Ranong is the northernmost province on Thailand's Andaman coast, a small border town with hot springs behind it and the islands of Koh Phayam and Koh Chang in front. Where you sleep depends on which of those you came for: the town for hot springs, mangroves and an easy bus connection, the mainland coast for a sea view, or an island for beaches reached by boat from the Paknam pier. This page covers 12 hotels in five areas.
Use the quick answer above, then the area table. We show no hotel prices because rates change with dates and room type, and the booking buttons open a search for your own dates. We have not stayed at any of these hotels. Every card shows facts taken from the hotel's own website and checked on 16 October 2026 after a separate verification pass, with the source linked. We could not find a readable official site for many Ranong hotels that sell only through booking sites or social media, so this is a checked list, not a complete one.
How to choose
- Decide whether you want the island. Koh Phayam and Koh Chang are reached by boat from the pier at Paknam, about 4 km west of the town centre according to Wikivoyage, so a mainland night before the boat is common. On the islands, ask each hotel about electricity and cash: one Koh Phayam resort says it has a 24-hour generator, another says bungalows have no TV or fridge because island power is limited, and two resorts say there is no ATM on the island.
- Check the boats before you pick the island. The hotels' own pages disagree: The Blue Sky Resort Koh Payam says speedboats run almost every hour and take about 45 minutes, Payam Cottage says speedboats and ferries normally run twice a day with more in high season, and Koh Chang Resort says its speedboat is high season only. Fares also differ between those pages, so ask at the pier or the hotel for your dates.
- Check the season. Wikipedia says the rainy season in Ranong lasts about eight months, and Wikivoyage gives the dive season as the end of October to May. One resort says its island can be visited all year, but it is wise to confirm that your hotel and the boats are running in the wet months.

- Ranong Airport is about 24 km south of Ranong per Wikipedia; buses and songthaews serve the town
Three hotels here: Blu Monkey Hub & Hotel on Ruangrat Road with a pool, free snacks and a 24-hour desk; Farm House Hotel on the same road with a restaurant, evening live music and a walking street in front from December to April; and Numsai Khaosuay Resort on a hill slope above the main road, with hot-spring mineral water piped to each room by its own account. Wikivoyage lists the Rattanarangsarn Palace, Wat Suwan Khiri, the Raksawarin hot springs and the Ranong Governor's Grave among the sights; we could not verify opening hours.
Choose it if: You want to walk to food, catch a bus or boat in the morning, or soak in hot-spring water.
Skip it if: You want a beach at your door.
Mistake to avoid: Do not assume the hot springs are in the hotel: only Numsai Khaosuay says its room water comes from a hot spring, and the public Raksawarin springs are a separate site.

- The Blue Sky Resort Ranong says its van from the airport takes about 30 minutes
Two hotels are away from the town centre. The Blue Sky Resort Ranong has a 100-seat restaurant and says the mountains and two islands of Myanmar are clearly visible. Ranong Resort & Laguna is in Muang Klang subdistrict, Kapoe district, with a water park open daily from 11:00 to 20:00 by its Thai site, a meeting room for 60 to 100 people and rooms for 80 to 100 guests. Laem Son National Park, about 60 km south of Ranong per Wikipedia, is the nearest national park coast.
Choose it if: You want a sea view or a group base and have a car or van.
Skip it if: You want to walk to markets and the bus station.
Mistake to avoid: Do not assume either hotel is close to town: neither official site gives a distance, so ask for the drive time.

Phayam Lodge puts its beach bungalows 15 to 30 metres from the beach, offers a family house with a kitchen, and has the Phayam Surfers school and a beach bar on the sand. Aow Yai Bungalows, on the same bay, calls itself the first bungalows on the island about 40 years ago and lists rooms from basic fan to VIP beachfront.
Choose it if: You want a sunset bay, simple beach bungalows and a surf lesson.
Skip it if: You want pool resorts or a short walk to the pier.
Mistake to avoid: Do not assume nightly rates or opening months from this page: both sites print rates and Phayam Lodge divides the year into seasons, so check your dates.

- Payam Cottage says the resort is about 5 km from the pier by motorcycle and has no transfer service
Three hotels sit on this bay. Payam Cottage Resort lists a swimming pool, pool table, kids playground, outdoor gym and kayaks, and runs a generator for 24-hour power. Marina Resort has a beachfront restaurant, bar and cafe, motorbike and bicycle rental and paddleboarding, but says its bungalows have no TV or fridge and there is no in-room wifi. Buffalo Bay Vacation Club pitches long stays, mentions mangrove forest at the south of the bay and says breakfast is optional.
Choose it if: You want a pool or a long stay on a quiet bay and can ride from the pier.
Skip it if: You want to walk to the pier or to nightlife.
Mistake to avoid: Do not assume the power is the same everywhere on the bay: one resort has 24-hour power, another says limited electricity means no TV or fridge.

The Blue Sky Resort Koh Payam opened in 1999 with 5 villas and now has 30 rooms, with overwater villas 3 to 4 metres apart among mangroves, and accepts credit cards. Koh Chang Resort is on the separate island of Koh Chang (Ranong), which Wikivoyage puts at 18 square kilometres with about 80 homes. Its own page lists 25 rooms in three types, electricity from 6 pm to midnight and no ATM on the island; the page was last updated in 2017.
Choose it if: You want a villa near the Koh Phayam pier, or a very simple island stay on Koh Chang.
Skip it if: You want a swimming beach with sunset bars or a surf lesson.
Mistake to avoid: Do not confuse this Koh Chang in Ranong with the larger Koh Chang in Trat on the Gulf of Thailand.

Getting to Ranong
Ranong has an airport with Thai AirAsia flights from Bangkok Don Mueang according to Wikipedia, and overnight buses from Bangkok. The button opens the 12Go Bangkok to Ranong page, which on 16 October 2026 was titled as bus, van, flight and taxi, and whose editorial text said southbound buses leave the Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Mai) and the journey takes eight to nine hours, with night buses the usual choice. We did not capture a list of operators, departures or fares, so we quote none. From Ranong town the island boats leave from the pier at Paknam. Our Ranong guide covers the town, the hot springs, the mangroves and the boats.

Before you book
- Open the map link for the area and then check the hotel's exact pin. A neighbourhood name can cover a wide area.
- Check the final rate with tax, payment timing, cancellation terms and what the room includes.
- If arriving late, confirm the check-in method and the last transport that actually runs.
- Island resorts on this page differ a lot in electricity, wifi and cash. Marina Resort says in-room wifi is not available and its bungalow has no TV or fridge, Payam Cottage says it runs a generator around the clock, and Koh Chang Resort's own pages disagree on whether power is 24 hours or only from 6 pm. Ask the resort exactly what is on, and bring cash.
- Several hotel sites here are in Thai only or show dated footers: Farm House Hotel says 2023, Ranong Resort & Laguna says 2020, Payam Cottage says 2015, and Koh Chang Resort's page was last updated in 2017. Confirm current rooms, rates and policies by phone or message before you book a non-refundable room.
FAQ
Where should I stay in Ranong if I only have one night?
Stay in Ranong town if you are catching a bus or the island boat the next morning. Blu Monkey Hub & Hotel and Farm House Hotel are on Ruangrat Road, and Numsai Khaosuay Resort is on a hill slope above the main road. If you want to be nearer the sea, look at The Blue Sky Resort Ranong, which says it has a view of two islands of Myanmar.
Do I have to stay on Koh Phayam to see it?
No, but the boats are the limit. Wikivoyage says boats run several times a day in high season from the ferry terminal west of the town, and Koh Chang Resort says its speedboat runs only in high season. A night on the island gives you the sunset on Ao Yai and the quiet after the day boats leave.
Which Koh Phayam bay should I choose?
Ao Yai is the bay Phayam Lodge calls the big bay, with a surf school on the beach. Ao Khao Kwai, which hotels also call Buffalo Bay, has Marina Resort, Buffalo Bay Vacation Club and Payam Cottage. The Blue Sky Resort Koh Payam is on the east port side at Ao Mae Mai, a few minutes from the pier by its own figure.
Is there an ATM on Koh Phayam or Koh Chang?
Not according to the hotels. Payam Cottage and Koh Chang Resort both say there is no cash machine on the island, and Payam Cottage adds that most resorts and shops do not take cards. The Blue Sky Resort Koh Payam says it accepts credit cards. Bring cash.
Is the Kawthaung boat to Myanmar a good day trip from Ranong?
We cannot recommend it. Wikivoyage says longtail boats cross in about 20 minutes but also warns that entry from this border may be restricted because of the civil war in Myanmar (its note was last updated 1 May 2026). The UK FCDO advises against all travel to part of Tanintharyi Region and against all but essential travel to the part south of Tanintharyi township. We did not verify the current crossing status, so check official sources first.
Is Ranong a good place for a visa run?
Check the rules first. The UK FCDO says visa-exempt tourist entry through land-border checkpoints is normally limited to 2 entries per calendar year, and Wikivoyage warns the Kawthaung crossing may be restricted. We have not verified the crossing, so confirm with Thai immigration or your embassy.
Why are many well-known Ranong hotels not listed?
We only list hotels whose own website we could open and quote. Many Ranong hotels sell only through booking sites or Facebook pages, and a few sites would not open for us, so we left them out rather than guess.
Do prices include the boat or the transfer?
Not unless the hotel says so. The Blue Sky Resort Ranong says its van from the airport takes about 30 minutes, and Payam Cottage says it has no transfer service on the island. Ask what is included before you pay.
