Tak is a large province on Thailand's western border with Myanmar, and where you sleep depends on what you came for. Mae Sot is the border town with the markets, the airport and most of the hotels. Tak city is the provincial capital on the Ping River and a natural overnight stop on the road from Bangkok. Umphang, a long mountain drive south of Mae Sot, is the base for Thi Lo Su waterfall. This page compares those three areas and lists 12 hotels.

Use the quick answer above, then the area table. We show no hotel prices because rates change with dates and room type, and the booking buttons open a search for your own dates. We have not stayed at any of these hotels. Every card shows facts taken from the hotel's own website and checked on 16 October 2026 after a separate verification pass, with the source linked. Facts we could not re-find were removed. Umphang has only one hotel here because most small lodges there have no website we could open, so this is a checked list, not a complete one.

How to choose

  1. Decide whether you are going to Umphang. Wikipedia says Highway 1090 is the only road linking Umphang to the rest of Thailand, 164 km long with 1,219 curves, and that the drive from Mae Sot takes three to four hours. If Thi Lo Su is on your list, plan at least one night in Umphang rather than a day trip from Mae Sot.
  2. Pick Mae Sot for the markets, temples and the border area, and for the airport. Pick Tak city if you are driving or taking a bus between Bangkok and Mae Sot, or if you want a walk along the Ping River. Hotels in Mae Sot list the border market at 5 to 9 km away, so plan on a ride, not a walk.
  3. Check the season and the border. The rainy season runs from May to October in Mae Sot, and one Umphang resort says its road and rafting arrangements change with the season. For Myanmar, we could not verify any current official crossing rules, so check with the immigration checkpoint and your own government's travel advice before you plan anything across the border.

Mae Sot Airport (Nok Air from Don Mueang) or bus from Bangkok

Seven hotels on this list are in Mae Sot. Centra by Centara says it rests by a lake close to the airport, B2 Mae Sot Premier lists a pool and a mall 1.2 km away, Fortune D Hotel is on Asia Road, and Picturebook Guesthouse is a small guesthouse in a garden. Two HOP INN buildings say they are 6 to 7 minutes from the airport. The Rim Moei market is listed at 5 to 9 km from the town hotels, so most visitors will need a ride.

Choose it if: You want the airport, the markets and the widest choice of hotels.

Skip it if: You are heading straight to Umphang and want the shortest drive.

Mistake to avoid: Do not assume the border market is walkable: hotels in town list it at 5 to 9 km away.

Four hotels are in Tak city. HOP INN Tak calls itself a stopover for travellers going from Bangkok to the north, Tak Andaman offers rooms and villas on Phahonyothin Road, SOHO says the city centre is 0.5 km away, and Viang Tak Riverside says the riverside promenade, a suspension bridge and the night market are minutes away. Viang Tak also lists an on-site nightclub, so ask for a quiet room.

Choose it if: You want an overnight stop on the highway or a walk along the Ping River.

Skip it if: You came for the border markets or Thi Lo Su and want to be close to them.

Mistake to avoid: Do not treat Tak city as a base for Umphang: the road from Mae Sot alone is a three to four hour drive.

Long mountain drive from Mae Sot; songthaew from Mae Sot bus station per the resort

Only one Umphang hotel could be verified. Thee Lor Su Riverside says its houses sit beside the Ya Mae stream, there is a camping area, and it sells a two-day, one-night rafting package to Thi Lo Su. Its site gives the drive from Mae Sot as about three to four hours and says the only public transport is a songthaew from Mae Sot bus station between 06:00 and 12:00.

Choose it if: You came for Thi Lo Su and want to book rafting with the place you sleep.

Skip it if: You have only one day, or you dislike long mountain roads.

Mistake to avoid: Do not plan the waterfall around a fixed date: the road and the rafting change with the season, so phone first.

Day trips and planning in Tak province

We have no registered tour listing for Tak province yet, so we show no tour prices. The button opens Klook's own search for Tak, which currently earns us nothing, and the results may be limited. Many Umphang hotels sell their own rafting and waterfall trips, so ask your hotel first.

Disclosure: we are an affiliate partner of travel booking sites, but these links currently open the providers' own sites and earn us nothing yet.

Getting to Mae Sot, Tak and Umphang

Mae Sot has an airport with Nok Air flights from Don Mueang, and buses run from Bangkok, and Umphang is a long mountain drive south of Mae Sot. The button opens the 12Go Bangkok to Mae Sot page, which listed 19 companies and 65 departures a day when we opened it in a browser on 16 October 2026; check the timetable and the operator yourself. Our Tak guide covers Mae Sot, Umphang and Thi Lo Su.

Affiliate disclosure: these links may earn us a commission if you book, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we write.

Before you book

  • Open the map link for the area and then check the hotel's exact pin. A neighbourhood name can cover a wide area.
  • Check the final rate with tax, payment timing, cancellation terms and what the room includes.
  • If arriving late, confirm the check-in method and the last transport that actually runs.
  • Thi Lo Su is inside the Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary. We could not open an official park page to confirm opening months, fees or booking rules, so phone your Umphang hotel or the sanctuary before you plan around a date.
  • Do not rely on the border being open or closed on a given day. Crossing rules in Mae Sot change and we could not verify them, so check with the immigration checkpoint and your own government's travel advice.

FAQ

Where should I stay in Mae Sot?

The hotels we could verify are spread across town and the airport side. B2 Mae Sot Premier lists a pool and Robinson Lifestyle Mae Sot 1.2 km away, Picturebook Guesthouse is a small garden guesthouse, and Centra by Centara is a larger hotel by a lake near the airport. Check each pin on the map for the distance to the markets.

Where should I stay for Thi Lo Su waterfall?

In Umphang. Thee Lor Su Riverside is the only Umphang hotel on this list. Its site says houses sit by the Ya Mae stream, there is a camping area, and it sells a two-day, one-night rafting package to Thi Lo Su. Ask about the current season before you book.

How far is Umphang from Mae Sot?

Wikipedia gives 164 km on Highway 1090 and a drive of three to four hours, with 1,219 curves. Thee Lor Su's site gives the same three to four hours. The resort also says the only public transport is a songthaew from Mae Sot bus station between 06:00 and 12:00, so check times before you go.

Is Tak city worth a night?

It is a practical stop. It sits on the highway between Bangkok and Mae Sot, about 87 km from Mae Sot according to Wikipedia, and HOP INN Tak and Tak Andaman both describe themselves as stopover places. The Viang Tak Riverside site adds a riverside promenade, a suspension bridge and a night market within minutes.

Can I cross into Myanmar from Mae Sot?

We cannot say. Wikipedia says the first Friendship Bridge opened in 1997 and a second bridge for goods opened in 2019, but we could not verify any current official crossing rules, hours or closures. Check with the Mae Sot immigration checkpoint and your own government's travel advice before you plan.

When is the best time to visit?

It depends on what you want. Wikipedia says the monsoon season in Mae Sot runs from May to October with heavy rain. Wikivoyage says some tour routes around Mae Sot cannot be reached at the height of the rainy season, and Thai PBS reported Thi Lo Su reopening on 1 September 2024 after about two months closed. Confirm the current dates with the sanctuary.

Why are there so few hotels in Umphang?

Most small Umphang lodges we found list only a Facebook page or a booking site, or their website did not open. We only list hotels whose own website we could open and verify, so Umphang has one entry. This is a checked list, not a complete one.

How do I get to Mae Sot from Bangkok?

By bus, by air or by minibus. Wikivoyage gives about 7 to 8 hours by bus, and Wikipedia lists Nok Air from Don Mueang at Mae Sot Airport. The 12Go page for Bangkok to Mae Sot listed 19 companies when we opened it in a browser on 16 October 2026; check the timetable and the operator yourself.
