For most visitors the best Beijing hotel is the one next to a subway station, because the sights are spread across the whole city. If your trip is built around the Forbidden City and old lanes, our conclusion from the hotel websites we read on 16 October 2026 is to look at Qianmen and Dashilan, Gulou, or Xidan. Sanlitun and the CBD in Chaoyang suit people who want restaurants and a wider range of hotels but do not mind riding the subway into the centre. This page compares the areas and lists 9 hotels checked against their own sites. It has no room prices and no review scores, and we have not stayed at any of them.

Entry rules and payments are on the China hub. The city overview is the Beijing travel guide, and the attraction pages are the Forbidden City, Mutianyu Great Wall and Summer Palace.

District names and character come from Wikivoyage. Subway and location facts come from each hotel's own page.

We have no checked hotel on Wangfujing street. The page for the hotel we tried (Novotel Beijing Peace) said that it no longer exists, and Fairmont Beijing announced a renovation closure from 16 September 2026 with no reopening date. We therefore recommend no hotel specifically for Wangfujing; if you stay there, check the walking route from the hotel to the subway yourself.

From the airport to your area

Capital Airport figures come from the airport's own site (re-checked on 17 October 2026). We could not open Daxing (PKX)'s official site, so see the Beijing guide for what we could confirm there.

Wikivoyage quotes about 25 minutes for the Airport Express to the city, which is not an official figure. The airport site lists times at each stop but we did not find a single total journey time there.

Walking and transit as the hotels write it

This table uses only distances and times the hotel websites themselves state, checked on 16 October 2026. A dash means the site says nothing, not that the hotel is near or far. We read the English pages of each site.

Checked hotels

The cards below show facts checked twice against each hotel's own website on 16 October 2026, with the standout facts and cautions. There are no room rates or review scores, and we have not stayed at any of these hotels. Eight of the nine hotels belong to Accor, whose site we could read automatically. Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt and IHG block automated reading, so those chains are not in the list.

Hand-picked places to stay

Examples of established Beijing hotels, spread across areas and budget bands. Every fact below was checked against the hotel's own website or a reputable source on 2026-10-16 and links to that source. We have not stayed at these places and give no ratings; we show no prices because rates change daily. The band is the property class (hostel or guesthouse, mid-range, upscale), not a live price.

What to check before you book

  • Open the map pin and check the walk from the subway station you will actually use. Some hotel sites give no station or walking time (ibis Tuanjie Lake and Rosewood).
  • Two hotel sites are inconsistent about subway lines on the same page (Mercure Downtown and Swissotel). Check lines and stations on a map.
  • The hotel sites we read do not explain check-in rules or the documents guests must show, and we did not check this. Ask the hotel before you travel. The NIA says hotels register foreign guests with the police, so expect to show your passport.
  • Some subway ticket machines do not work with passports, so use a service window, per Wikivoyage.
  • Payments, SIMs and blocked apps are on the China hub.
  • If you want to visit the Forbidden City, book the ticket before the hotel: tickets open only 7 days ahead and the museum is closed on Mondays. See the Forbidden City page.

Frequently asked questions

Which area is best for a first visit to Beijing?

For the Forbidden City and old lanes, Qianmen, Gulou or Xidan next to a subway line, per our reading of the hotel sites. For restaurants and more hotel choice, Sanlitun and the CBD.

How do I get from Capital Airport to my hotel?

The Airport Express costs CNY 25 for 5 stops and connects to the subway, per the airport site. Airport buses go to Beijing West and South stations for CNY 25 to 30. Or take a taxi.

Are there hotels near Wangfujing?

Yes, but this page does not recommend one, because we do not yet have a hotel there that passed checks against its own website.

How much does a hotel in Beijing cost?

We show no prices because they change by date and room type. Add your dates in the booking box and compare.

How were the hotels checked?

We read each hotel's own site twice. The first pass collected statements with the original sentence; the second pass reopened the page and verified that the sentence was there. Anything that failed was removed. There are no prices or review scores.

When was this checked?

On 16 October 2026 against the hotels' sites; airport figures were re-checked on 17 October. Some sites could not be read automatically (Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, IHG, the Beijing subway site and Daxing Airport's site), so we cite no numbers from them.

How this guide compares

We read China Highlights' and Travel China Guide's Beijing pages as English benchmarks. China Highlights offers itineraries and tour packages, and Travel China Guide has fact pages, but we did not find hotel-by-area comparisons built from the hotels' own sites. This page compares areas with the walking times the hotels write themselves, removes what a hotel does not say, and tells you which chains we could not read.

The buttons in the booking box open the providers' hotel search pages for Beijing. As of 17 October 2026 we have no registered affiliate link for Beijing and earn nothing from them yet, and we do not compare prices. The "Official site" link on each hotel card opens the hotel's own website directly.
