Khon Kaen is the biggest city in central Isaan and a base for the Phu Wiang dinosaur sites, Chonnabot silk villages and Ubolratana Dam. Most hotels are in the grid of roads in the city centre, with a few on the western side near the airport and one cluster of houses by the dam. This page covers four areas, with 13 hotels whose facts come from their own websites.

Use the quick answer above, then the area table. We show no hotel prices because rates change with dates and room type, and the booking buttons open a search for your own dates. We have not stayed at any of these hotels. Every card shows facts taken from the hotel's own website and checked on 16 October 2026 after a separate verification pass, with the source linked. Several well-known Khon Kaen hotels block automated checks or have no readable official site, so this is a checked list, not a complete one.

How to choose

  1. Decide what the stay is for. For the city, the lake and the museums, stay on Srichan Road or in the central Nai Mueang area. For an early or late flight, look at the west side near the airport. For a quiet night by water, Khun Saichol Villa at Ubolratana Dam is the only option here, and it needs a car.
  2. Check the distances yourself. Wikivoyage says Khon Kaen's centre is built on a grid of wide roads that is not pleasant to walk, so 'near the lake' on a hotel page can still mean a taxi or a tuk-tuk. Hotel pages give very different kinds of distance: kilometres, minutes by car, or only a list of landmarks.
  3. Check which bus terminal your coach uses. Wikivoyage says long-distance buses have used the Provincial Transport Station on the ring road, about 8 km south of the centre, since 1 December 2017, and a hotel page that says 'near the bus terminal' may describe an older terminal.

How you arrive
About 20 minutes by car per the HOP INN pages; Wikipedia puts the airport 8 km west of the centre

Five hotels here: Kosa Hotel (250/252 Sri Chant Road), Ad Lib Khon Kaen inside the Khon Kaen Innovation Centre (999 Srichan Road), Charoen Thani Princess (260 Srichan Road), B2 Khon Kaen and HOP INN Srichan Building A. B2's page lists Central Plaza at 1.9 km and Phra Mahathat Kaen Nakhon at 3.0 km; HOP INN's page says Kaen Nakhon Lake and the National Museum are nearby.

Choose it if: You want a city-centre stay with a choice from budget to design hotel.

Skip it if: You want quiet water views or a garden resort.

Mistake to avoid: Do not read 'in the city centre' as 'walkable'. Wikivoyage says the centre is a grid of wide roads that is unpleasant to walk, so plan on short taxi or tuk-tuk rides.

Heritage Grand lists suites, a Chinese restaurant and a spa; Nadee 10 says it has 70 rooms and a pool bar.

Choose it if: You want a larger hotel or a design hotel with a pool and a central address.

Skip it if: You want to be right beside the lake with a view.

Mistake to avoid: Do not treat Heritage Grand and Pullman Khon Kaen Raja Orchid as two hotels without checking: both sites give the same address and telephone number.

Rachawadee says 0.5 km; Green Hotel says 10 km

Three hotels here. Rachawadee Khon Kaen Airport Hotel says the airport is 0.5 km away, Khon Kaen University 4.0 km and Central Khon Kaen 5.2 km. Green Hotel & Convention (Prachasamosorn Road) says it is 10 km from the airport and 6 km from Central Plaza and has free parking. HOP INN Mittraphap says it is on a main highway and suits long-distance travellers.

Choose it if: You are arriving or leaving by air or car and want to avoid the city grid.

Skip it if: You want to walk to restaurants or the lake in the evening.

Mistake to avoid: Do not assume 'near the airport' means near the old town; these hotels need a taxi, a ride-hailing car or your own car for the lake and the museums.

One option here: Khun Saichol Villa, listed on an EGAT website, with three houses (Baan Chom Duean, Baan Chom Dao and Baan Ing Phu). Skip it if: You rely on taxis or want restaurants and nightlife nearby.

Day trips and planning from Khon Kaen

We have no registered tour listing for Khon Kaen yet, so we show no tour prices. The button opens Klook's own search for Khon Kaen, which currently earns us nothing, and results may be limited. Ask your hotel about Phu Wiang and Chonnabot day trips.

Disclosure: we are an affiliate partner of travel booking sites, but these links currently open the providers' own sites and earn us nothing yet.

Getting to Khon Kaen

Khon Kaen has an airport about 8 km west of the centre per Wikipedia, a rebuilt elevated railway station, and a long-distance bus terminal on the ring road per Wikivoyage. The button opens the 12Go Bangkok to Khon Kaen page, which on 16 October 2026 was titled 'Bangkok to Khon Kaen by bus, train, van, flight, taxi' and listed 40 departures a day, the earliest at 7:00 AM and the latest at 9:42 PM, with operators including AEC 168, Chan Tour, Easyride, Gosafe, Kim Transfers, Thai AirAsia, Thai Lion Air and Thai Railway. We do not quote its fares. Check the arrival point before you book. Our Khon Kaen guide covers the airport and the terminals.

Affiliate disclosure: these links may earn us a commission if you book, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we write.

Before you book

  • Open the map link for the area and then check the hotel's exact pin. A neighbourhood name can cover a wide area.
  • Check the final rate with tax, payment timing, cancellation terms and what the room includes.
  • If arriving late, confirm the check-in method and the last transport that actually runs.
  • Distances on hotel pages are not comparable. B2 Khon Kaen gives 54.6 km to Ubolratana Dam and 85.0 km to Phu Wiang National Park, Wikipedia gives about 50 km and about 85 km, and these are road and straight-line figures that differ. Ask your hotel for the driving time.
  • Several hotel sites on this page carry old dates: Charoen Thani's pages say 2009, Kosa's footer says 2022, and Green Hotel and Ad Lib still show 2022 offers. Confirm rooms, rates and policies by phone or message before you book a non-refundable room.

FAQ

Where should first-time visitors stay in Khon Kaen?

For the city centre, start with Srichan Road or the central Nai Mueang area. B2 Khon Kaen's page lists the City Pillar at 1.7 km, Central Plaza at 1.9 km and Phra Mahathat Kaen Nakhon at 3.0 km. Ad Lib Khon Kaen and Kosa Hotel are on Srichan Road, and Heritage Grand is on Prachasumran Road.

Which hotel is closest to Khon Kaen Airport?

Rachawadee Khon Kaen Airport Hotel says the airport is 0.5 km away. Green Hotel says 10 km. Wikipedia says the airport is about 8 km west of the city centre, so a city-centre hotel is a short drive away, and HOP INN's own pages say about 20 minutes depending on traffic.

Can I stay near Ubolratana Dam?

Yes. Khun Saichol Villa, listed on an EGAT website, offers three houses beside the reservoir and a telephone line open from 07:00 to 21:00. The site is in Thai only. B2 Khon Kaen's page puts the dam 54.6 km from that hotel, so a day trip from the city is also possible.

Is it better to stay near Phu Wiang for the dinosaur sites?

We found no hotel with a readable official site near Phu Wiang, so we list none. Wikipedia puts Phu Wiang National Park about 85 km north-west of Khon Kaen, and B2 Khon Kaen's page says 85.0 km, so most visitors go as a day trip from the city.

How do I get to Khon Kaen from Bangkok?

By air, by train, by bus or van, or by car. The 12Go page for Bangkok to Khon Kaen listed buses, trains, vans, flights and taxis on 16 October 2026, with 40 departures a day, the earliest at 7:00 AM and the latest at 9:42 PM. Check which terminal or station you arrive at before booking a hotel.

Are these hotels checked and are prices shown?

Facts come from each hotel's own website and were checked a second time on 16 October 2026, with the source linked on every card. We show no prices, ratings or reviews because we have no current verified source, and we have not stayed at any of these hotels.

Do Heritage Grand and Pullman Khon Kaen refer to the same hotel?

Both sites give the same street address (Prachasumran Road) and the same telephone number, so they appear to be the same building under different names. We could not find a statement explaining it, so check which name appears on your booking.

Which hotels are in the budget range?

B2 Khon Kaen, B2 Khon Kaen Premier, Khon Kaen Hotel and the two HOP INN hotels describe themselves as budget, affordable or economy stays. We do not quote rates; use the booking buttons to see rates for your dates.
