Wuzhizhou Island (蜈支洲岛) is a small island off Haitang Bay, north of Sanya, where visitors come to walk, swim and try water sports. The official ticket page, which we read on 17 October 2026, sells an island entry plus return boat ticket for adults at CNY 144 ("from" price) and a half-price ticket at CNY 72. The island is open 08:30 to 19:30, but the last boat out leaves at 16:00, so you go in the morning. Read the Sanya guide for the whole city.

Who qualifies for the discounts, and who is refused

Almost every discount on the official page is tied to Chinese documents, and the buyer is checked at the ticket window. Half price is for minors aged 7 to 18, people aged 60 to 69, and students "with their own ID card" or a valid student card, and the buyer must show proof at the ticket window. We did not find any line about foreign passports on the page. If you are a student or a senior from abroad, ask at the ticket window or call the island's hotline, 400-114-6666 (the page gives 08:00 to 17:30), before you count on a discount. Children's free entry is by height (1.2 m) or age (6), which a passport can show.

The page says the following are not accepted on the boat to the island: people aged 70 or over, pregnant women, people with mobility or intellectual impairments, people who are drunk or in an abnormal mental state, and others unfit to go, for example people with heart disease or high blood pressure. Disabled visitors who are not mobility-impaired need at least one companion. Some round-island routes are closed to walking and are for the electric cart only. The swimming beach is open water, and its hours depend on that day's weather and sea. Only small family-raised cats and dogs are allowed, with a rabies vaccination certificate and registration at the visitor centre. Refunds must be requested by the day of the visit at the latest.

What is on the island

The official English introduction describes the island as a national 5A scenic area shaped like a butterfly, 1,500 m east to west and 1,100 m north to south, 1.48 sq km in area, with a 5.7 km coastline and a highest point of 79.9 m in the south. The Chinese home page promotes the Lovers' Bridge, a lovers' pavilion, a sunrise viewpoint, a ring road and a bathing beach.

The official site sells many paid activities, including diving, speedboats and parasailing. Prices depend on the product and the day, and we have not tried any, so we do not recommend a provider. The ticket page says some packages do not include the island entry ticket, so read the description before you buy.

Wikivoyage's Sanya page describes the waters here as among the most beautiful around Sanya, but says clarity and fish numbers have dropped and that it is mass tourism (not official, an editor's opinion). It advises choosing the date and time for good visibility.

Getting there

The official pages we could open do not give bus details for the wharf, so we give no official route. The English page puts the island in Haitang Bay, north of Sanya. Travel China Guide, which is undated, says to take bus 28 or the Haitang Bay 1 bus from downtown to the Wuzhizhou wharf, or a taxi, and then a boat of about 15 minutes. Wikivoyage also names bus 28 from the city, and Haitang Bus 3 or Haiyang Bay Bus 1 from Haitang Bay (both not official). For the airport to Haitang Bay see the Sanya guide. If you stay in Haitang Bay, Fairmont and Sofitel Leeman are described on their own pages as across from or near the island; see where to stay in Sanya.

When to go

The last boat to the island leaves at 16:00, so aim to reach the wharf in the morning and leave time for the return boat. The China Meteorological Administration says tropical cyclones matter most from June to November, and boat and swimming times follow the sea. Do not book a flight home on the same day. These are our suggestions, not official advice.

The ticket search button opens a provider's search page. As of 17 October 2026 we have no registered affiliate link for Wuzhizhou tickets and earn nothing from them yet. We have not compared prices, so check the conditions against the official ticket page. Our disclosure page explains how affiliate links work and what we never do.

How this compares

We read Travel China Guide's Wuzhizhou page and Wikivoyage's Sanya page. Travel China Guide gives a seasonal fee and times that do not match the official ticket page, and the page is undated. Wikivoyage's CNY 133 is older. This page shows the official fees and hours with the date we read them, lists the discounts with the documents they need, lists the groups the island refuses, and shows where the other sources differ.
