Loei is a mountain province in north-eastern Thailand on the Mekong, and most visitors come for Chiang Khan, an old wooden town on the river about 50 km from Loei city. The place you stay decides how you spend your evenings: on the walking street along Chai Khong Road, out at the Mekong rapids of Kaeng Khut Khu, in Loei city, or in the mountains of Phu Ruea and Dan Sai. This page compares those four areas with 12 hotels.

Use the quick answer above, then the area table. We show no hotel prices because rates change with dates and room type, and the booking buttons open a search for your own dates. We have not stayed at any of these hotels. Every card shows facts taken from the hotel's own website and checked on 16 October 2026 after a separate verification pass, with the source linked. We could not open the official sites of some places near Phu Kradueng, so the park area has no private hotel here (see the FAQ). This is a checked list, not a complete one.

How to choose

  1. Decide whether you want to walk or ride. In the old town the walking street runs along Chai Khong Road beside the Mekong, and a travel guide says it is open about 16:00 to 22:00. Hotels on it put you at the stalls and the dawn alms-giving. Rivertree says it is 700 metres from the walking street, and Chiangkhan Hill says it is 5 km away beside Kaeng Khut Khu, so those two need a short ride.
  2. Choose the base for the trip you plan. Loei city suits flights, buses and Phu Bo Bit; Chiang Khan is about an hour further, according to a travel guide that gives 50 km from Loei town; Phu Ruea has raised villas ringed by mountains; Dan Sai is the town of the Phi Ta Khon festival.
  3. Check the small print. The Old Chiangkhan asks for cancellation at least 21 days before arrival, Chiangkhan Hill bans pets, cooking and camping, and the Phurua Keeree house rules list late check-out charges. A travel guide says most vendors on the walking street take cash only, so bring some.

Bus or songthaew from Loei city, then walk

Three places put themselves on or beside the walking street. The Old Chiangkhan is built from a wooden house more than 100 years old and can prepare sticky rice for the morning alms-giving. With A View has 9 rooms between Soi 14 and Soi 15, converted from an old two-storey house. U ChiangKhan is a group of four hotels beside the walking street. A travel guide says the street is open about 16:00 to 22:00 and that most vendors take cash only.

Choose it if: You want to step out onto the stalls, the old shophouses and the Mekong without a ride.

Skip it if: You want a pool or a quiet bank, or you are driving and want to park beside your room.

Mistake to avoid: Do not assume a room on the street is quiet at night; ask the hotel about the evening crowd and parking.

Four stays sit outside the old town. Rivertree says it is 700 metres from the walking street, that every room has a river view and a balcony, and that it has a mineral-water pool beside the Mekong. Chiangkhan Hill says it is 5 km from the walking street, close to Kaeng Khut Khu, with 19 panoramic Mekong-view rooms and a Mekong-side restaurant. The Camp Chiangkhan offers furnished tents by the Mekong, and Bansuan Phuhong places itself on the summit area of Phu Hong mountain.

Choose it if: You want a pool, a riverside view or a tent, and you are happy to ride into town in the evening.

Skip it if: You want to walk to the stalls at night or you have no car and no plan for a ride back.

Mistake to avoid: Do not compare the distances without the starting point: Chiangkhan Hill says 5 km from the walking street and 4 km from the district town on its own pages.

Loei Airport is 4.9 to 6 km away per the hotels; the bus terminal is about 2 km from Loei Palace

Three hotels are in Mueang Loei. Loei Palace has 156 rooms and a pool open 09:00 to 20:00, sits next to Kud Pong Public Park and puts the Naga statue and Saturday walking street about 350 metres away. Fortune D Hotel Loei is on the main road, 4.9 km from the airport, with renovated non-smoking rooms. HOP INN Loei says it is about 10 minutes from the airport and near Makro, Big C and Thai Loei Market. Loei city is a base for Loei rather than the Mekong: a travel guide puts Chiang Khan about 1 hour away.

Choose it if: You arrive by plane or bus, want a city hotel, or plan Phu Bo Bit and onward trips.

Skip it if: You want the Mekong, wooden shophouses and the evening stalls of Chiang Khan.

Phurua Keeree Resort in Phu Ruea says it has 22 raised-floor villas linked by bridges and ringed by mountains, and lists bicycles, hammocks, an organic vegetable plot and sticky-rice alms-giving. Dansai Resort in Dan Sai town lists bungalows, fan and air-conditioned rooms in a garden. Dan Sai is the home of the Phi Ta Khon festival. Wikipedia gives two timings for it, sometime between March and July in one article and around late June to early July in another.

Choose it if: You want mountain quiet at Phu Ruea or a simple base for the Phi Ta Khon festival in Dan Sai.

Skip it if: You do not have a car or want to be near the Chiang Khan walking street.

Mistake to avoid: Do not plan this as a day trip from Chiang Khan: Chiangkhan Hill warns of a poor road between Phu Ruea and Chiang Khan via Tha Li, and advises going through Mueang Loei.

Day trips and planning in Loei and Chiang Khan

We have no registered tour listing for Loei yet, so we show no tour prices. The button opens Klook's own search for Loei, which currently earns us nothing, and the results may be limited. Many hotels and guesthouses in Chiang Khan sell their own boat and bicycle trips, so ask your hotel first.

Disclosure: we are an affiliate partner of travel booking sites, but these links currently open the providers' own sites and earn us nothing yet.

Getting to Loei and Chiang Khan

The 12Go page for Bangkok to Loei goes to Loei city, not Chiang Khan. When we opened it in a browser on 16 October 2026 it listed 8 companies, about 6 departures a day, a distance of 614 km, an earliest departure at 7:30 AM and a latest at 7:00 PM. A travel guide says Chiang Khan is about 1 hour further, 50 km from Loei town. Check the departure point and your onward bus before you book.

Affiliate disclosure: these links may earn us a commission if you book, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we write.

Before you book

  • Open the map link for the area and then check the hotel's exact pin. A neighbourhood name can cover a wide area.
  • Check the final rate with tax, payment timing, cancellation terms and what the room includes.
  • If arriving late, confirm the check-in method and the last transport that actually runs.
  • If you want Phu Kradueng, read the park's own page first. The DNP says the tourist season runs from 1 October to 31 May and is closed from 1 June to 30 September, and that you should reserve ahead if you want to stay overnight on the summit. We found no private hotel with a readable official site close to the park, so use the DNP booking page for park accommodation or look at Loei city.
  • Some Phi Ta Khon dates differ by source: Wikipedia's festival article says sometime between March and July, while its Dan Sai article says around late June to early July. If you are travelling for the festival, confirm the dates locally before you pay for a non-refundable room.

FAQ

Where should first-time visitors stay for Chiang Khan?

Start with the old town on the walking street if you want to be at the stalls and the morning alms-giving: With A View, The Old Chiangkhan and the U ChiangKhan group are all there. If you prefer a pool and a river view, look at Rivertree, 700 metres away by its own count. For Kaeng Khut Khu itself, look at Chiangkhan Hill.

How do I get to Chiang Khan from Bangkok?

A common route is to go to Loei city first and continue to Chiang Khan. A travel guide gives about 1 hour by songthaew or bus for the 50 km from Loei town. The 12Go page for Bangkok to Loei lists several operators and a few departures a day; see the travel guide for what we saw on 16 October 2026.

Is Chiang Khan far from Loei city?

A travel guide gives about 1 hour and 50 km from Loei town. Chiangkhan Hill adds a driving warning: it says GPS may route you on a poor road between Phu Ruea, Tha Li and Chiang Khan and advises the route through Mueang Loei instead.

When is the Chiang Khan walking street open?

A travel guide says it is open every evening, about 16:00 to 22:00, along Chai Khong Road, and that most vendors take cash only. We could not verify hours from an official page, so check locally.

Can I stay near Phu Kradueng?

We could not find a private hotel near the park with an official site we could read, so none is listed. The DNP park page sets the tourist season from 1 October to 31 May and closes it from 1 June to 30 September. Use the DNP booking page for park accommodation or base yourself in Loei city.

Is there a hotel near Kaeng Khut Khu?

Chiangkhan Hill says it is close to Kaeng Khut Khu and 5 km from the walking street, with a Mekong-side restaurant. Its own travel page gives Kaeng Khut Khu as 4 km from the district town, so distances differ by starting point.

Can I bring a pet?

Chiangkhan Hill and The Old Chiangkhan both say no pets. We did not find a pet policy we could verify for the other hotels, so ask before you book.
