Satun is Thailand's far south-west province on the Andaman Sea, next to the Malaysian border, and most visitors come for the boats from Pak Bara pier to Koh Lipe, Koh Bulon Lae and Tarutao National Park. This page compares four places to sleep on the mainland and the nearer islands: Satun town and Chalung, Pak Bara by the pier, Koh Bulon Lae, and the park-run lodging on Ko Tarutao. Koh Lipe is covered on its own page, so it is not repeated here.

Use the quick answer above, then the area table. We show no hotel prices because rates change with dates and room type, and the booking buttons open a search for your own dates. We have not stayed at any of these places. Every card shows facts taken from the official website and checked on 16 October 2026 after a separate verification pass, with the source linked. Facts we could not re-find on the site were removed. Two other places with their own sites, Best House Resort in Pak Bara and Sinkiat Thani Hotel in Satun town, could not be read by our automatic check, so they are left out; this is a checked list, not a complete one.

How to choose

  1. Start with the boat. Pak Bara is the pier for the islands, and Wikivoyage gives about 59 km from Satun town to Pak Bara. If you have a morning boat, sleeping in Pak Bara saves the early drive. If you want the town, the museum or the caves and Thale Ban, sleep in Satun town and plan the transfer.
  2. Check the season. The Department of National Parks says the Adang-Rawi islands in Tarutao National Park are closed to tourism from 16 May to 15 November. Pansand gives a November to April boat operating time for Koh Bulon Lae, and Bulone Resort says its season runs October to May. Confirm dates and boats before paying.
  3. Plan for basics on the islands. Wikivoyage says Ko Bulon Leh has no ATM, Bulonhill says electricity runs from 6 pm to 6 am, and the Tarutao page gives no room details or fees. Check the final rate with tax, transfers, cancellation terms and what is included.

Two hotels with their own sites are here. The Gleam Resort says it is in the heart of Satun, with 10 separate rooms, a saltwater pool and a restaurant listed as coming soon. Navakiri Boutique Resort gives a Chalung subdistrict address, 26 rooms, a long saltwater pool with a floating bar and mountain views. Wikivoyage lists the Satun National Museum in the Kuden Mansion and the Mambang Mosque in town.

Choose it if: You want to see the town, the museum or the inland caves and Thale Ban, or you need an easy night before a morning boat.

Skip it if: You want a beach outside the door. Satun town is not on the sea.

Mistake to avoid: Do not assume Satun town is next to Pak Bara pier. Wikivoyage gives about 59 km between them, so plan the transfer.

About 124 km from Hat Yai per Wikivoyage; vans and taxis run to the pier

Seesea Resort says it is a beachfront resort about 500 metres from Pak Bara Pier and lists breakfast and a pool. Inn Blog Hotel says it is opposite Pak Bara Beach, 8 minutes by car from the pier, with a free shuttle and a pool with a kids' section. Wikivoyage calls Pak Bara the main transport hub for Ko Lipe, Ko Bulon Le, Ko Adang and Ko Tarutao and notes there is little open in the evening near the pier.

Choose it if: You have a morning boat, or you want a short beach stay before or after the islands.

Skip it if: You want a lively evening scene. Wikivoyage says almost nothing near the pier is open at night.

Mistake to avoid: Do not book a tight same-day connection; boats follow the sea and the season, so keep a buffer night.

Three resorts with their own sites are here. Pansand says its bungalows are all fan rooms and gives a November to April boat operating time. Bulone Resort says it has been family-owned since 1990 and opens its season from October to May. Bulonhill Resort says it is a small garden resort with electricity from 6 pm to 6 am and a breakfast-only restaurant. Wikivoyage says the island has no ATM, so bring enough cash.

Choose it if: You want a quiet island of simple bungalows and are happy with fans, limited power and a long-tail landing.

Skip it if: You want air conditioning everywhere, nightlife or an ATM on the island.

Mistake to avoid: Do not plan a rainy-season trip without asking each resort about opening dates and boats.

The Department of National Parks reservation page for Tarutao lists houses, a camping ground, meeting room and tents in Zone 1 on Ko Tarutao, and houses, tents and a camping ground in Zone 3 at Laem Son on Ko Adang. It lists three tent areas. It gives no room details or fees, so use the DNP booking system or the park office. The page says the Adang-Rawi islands are closed to tourism from 16 May to 15 November.

Choose it if: You want simple park-run lodging or a tent, and you accept limited facilities.

Skip it if: You want resort comforts, restaurants and a pool. For island resorts look at Koh Lipe and Koh Bulon Lae.

Mistake to avoid: Do not treat the page as a booking quote. It lists the lodging types but no prices or availability.

Day trips and planning in Satun

We have no registered tour listing for Satun yet, so we show no tour prices. The button opens Klook's own search, which currently earns us nothing. Many island resorts and Pak Bara operators sell their own boat and snorkelling trips, so ask first.

Disclosure: we are an affiliate partner of travel booking sites, but these links currently open the providers' own sites and earn us nothing yet.

Getting to Satun

Satun is far from Bangkok. The button opens the 12Go Bangkok to Satun page, which on 16 October 2026 showed bus and taxi options for a Sunday search; check the arrival point carefully, because a ticket to Satun town is not a ticket to Pak Bara pier. Our Satun guide covers Hat Yai, Trang and the pier.

Affiliate disclosure: these links may earn us a commission if you book, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we write.

Before you book

  • Open the map link for the area and then check the hotel's exact pin. A neighbourhood name can cover a wide area.
  • Check the final rate with tax, payment timing, cancellation terms and what the room includes.
  • If arriving late, confirm the check-in method and the last transport that actually runs.
  • Boats follow the sea. If your flight or onward bus is fixed, keep a spare night, because speedboats can be cancelled in rough weather.
  • Bring cash for the islands. Wikivoyage says Ko Bulon Leh has no ATM, and the longtail landing may be paid separately from the boat ticket.

FAQ

Where should I stay in Satun?

For the islands, stay in Pak Bara near the pier. For the town, museum and inland sights, stay in Satun town or Chalung. For quiet bungalows, look at Koh Bulon Lae. For park-run houses or a tent, see Ko Tarutao. The cards below show what each place says on its own site.

Is Pak Bara a good place to stay?

It is practical rather than lively. Seesea Resort says it is about 500 m from the pier and Inn Blog Hotel says it is opposite Pak Bara Beach with a free shuttle to the pier. Wikivoyage says there is little open in the evening near the pier.

How far is Satun town from Pak Bara pier?

Wikivoyage gives 59 km from Pak Bara to Satun, 123 km to Trang and 124 km to Hat Yai. Plan a van, taxi or songthaew; times and fares change, so ask the hotel.

Can I stay on Ko Tarutao?

The DNP reservation page lists houses, a camping ground, meeting room and tents in Zone 1 on Ko Tarutao, and three tent areas overall. It gives no prices or availability. Wikivoyage (2024) says lodging cannot be booked online and you must phone the park, so the sources disagree; call the Tarutao park office on the numbers the DNP page lists, 0 7478 3485 or 0 7478 3597.

Is Koh Bulon Lae open all year?

Not necessarily. Bulone Resort says its season is October to May and Pansand gives a November to April boat operating time. Ask each resort for dates before you book.

Does Koh Bulon Lae have an ATM?

Wikivoyage says the island has no ATM, so bring enough cash. Resorts also list separate longtail landing fees; Pansand says the ticket price does not include the longtail service.

Where are the Koh Lipe hotels?

Koh Lipe has its own page: see the Koh Lipe where-to-stay guide. This page covers the mainland and the nearer islands only.

Why are Best House Resort and Sinkiat Thani Hotel missing?

Both have their own sites, but our automatic check could not read their text (access refused for one, and a page that needs JavaScript for the other), so we did not use them. This is a checked list, not a complete one.
