bank, close to the footbridge.

The gem market

Chanthaburi was once an important source of rubies and sapphires according to Wikipedia. The gem trade is still part of the town: Maneechan Resort says its free EV tuk-tuk runs to the Night Gem Market and to Central Chanthaburi. We found no official source for market days or hours, so ask your hotel which streets trade on which days before you plan around it. Buy with care and only from sellers you trust.

Khao Khitchakut National Park

Wikipedia says the park is 28 km north-east of town, covers about 59 square kilometres and is one of Thailand's smallest national parks, in the Soi Dao Mountains. The highest point is Khao Phra Bat at 1,085 m, where there is a Buddha footprint that Wikipedia calls an important religious place for Thai Buddhists. Wikipedia names Krathing Falls among its waterfalls.

Namtok Phliu National Park

Wikipedia says the park is 14 km south of Chanthaburi town and covers about 135 square kilometres of forested karst mountains with waterfalls and stupas from the reign of King Rama V. Maneechan Resort says the park is a 10-minute drive from the resort.

Laem Sing

Wikivoyage describes Khao Laem Sing as a small hill 172 m high east of the mouth of the Chanthaburi River, with a cape that looks like a sprawling lion and an old fort, Pom Phairi Phinat. Nisasiri Boutique Resort's page lists nearby sights in Laem Sing including Tuek Daeng, Khuk Khi Kai, Oasis Sea World and Namtok Phliu. Laemsing Natural Beach Resort says the beach is 30 km from town.

Kung Kraben bay and the beaches

Wikivoyage lists Khung Wiman, Khung Kraben, Laem Sadet and Chao Lao beaches in Tha Mai district, about 30 km from town, and says there are accommodations particularly at Chao Lao, with shallow coral reefs about 1 km offshore and glass-bottomed boats. It says Ao Khung Kraben has nature trails for studying mangrove forests.

Fruit and durian season

HOP INN Chanthaburi's own page says the ideal time to stay for fruit orchards is from around May to July. Wikipedia says the province produced nearly 380,000 tonnes of durian in 2000, which it gives as about 45.57 percent of Thailand's durian production. Seasons vary by year and orchard, so treat the May to July window as a hotel's guide, not a guarantee, and ask your hotel which orchards are open.

Chanthaburi to Cambodia

The UK FCDO says land borders and crossings between Thailand and Cambodia remain suspended, and advises against all but essential travel within 20 km of the land border with Cambodia. We checked the page on 16 October 2026. Wikivoyage still describes the Ban Pakard crossing near Pailin, but that text is not current; do not plan a crossing from Chanthaburi until an official source reports it open.

The seasons

Wikipedia says Chanthaburi has little temperature variation, light and infrequent rain in the short dry season from December to February, and torrential rain in the wet season from April to October, with March and November in between. Wikivoyage says the best time for the Khao Wong caves is February to April because they tend to flood in the rainy months. The fruit season that HOP INN gives falls in the wet months, so pack for rain.
