Sanya sits at the southern tip of Hainan island and is China's beach resort city: long bays, five-star resorts, small islands and what Wikivoyage calls China's largest duty-free mall, all within about an hour of each other. For visitors from many countries it is also the easiest part of China to enter, because Hainan runs its own 30-day visa-free route. This page covers who qualifies, how the bays differ, how to reach them, and when to go. Where we could not confirm a fact from an official source, such as nonstop flights from your home country, we say so. We checked the facts on 16 and 17 October 2026.

Can you enter Hainan visa-free?

The National Immigration Administration (NIA) page "Regional Visa-Free Entry Policies for Foreign Nationals", dated 20 August 2026, says that holders of ordinary passports from 61 countries may enter and stay within Hainan Province for up to 30 days without a visa. The purposes it lists include tourism, business, visits, family visits, medical treatment, conferences and exhibitions, and sports competitions. It does not apply to people entering to work or study. The entry and exit ports are all open ports in Hainan, and the stay is counted from 00:00 on the day after you enter.

The 61 countries named by the NIA are: Albania, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Brunei, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Monaco, Montenegro, the Netherlands, New Zealand, North Macedonia, Norway, the Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, South Korea, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Ukraine, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, the United States and Vietnam.

How it compares with the national rules on our China entry page:

QuestionAnswer, from the NIA pages
Where can I go?The Hainan route covers Hainan Province only. The national 30-day list lets you travel across China.
Are there countries on the Hainan list but not the national 30-day list?Yes, 19 by our comparison of the two NIA lists: Albania, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Czech Republic, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, Malaysia, Mexico, the Philippines, Qatar, Serbia, Singapore, Thailand, Ukraine, the United Arab Emirates, the United States and Vietnam.
Is anyone on the national list but not the Hainan list?Yes, by the same comparison: Andorra, Bahrain, Kuwait, Liechtenstein, Oman, Peru, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay. They can use the national route, which covers Hainan too.
What if both apply to me?The NIA says that where a bilateral agreement or the national unilateral policy applies, those regulations prevail.
Is it group-only?The NIA text names no group requirement for the 30-day Hainan route. Separate Hainan routes for tourist groups from Hong Kong and Macao (6 days) and cruise groups exist; those are group routes.

For US citizens this is the practical point: the United States is not on the national 30-day list, but it is on the Hainan list, so a US passport holder can fly to Hainan and stay in Hainan for up to 30 days without a visa. If you are not on either list, you need a visa before you travel. The policy has changed several times, and Wikivoyage's Sanya page still describes an older version with agency reporting before arrival (its link to the operating guide is dead), so check the NIA page in the week you buy your flight and confirm with your airline what documents it wants to see at check-in.

Arrival cards, payments, mobile internet and trains are the same as everywhere on the mainland; read them on the China entry page.

We checked 12 hotels against their own sites; see where to stay in Sanya.

What to see

Yalong Bay is the resort district. Several hotels on Accor's site place themselves in the Yalong Bay National Resort District near the La Floret village. Wikivoyage says the beach is well kept by the hotels and that the water at Yalong Bay is clean enough for a good swim, and calls Sanya Bay beach rather polluted (not official).

Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone has the Tang-style Nanshan Temple and the 108 m statue of Guanyin standing on a platform in the sea. The official ticket notice sells tickets 08:00 to 17:00 and splits the year into high and low season, but it shows no full adult price. See the Nanshan page.

Wuzhizhou Island is a small island in Haitang Bay. The official ticket page lists a combined island and return boat ticket for adults at CNY 144, and the last boat out leaves at 16:00. See the Wuzhizhou page.

Haitang Bay duty-free mall is at 118 Haitang North Road, open 10:00 to 22:00 per the operator's site, with 120,000 sq m of floor area. The rules for foreigners are in the duty-free guide.

Tianya Haijiao is a rocky beach with large boulders that Wikivoyage describes as a popular couples' photo spot, about 30 minutes from the city by bus. We did not check an official ticket price or hours, so we give none.

Atlantis Sanya is a resort with the Aquaventure water park and the Lost Chambers aquarium at Haitang Bay, per Wikivoyage. We could not open its official site, so we give no price or opening hours, and it is not in our checked hotel list. Confirm on the resort's own site or app.

Dadonghai and the Coconut Dream Corridor. Dadonghai is the city beach, with seafood restaurants along the sand. Wikivoyage warns that parts of the beach are closed and that swimming is banned near and after dark (not official). The Coconut Dream Corridor is the palm-lined shoreline road along Sanya Bay; China Highlights says it runs about 20 km.

Getting to Sanya

We did not confirm a nonstop flight from any specific foreign city to Sanya Phoenix International Airport (SYX) on an airline or airport site. The airport's website and several airline timetables did not load or did not show readable schedules for us, so check your own departure city with the airline. What the sources say:

  • Wikivoyage says SYX is about 14 km from the city centre, is a hub for China Eastern, China Southern and Hainan Airlines, and has flights from most major Chinese cities including Guangzhou, Shanghai and Hong Kong. The airport has its own high-speed rail station.
  • A common alternative is to fly into Haikou and take the high-speed train south. Wikivoyage gives 1.5 to 2 hours from Haikou. Look up timetables and prices on 12306, as described on the China entry page.
  • The Hainan visa-free route lets you use any open port in Hainan, so connecting in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Shanghai or Hong Kong and flying on is possible. Ask your airline what it needs to see at check-in for your passport.

When to go, and typhoons

The China Meteorological Administration describes Sanya's climate: an annual mean temperature of 25.5 C, 21.1 C in the coolest month (January) and 28.6 C in the warmest (June). Average rainfall is 1,248 mm a year, and 90 percent of it falls from May to October. Tropical cyclones affect Sanya most from June to November, on 4.3 days a year on average and as many as 14 days in the worst month on record.

Our reading, not official: November to April is the drier half, and May to October is the rainy and storm half. Wikivoyage says the peak season runs from 1 October until after the Spring Festival, with winter popular among Russian and northern Chinese visitors, and that around Chinese New Year hotels and roads are packed and prices extremely high (not official). The Nanshan zone sets its own high season at 1 October to 30 April. Check the forecast before you fly, and buy insurance that covers delayed flights.

Money rules that are specific to Hainan

Hainan's duty-free scheme lets a foreign visitor buy up to CNY 100,000 a year, but the goods are collected when you leave the island, not on the shop floor. Gold and silver products are excluded for people who leave the country. Full details, with the quantity table from the official annex, are on our duty-free page. A Xinhua report of 18 December 2025 says island-wide special customs operations began; it does not mention tourists, so we do not claim that visitor rules changed.

A suggested 5 days

This is our suggestion, not official advice. Day 1: settle into your bay and walk the beach. Day 2: Wuzhizhou Island in the morning. Day 3: the duty-free mall, if you are staying in Haitang Bay. Day 4: Nanshan for the whole day. Day 5: a reserve day for rain or storms, and for collecting duty-free goods at the airport. Do not book a very early flight home if you have goods to collect.

Where to stay

We checked 12 hotels against their own websites and chains, spread over Yalong Bay, Haitang Bay, Dadonghai, Luhuitou, Sanya Bay and the airport. The cards and an area table are on where to stay in Sanya.

Continue elsewhere in China

Sanya is easy to combine with another city by flight. Our English guides cover Guangzhou and Shenzhen, Guilin and Yangshuo and Beijing. Check each city's entry rules separately: the Hainan route covers Hainan only.

How this compares

We opened China Highlights' Sanya guide, Travel China Guide's Sanya page and Lonely Planet's Sanya page. China Highlights compares seven bays well and says Sanya has a "relaxed visa-free policy", but the text we read gave no fee, no duty-free rules and no NIA list. Travel China Guide has attraction pages with fees but they are undated and disagree with the official ticket pages: for example it gives Wuzhizhou as CNY 144 in May to September and CNY 136 in October to April, where the official page shows CNY 144 from, with no seasonal split. Lonely Planet is a destination hub. Here you get the NIA's Hainan list with the countries that differ from the national list, the duty-free quantity table from the official annex, official fees with their check dates, and a clear label on every figure we could not confirm.

The search buttons open the providers' own search pages. As of 17 October 2026 we have no registered affiliate link for Sanya hotels and earn nothing from them yet. We have not compared prices. Our disclosure page explains how affiliate links work and what we never do.

Hand-picked places to stay

Examples of established Sanya hotels, spread across areas and budget bands. Every fact below was checked against the hotel's own website or a reputable source on 2026-10-16 and links to that source. We have not stayed at these places and give no ratings; we show no prices because rates change daily. The band is the property class (hostel or guesthouse, mid-range, upscale), not a live price.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa to visit Sanya?

It depends on your passport. Passports from the 61 countries on the NIA's Hainan list can stay in Hainan for up to 30 days without a visa, including the US, UK and most of Europe. If you are on the national 30-day list you can use that. Otherwise you need a visa first. Check the NIA page.

Can US citizens visit Sanya without a visa?

Yes, within Hainan. The United States is on the NIA's Hainan list, so a US passport holder entering through a Hainan port can stay in Hainan up to 30 days. The US is not on the national 30-day list, so this does not cover other provinces.

Are there direct flights to Sanya from my country?

We could not confirm nonstop flights from foreign cities from airline or airport sites. Check with your airline for your exact dates. Connecting through Guangzhou, Shanghai, Hong Kong or another large hub, or flying into Haikou and taking the train, are the routes Wikivoyage describes.

When is the best time to visit Sanya?

The China Meteorological Administration puts 90 percent of the rain in May to October and says storms matter most from June to November. November to April is drier, but it is also the busier and pricier season, according to Wikivoyage.

How much duty-free shopping can I do?

CNY 100,000 per person per year, with a quantity limit for each category in the official annex. See the duty-free page.

Which bay should I stay in?

Yalong Bay for resorts and a beach village, Haitang Bay for duty free and Wuzhizhou, Dadonghai or Sanya Bay for the city. The comparison table is on the where-to-stay page.

How much is Atlantis Sanya?

We could not open the resort's official site, so we give no price. Check on its own site or app.
