Where to Stay in Chumphon: Town, Thung Wua Laen and Pathio

Chumphon is where most travellers step off a train, bus or plane and onto a boat for Koh Tao, so many only see a pier. The province has places to sleep that suit different plans: a few town hotels beside the railway and bus stations, beaches at Thung Wua Laen and Hat Sai Ri, and a coast around Pathio close to the airport. We have not stayed at any of these hotels. Every card shows facts taken from the hotel's own website and checked on 16 October 2026 after a separate verification pass, with the source linked. Several well-known Chumphon places have no website we could read, so this is a checked list, not a complete one.

How to choose

1. Decide what the stay is for. If it is a night before a ferry, a train or a flight, stay in the town or on the Pathio coast near the airport. If it is the beach itself, choose Thung Wua Laen or Hat Sai Ri, and expect to arrange a car or a transfer because both are well outside the town.
2. Check which pier your boat uses, and how far each hotel is from it. Wikivoyage says the Koh Tao boats leave from a pier south of town at Thung Makham Noi, about 60 km from the airport, and one hotel here gives its own distance to that pier. A Chumphon airport site says a new pier near the airport was due in early 2025; we could not confirm its status, so ask your operator.
3. Read the hotel's own warnings on this page. Two hotels have old or wrong text on their websites, one still saying a pier 'will be' near at the end of 2018 and another showing a Koh Lipe resort's description on its About page. We list them because their facts pages are accurate, but confirm the details by message before you pay.

Three hotels here: A-Te Chumphon Hotel on Tha Taphao Street, Loft Mania Boutique Hotel in the Tha Taphao area, and HOP INN Chumphon. A-Te lists a pool open 07:00 to 21:00 and a restaurant that is closed on Mondays. Loft Mania says it is close to the bus and train stations and has a pool, fitness centre and coffee shop. HOP INN says it is near Ocean Shopping Mall and a short drive from Pak Hat, Thung Wua Laen and Pak Nam beaches.

Choose it if: You are using Chumphon as a stop between a train, bus or flight and a Koh Tao boat, and want a town hotel.

Skip it if: You want sand and swimming at the door.

Mistake to avoid: Do not assume the town is close to the Koh Tao boats; Wikivoyage puts the pier south of town at Thung Makham Noi.

Chumphon Cabana runs an airport shuttle 07:00 to 19:00; Wikipedia gives 17 km to the airport

Two hotels are listed here. Chumphon Cabana Resort lists beachfront, standard, private and elder-friendly villas, a daily airport shuttle and beach wellness sessions. Armonia Village Resort and Spa says it is close to the uncrowded Thung Wua Laen beach and 16 km from the city, with a 26 x 13 metre pool and an Italian restaurant. Wikipedia places Thung Wua Laen 16 km north-east of downtown and 17 km from the airport, and Wikivoyage calls it the province's key beach.

Choose it if: You want a long beach and a villa or village-style stay and are happy to travel for dinner or the pier.

Skip it if: You need to be near the stations or catch an early boat.

Mistake to avoid: Do not read Armonia's 'close proximity' as beachfront; check the walking distance on a map.

The Nest Private Beach Resort gives its address in Hat Sai Ri and says it is next to Mu Ko Chumphon National Park, with beachfront villas of 45 square metres and a restaurant. Moonshine Tented Resort is at Thung Makham in Hat Sai Ri subdistrict, offers tented and studio rooms with a large pool, and says the Thung Makham Noi pier of Lomprayah is 1.5 km away. Wikivoyage lists a shrine to the Prince of Chumphon and a preserved warship near Hat Sai Ri.

Choose it if: You want a beach next to the marine park or the shortest hop to the Koh Tao pier.

Skip it if: You need the airport or the stations within a few minutes.

Mistake to avoid: Do not plan a swim or boat trip from May to mid-October without asking; Moonshine's own page says the park area gets monsoon storms then.

Four hotels sit on this coast. Sara Beachfront Boutique Resort lists eleven suites with an infinity pool and breakfast included. The Village Chumphon Hotel lists suites, a pool, an EV charger and golf-cart service. The Beach Resort and Residence lists 78 rooms and an infinity pool with a children's pool, and says it is 10 minutes from the airport. Laydee Resort has five rooms and says it is a few steps from the beach.

Choose it if: You are flying in or out, or want a resort close to the airport and the Pathio beaches.

Skip it if: You want to be in town or on the marine park side.

Mistake to avoid: Do not trust old transport lines: one hotel still describes a pier 'to be' near in 2018, and another shows a different resort's About text.

Getting to Chumphon

Chumphon has an airport in Pathio, a railway station in the town and the ferry pier for Koh Tao at Thung Makham Noi. The button opens the 12Go Bangkok to Chumphon page, whose title on 16 October 2026 offered train, bus, ferry, van, flight and taxi options. We saw no fares or timetable figures there that we can quote. Check the arrival point, which pier your boat leaves from and the first boat of the day before you book. • Open the map link for the area and then check the hotel's exact pin. A neighbourhood name can cover a wide area.
• Check the final rate with tax, payment timing, cancellation terms and what the room includes.
• If arriving late, confirm the check-in method and the last transport that actually runs.
• Distances on the hotels' own pages vary. Wikipedia's airport article gives 35 km from Chumphon town to the airport and Wikivoyage gives 30 km, and hotel pages quote their own times, such as 40 minutes from the airport for HOP INN. Ask your hotel for the drive time from the place you will arrive.
• Some hotel sites here are in Thai first and some pages are old. The monsoon weather in the marine park area runs from May to mid-October according to one resort's own page, so ask about boat trips and the sea before you book a beach stay in those months.
