Udon Thani is a large northern Isan city that most visitors use as a base for the Red Lotus Sea, Ban Chiang, Phu Phra Bat and the border at Nong Khai. This winter it also hosts the Udon Thani International Horticultural Expo, from 1 November 2026 to 14 March 2027. This page covers hotels in the city and in two places outside it, in five areas. The attractions are in our Udon Thani travel guide.

Use the quick answer above, then the area table. We show no hotel prices because rates change with dates and room type, and the booking buttons open a search for your own dates. We have not stayed at any of these hotels. Every card shows facts taken from the hotel's own website and checked on 16 October 2026 after a separate verification pass, with the source linked. Some well-known Udon Thani hotels have no official site we could read, so this is a checked list, not a complete one.

How to choose

  1. Decide what the stay is for. For the city, the mall and the stations, stay in the centre; for UD Town and a short drive to the airport, look at the UD Town side; for a sunrise boat on the Red Lotus Sea, stay near Kumphawapi, because the lake is roughly 40 to 45 minutes from the city by the resort's own figures.
  2. Plan transport. Wikivoyage says public transport to the attractions is poor, so Wat Pa Phu Kon, Phu Phra Bat and Ban Chiang are easiest by rental car, taxi or tour. None of the hotels we could read is close to Ban Chiang or Phu Phra Bat, so expect a day trip from the city.
  3. If you travel during the expo, book early. We have no verified occupancy data, but the expo runs 134 days at Nong Dae wetland, about 9 km from the centre according to Hotel MOCO's own guide, and a long event in a mid-sized city is a reason not to leave booking to the last week.

The airport is about 4 km away per Wikivoyage; Centara says a 20-minute drive

Five hotels on this list are here. Centara Udon says it is steps from Central Plaza and 800 metres from the train station, and The Pannarai Hotel says it is minutes from the mall, hospital, night market and the bus and train stations. Civilize Hotel and Napalai Hotel are on Posri Road, VELA Dhi is on Adulyadej Road, and Civilize offers free bicycles. Wikivoyage describes the area around Central Plaza as the main shopping and tourist-entertainment zone.

Choose it if: You want food, shopping and the stations within a short trip, and plan day trips by car or tour.

Skip it if: You want lotus ponds or countryside at the door.

Mistake to avoid: Do not assume every hotel here is walkable to the stations; check the map for the exact street.

Phukaning Hotel, a Minimal-Esarn style hotel near the bypass in Samprao, puts UD Town 5 km and the airport 9 km away. All three also rent function or meeting rooms, so ask about event nights.

Choose it if: You want a mall and restaurants next door and an easy run to the airport.

Skip it if: You want to walk to the railway station.

Mistake to avoid: Do not treat this as one tight neighbourhood; Phukaning is 5 km from UD Town by its own figure.

Day trips and planning from Udon Thani

We have no registered tour listing for Udon Thani yet, so we show no tour prices. The button opens Klook's own search for Udon Thani, which currently earns us nothing, and results may be limited. Wikivoyage says public transport to the attractions is poor, so ask your hotel about cars and day trips first.

Disclosure: we are an affiliate partner of travel booking sites, but these links currently open the providers' own sites and earn us nothing yet.

Getting to Udon Thani

Udon Thani has an international airport, trains and buses from Bangkok and Khon Kaen. The button opens the 12Go Bangkok to Udon Thani page, which on 16 October 2026 listed operators including Thai Railway, Nok Air, Thai AirAsia and Thai Lion Air and 49 departures a day, the earliest at 12:00 AM and the latest at 9:42 PM. We do not quote fares or the distance shown on that page. Our Udon Thani guide covers the sights and the expo.

Affiliate disclosure: these links may earn us a commission if you book, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we write.

Before you book

  • Open the map link for the area and then check the hotel's exact pin. A neighbourhood name can cover a wide area.
  • Check the final rate with tax, payment timing, cancellation terms and what the room includes.
  • If arriving late, confirm the check-in method and the last transport that actually runs.
  • Hotels differ a lot in how much information their websites give. Napalai Hotel's site is in Thai only, The Pannarai Hotel and Phukaning Hotel still show placeholder text, and Thani Resort's home page we read was in Danish. Ask the hotel for current room sizes, breakfast and policies before you book a non-refundable room.
  • Several city hotels also host weddings and meetings, including Centara Udon, Amman Unique Hotel, Hotel MOCO and Phukaning Hotel. On event dates they can be busier or louder, so ask when you book.

FAQ

Where should first-time visitors stay in Udon Thani?

For the city and a first night, start with the centre: Centara Udon says it is steps from Central Plaza and 800 metres from the train station, and The Pannarai Hotel says it is minutes from the mall, hospital, night market and the stations. For a boutique stay beside UD Town, look at Hotel MOCO.

Where should I stay for the Red Lotus Sea?

Bua Daeng Resort, in Chiang Wae, Kumphawapi, says it is 3 km from Ban Diam, where the boat tours leave, and that the airport is 45 minutes or 45 km away. Its own pages give the time from the city as about 40 minutes south and, elsewhere, 45 minutes south-east, so ask for directions.

Is there a hotel near Ban Chiang or Phu Phra Bat?

We found none with an official website we could read, so we list none. Stay in the city and go by car, taxi or tour.

When does the Udon Thani expo run?

The official site gives 1 November 2026 to 14 March 2027 at Nong Dae wetland, Mueang district. An organiser news item dated 14 October 2026 says general tickets are 199 baht and go on sale on 20 October 2026.

How far is the airport from the hotels?

Hotel sites give: Hotel MOCO 10 minutes, Centara Udon a 20-minute drive, Amman Unique Hotel 5 km, Phukaning Hotel 9 km, and Thani Resort 20 to 30 minutes. Wikivoyage puts the airport about 4 km from the city.

Can I check in late?

It depends. VELA Dhi Udon Thani lists check-in from 14:00, Bua Daeng Resort lists check-in from 14:00 until 20:00, and Udon Thai House lists check-in and check-out between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Tell the hotel your arrival time in advance.

Why are some well-known Udon Thani hotels not listed?

We only list hotels whose own website we could open and quote. Some hotels sell through booking sites or Facebook pages, a few sites would not open or did not show readable text, so we left them out rather than guess.

If I booked on a booking site, who cancels?

VELA Dhi Udon Thani's official site says that for third-party reservations, cancellations must be made with the third party. Keep your confirmation from the site where you booked.
