Nan is a quiet northern province near the Laos border, and where you sleep decides your trip. The old town has the temples, the museum and the night walking street within walking distance. The mountain roads towards Doi Phu Kha and the salt wells of Bo Kluea are 60 km or more north, so a base in Pua or Bo Kluea saves driving but takes you away from the town. This page compares four areas: the old town around Wat Phumin, Phu Phiang just outside the town, the rice-field valley of Pua and the valley of Bo Kluea.

Use the quick answer above, then the area table. We show no hotel prices because rates change with dates and room type, and the booking buttons open a search for your own dates. We have not stayed at any of these hotels. Every card shows facts taken from the hotel's own website and checked on 16 October 2026 after a separate verification pass, with the source linked. Facts we could not re-find on the site were removed. Several well-known Nan hotels have no official site we could read, so this is a checked list, not a complete one (see the FAQ).

How to choose

  1. Decide what you want to see first. If it is Wat Phumin, the National Museum and an evening walk, stay in the old town. If it is the Doi Phu Kha road, rice fields and the salt wells, split your stay or base yourself in Pua or Bo Kluea. Emmaline Hotel Nan's own page lists Pua at 66 km (70 minutes) and Sri Nan National Park at 72 km (90 minutes), so the mountains are day trips from town.
  2. Plan the transport. A park guide says there is no public transport into Doi Phu Kha National Park, only your own vehicle or a private taxi, and Boklua View gives two road routes from Nan city: Highway 101 to Pua and then road 1256, or via Santisuk and Highway 1081. Visama says its camp is two hours by road from Nan Airport.
  3. Check the practical details. A park guide says Doi Phu Kha National Park is closed from 1 June to 30 September each year, while Wikipedia gives the monsoon as late April through October, so check dates before you build a rainy-season trip. Confirm the final rate with tax, transfers and cancellation terms; Visama says last-minute bookings are non-refundable.

Four hotels on this list are in the town centre. Mintara says it is one street behind Wat Phumin, the walking street and the Nan National Museum, and Emmaline Hotel Nan says it is within 750 metres of the walking street and Wat Phumin. Nan Boutique Hotel gives the night walking street as 1.3 km away, and Pukha Nanfa describes a three-storey teak building with fourteen rooms on Sumonthewarat Road. This is the area for a first visit if you want to walk to the temple, the museum and the evening street.

Choose it if: You want to walk to Wat Phumin and use Nan town as a base for day trips by car.

Skip it if: Your main goal is the Doi Phu Kha mountain road or rice fields; those are 60 km or more away.

Mistake to avoid: Do not assume every town hotel is beside Wat Phumin; the hotels give distances from 550 metres to 1.3 km, so check the map pin.

How you arrive
Nan Airport, then a taxi; Nan de Panna says it is 10 minutes from the airport

Nan Seasons, Nan Boutique Resort and Nan de Panna all give addresses in Phu Phiang. Nan Seasons describes itself as a small private 4-star resort with mountain and rice-field views and teak bungalows. Nan Boutique Resort calls itself a hillside retreat for families and says it is about 20 minutes from the city centre. Nan de Panna has 8 rooms with river-view balconies, but its site also advertises a naturist experience, so it is not a family option.

Choose it if: You want a pool or garden, a quiet evening and a short drive into Nan town.

Skip it if: You want to walk to Wat Phumin and the night walking street.

Mistake to avoid: Do not book on the word 'boutique' alone; read the Nan de Panna note on its naturist experience before choosing it with children.

Nan Airport, then a long taxi or a rental car; no public transport into Doi Phu Kha National Park, per a park guide

Non Na Pua says it has a single freestanding bungalow in a private garden about 4 km from Pua town and about 60 km north of Nan town, between rice fields and within 700 metres of Wat Phuket. Nan@Pua says it is comfortable and near Pua town centre; its site lists no room types and also accepts tour groups and parties. Pua is also where the road to Doi Phu Kha National Park starts: a park guide says the headquarters is 24 km from Pua on Highway 1256.

Choose it if: You want a rural base close to the Doi Phu Kha road, with rice fields outside.

Skip it if: You rely on public transport or want restaurants and shops within walking distance of the hotel.

Nan Airport, then about two hours by road (Visama says two hours; Boklua View says just over 100 km from Nan city)

Boklua View says it is just over 100 km north of Nan city and lists 21 accommodation options with bamboo accents. Phukananan describes a bamboo-inspired retreat beside a mountain stream with four room types and complimentary bicycles. Visama Explorer Nan is a camp of eight safari tents in the village of Ban Wen, just north of Bo Kluea, sold as journeys that include transfers, guided experiences and two meals a day. Wikipedia says the district is known for its ancient salt wells.

Choose it if: You want the mountain valley, the salt wells and quiet evenings, and you accept a long drive.

Skip it if: You have one night in Nan or want to be near restaurants, shops and the night walking street.

Mistake to avoid: Do not underestimate the drive: the two road routes from Nan city are both long mountain roads, and Visama says two hours from the airport.

Day trips and planning from Nan

We have no registered tour listing for Nan yet, so we show no tour prices. The button opens Klook's own search, which currently earns us nothing, and results may be limited. Many Nan resorts and guesthouses arrange their own day trips to Doi Samer Dao and Bo Kluea, so ask where you stay first.

Disclosure: we are an affiliate partner of travel booking sites, but these links currently open the providers' own sites and earn us nothing yet.

Getting to Nan

Nan has its own small airport, and the 12Go Bangkok to Nan page lists a mix of bus, van and flight options. When we opened it in a browser on 16 October 2026 it showed 13 listed companies and 22 departures a day, a distance of 883 km, the earliest departure at 7:30 AM and the latest at 8:00 PM. We show no price because it changes by date; check the operator, the departure point and the travel time before you book. Our Nan guide covers the airport, the long road from Bangkok and the mountain roads.

Affiliate disclosure: these links may earn us a commission if you book, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we write.

Before you book

  • Open the map link for the area and then check the hotel's exact pin. A neighbourhood name can cover a wide area.
  • Check the final rate with tax, payment timing, cancellation terms and what the room includes.
  • If arriving late, confirm the check-in method and the last transport that actually runs.
  • Check opening dates and conditions for the places you plan to visit. A park guide says Doi Phu Kha National Park closes from 1 June to 30 September, and we could not verify entrance fees from an official page, so check with the park or the Department of National Parks before you go.
  • Drivers should allow extra time. Boklua View says its resort is just over 100 km from Nan city on mountain roads, and Visama says two hours from Nan Airport; do not plan a same-day return from Bo Kluea to a flight without a buffer.

FAQ

Where should first-time visitors stay in Nan?

For temples and the night walking street, stay in the old town; Mintara and Emmaline both place themselves within a short walk of Wat Phumin. For rice fields and the Doi Phu Kha road, look at Pua, and for the salt wells and mountain quiet, look at Bo Kluea. The cards show what each hotel says on its own site.

How far are Pua and Bo Kluea from Nan town?

Emmaline Hotel Nan lists Pua at 66 km (70 minutes) and Sri Nan National Park at 72 km (90 minutes). Non Na Pua says it is about 60 km north of Nan town, and Boklua View says it is just over 100 km north of Nan city. Visama says two hours by road from Nan Airport.

Is there public transport to Doi Phu Kha National Park?

A national-park guide says there are no public transport options into the park; you need your own car or bike, or a private taxi. Check the park authority for current rules, because we could not read an official page.

Is the Doi Phu Kha area open in the rainy season?

A national-park guide says Doi Phu Kha National Park is closed from 1 June to 30 September every year, and Wikipedia gives Nan's monsoon as late April through October. Individual hotels may stay open, so check each hotel's own dates and the park's current status.

How do I get to Nan from Bangkok?

Nan has its own airport, and Visama says AirAsia and Nok Air fly daily from Don Mueang in about 80 minutes. The 12Go Bangkok to Nan page showed 13 companies and 22 departures a day when we opened it on 16 October 2026, including buses, vans and flights over a distance of 883 km. Check the operator and time before booking.

Which Nan hotel is not suitable for families?

Nan de Panna Resort and Spa advertises a naturist experience in and around its rooms and says no clothing is allowed in the hot tub. Its other facts are listed on its card, but families should look at other hotels.

Why are some well-known Nan hotels not listed?

We only list hotels whose own website we could open and quote. Dhevaraj Hotel, Baan Nan, Wiangkaew Hotel, Khum Muang Min, Nan Nakara and others did not give us a readable official site, so we did not include them. This is a checked list, not a full one.
