Suphan Buri lies north-west of Bangkok, and many visitors drive straight past it on the way to Kanchanaburi or Uthai Thani. That is a pity, because one province holds three kinds of trip: a town of big temples and a viewing tower, an old riverside market that kept its wooden shophouses, and a lake and hill country in the north and west. The name means city of gold, and the town is old; Wikipedia says its first confirmed settlement dates from the Dvaravati period.
This guide uses only what we checked against the sources listed at the end of the page on 16 October 2026, and it says plainly where information is old, where sources disagree and where we could not verify something. If you are choosing a hotel, read where to stay in Suphan Buri or the Thai version, ที่พักสุพรรณบุรี.

What kind of province is Suphan Buri
Wikipedia lists the neighbours as Uthai Thani, Chai Nat, Sing Buri, Ang Thong, Ayutthaya, Nakhon Pathom and Kanchanaburi. The terrain is mostly low river plain, with small mountain ranges in the north and west, and the south-east is the very low plain of the Tha Chin River, which is rice country. Wikipedia gives two figures for the area, 5,358 square kilometres in the text and 5,410 in the infobox, so we say only about 5,400 square kilometres. The 2024 population, which Wikipedia cites to the Department of Provincial Administration, is 822,211.
The province has its own flavours. Wikipedia says it is Thailand's largest producer of water chestnuts, that the vegetable became a geographical indication product of Suphan Buri in 2017, and that the dessert thapthim krop, built on water chestnuts, was named one of the world's 50 best desserts by CNN Travel in 2019. The provincial aquatic animal is the Boeseman croaker, and Wikipedia says Suphan Buri people speak a distinct Central Thai dialect that is believed to be the form spoken in the Ayutthaya period.
Wikivoyage adds a blunt note about local politics: many public institutions in the province are named after the late prime minister Banharn Silpa-archa and his wife Jamsai. That is why you will see the name Banharn-Jamsai on a tower and a park. We mention it only so the repeated name does not confuse you.

Sam Chuk 100-year market
Sam Chuk market stands on the Tha Chin River in the north of the province. Wikivoyage describes it as a Chinese community market that keeps wooden shophouses in the style of a century ago. Wikipedia says the community and old market district won an Award of Merit in the 2009 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for conservation, after a local committee restored 19 buildings and adapted the old gingerbread-style architecture into a working market.
What is worth doing here is walking slowly, not shopping hard. Wikivoyage mentions traditional desserts, local food and cheap souvenirs. We could not verify the opening hours from an official source, so check before you go, especially on weekdays, and expect more people on public holidays.
Don Chedi and the elephant duel
The Don Chedi Monument is in Don Chedi district and commemorates King Naresuan's elephant duel with the Burmese crown prince. Wikipedia says a new chedi covers the ruins of the old one, with a statue of Naresuan on his war elephant designed by Silpa Bhirasri. The ruins were discovered in 1913, and the memorial opened in 1959 under the government of Sarit Thanarat.
You should know that the identification is disputed. Wikipedia says the claim for this site has been challenged, most notably by supporters of a site in Phanom Thuan district of Kanchanaburi, that the debate reached national attention around 1972 to 1973, and that some dissenters question the evidence further. We do not decide this for you. Visit it as a state-built memorial, read the signs, and read more than one account. Wikivoyage also lists the Nong Sarai historical site, a lake tied to the same battle, which it says now covers only 29 rai and is in poor condition.
Wat Pa Lelai and the town
Wat Pa Lelai Worawihan stands on the west side of the Suphan Buri River on Malai Man Road, in Rua Yai subdistrict according to Wikipedia. Wikivoyage calls it the most important temple in Suphan Buri, a royal temple with the emblem of King Rama IV on the gable of its wihan and a huge Buddha image known as Luang Pho To inside. Behind the temple stands a traditional Thai house called Khum Khun Chang.

Several smaller temples are worth a stop, all from Wikivoyage. Wat Phra Rup has a reclining Buddha said to have one of the most beautiful faces in Thailand and is the original home of the famous Khun Phaen amulet. Wat Khae has a tamarind tree about a thousand years old and Khum Khun Phaen, a traditional house built as part of a literature conservation park. Wat Pratu San and Wat No Phutthangkun (Wat Makham No) have murals painted in 1848. Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat once stood in the heart of the ancient town, but its main stupa was raided for treasure and left in ruins.

For a view from above, go to Banharn-Jamsai Tower in Chaloem Phatthara Rachini Park. Wikipedia calls it the tallest tower in Thailand, and Wikivoyage gives its height as 123 metres with four viewpoint decks. Wikipedia lists the floors: the first is the entrance and a souvenir shop, the second a food centre and viewpoint, the third a viewpoint and another shop, and the fourth a viewpoint with telescopes and a history exhibition. We could not verify the entrance fee or opening hours from an official source, so check them.

Two places that town hotels mention are Dragon Paradise Park and the Dragon Descendants Museum. K2Green Hotel says Dragon Paradise Park is the symbol attraction of Suphan Buri and a few minutes from the hotel, and B2 Suphan Buri Premier lists the museum 3.8 km from the hotel. We have no official fee or hours for either, so we give none.

Wat Phai Rong Wua and temples outside the town
Wikivoyage describes Wat Phai Rong Wua as a compound with mock-ups of important Buddhist sites, a cement Buddha image it calls the world's largest, and a "Hell Garden" with thousands of statues showing the punishments of the afterlife for broken Buddhist rules. Some visitors like the spectacle and some find it unsettling. Think twice before taking young children, because many of the statue groups are violent.

Wat Thap Kradan has a museum for the folk singer Phumphuang Duangchan, who spent her childhood nearby, says Wikivoyage. Wat Ban Krang is known for Khun Paen amulets, and Wat Doem Bang has a carved wooden pulpit in a mixed Thai and Chinese style. If your time is short, choose Wat Pa Lelai, Sam Chuk and Don Chedi first and add temples as the road allows.
Bueng Chawak and the northern lake
Bueng Chawak lies in Doem Bang Nang Buat district and runs on into Hankha district of Chai Nat. Wikipedia gives its area as 2,700 rai and puts it about 64 km north of Suphan Buri city. It was declared a non-hunting area in 1983, developed as a tourist site in 1996 and registered as a Ramsar wetland in 1998.
The site has an aquarium, which Wikipedia says holds the longest and largest shark tunnel in Southeast Asia, a zoo with tigers, lions, white tigers, leopards and camels, an aviary of 5 rai that is 25 metres high, and a folk vegetable park with more than 500 kinds of vegetables. Wikipedia says migrating lesser whistling ducks and other waterfowl arrive in the cool season from November to March and leave in April, which is the best reason to time a visit for those months.

The lake is far from the town and from town hotels. Drive yourself or arrange a car, and check the hours and entry fee before you go, because we have no official source for either. Wikivoyage lists hours of 08:00 to 16:30 on weekdays and 08:00 to 18:00 at weekends, but that is community information that may be out of date.
U Thong: the ancient city and the museum
U Thong is a district in the west that holds an ancient city. Wikipedia says the ancient city stands on the west bank of the Chorakhe Sam Phan, about 30 km from Suphan Buri town, inside a moat of 1,690 by 840 metres, and that it was occupied for many centuries before the Dvaravati period. Local tradition, recorded by Prince Damrong, held that Ramathibodi, the first king of Ayutthaya, ruled here until an epidemic emptied the town. Wikipedia adds that Tang ceramic sherds and other foreign goods of the eighth to tenth centuries have been found in the town.
Wikivoyage lists U Thong National Museum, which it says shows archaeological evidence and art objects from different periods found in Suphan Buri, with a mock-up Lao Song house outside. Treat U Thong as a separate day. Do not try to fit it with the town and Bueng Chawak in a single day.
Dan Chang, Phu Toei and Krasiao Dam
The west of the province is hill country that few visitors reach. Wikipedia says Phu Toei National Park covers 317 square kilometres in Dan Chang district and has been the 86th national park since 30 September 1998. Its high point is Khao Thevada, 1,123 metres, the highest mountain in the province, and Wikipedia quotes the Daily Xpress as calling it one of Thailand's least known and least visited national parks.

Wikivoyage lists more in this area: a natural mountain pine forest and giant cycads in the park, Taphoen Khi waterfall, and Krasiao Dam, which it calls the country's longest earthen dam. Phu Muang Forest Park has a five-tier waterfall, an earthen elephant kraal from the Dvaravati period and a laterite foundation, and Wikivoyage says the waterfall is mentioned in the Khun Chang Khun Phaen story.

Access is harder here. Wikivoyage says four-wheel-drive vehicles can go only 10 km on the pine forest route and the rest is on foot. Check fees and trails with the national park authority before you go; we have no official park source, so we give no figures.
Getting to Suphan Buri
Wikivoyage describes six driving routes. The shortest is via Bang Bua Thong in Nonthaburi, about 107 km; the route via Lat Lum Kaeo in Pathum Thani is about 115 km and the route via Ayutthaya is 132 km. For rail, Wikipedia says Suphan Buri is at the end of a 157 km branch line of the Southern Line, which meets the main line at Nong Pladuk Junction near Ban Pong. Wikivoyage gives one train a day, leaving Bangkok at 16:40 and arriving at 19:32, and returning at 05:00 to arrive at 08:10, but that information is undated and we could not confirm it, so check the timetable on the State Railway of Thailand site.
| From | How | What the sources say |
|---|---|---|
| Bangkok by car | Via Bang Bua Thong, Lat Lum Kaeo or Ayutthaya | Wikivoyage gives about 107, 115 and 132 km |
| Bangkok by bus | From Mo Chit 2 or the Southern Bus Terminal | Wikivoyage names both terminals, but its operator link is dead, so confirm |
| Bangkok by train | Branch line from Nong Pladuk Junction | Wikipedia gives the 157 km branch; the times on Wikivoyage are old |
| Bangkok to Suphan Buri | Buses and taxis on 12Go | The 12Go page listed 3 buses and 12 taxis |
Booking the trip
When we opened the 12Go page for Bangkok to Suphan Buri in a browser on 16 October 2026, searching for Sunday 18 October with 2 travellers, it listed 15 trips with prices from THB 130 to THB 5,625. By type it showed 3 buses from THB 130 and 12 taxis from THB 2,599. The operators we saw were GO Family for the bus and Kim Transfers Thailand, Torch, AEC 168 Transport and Travel, Than Car Service and Gosafe Transport for taxis. Those figures are what the page showed on that search, not a promise for your date. We link it as a convenient place to compare, and some links on this site may earn us a commission; this does not change the times or fares you see.
When to go
We could not confirm a single best season. Wikipedia describes a hot, humid season from February to mid-May, a rainy southwest monsoon from May to mid-October, and a cooler northeast monsoon from October to mid-February, with a record high of 39.3 degrees Celsius in May and a low of 15.7 in December. If you want birds at Bueng Chawak, Wikipedia puts the arrival of whistling ducks between November and March. The town, Sam Chuk and the temples work all year, but go early or late in the day to avoid the heat. Check the forecast at the Thai Meteorological Department and read our guide to Thailand's best time by region.
