Chongqing is a hill city built on layers, between the Yangtze and Jialing rivers. Come for three things: cliffside buildings lit orange at night, a monorail that runs straight through an apartment block, and a cable car across the Yangtze. Check which entry rule covers your passport on the China hub first, and for payments, blocked apps and rail booking. What we could not check against the official operator, for example metro fares and direct flights, we say plainly under each heading. Facts here come from sources opened on 16 and 17 October 2026. We did not visit Chongqing for this page.

Who Chongqing suits

It suits people who like a big city that looks like nowhere else, night photography, spicy hot pot and climbing stairs. Wikivoyage warns that the city is very hilly: the ground floor of one building can sit at the 20th-floor level of the one next to it, so it is easy to get lost and more tiring than you expect. With older travellers or small children, pick a hotel near a metro station and plan fewer stops a day.

The city in words

  • The Yuzhong peninsula is the core, between the Jialing river to the north and the Yangtze to the south. It has Jiefangbei, Hongya Cave on the Jialing bank, Chaotianmen at the point where the rivers meet and the north cableway station.
  • Across the Yangtze in Nan'an is the south cableway station (the Longmenhao area).
  • Across the Jialing to the north is Liangjiang New Area (Wikivoyage says it was formed by merging Jiangbei and Yubei in 2025), with Guanyinqiao, Chongqing North railway station and the airport.
  • To the west, Shapingba district holds Ciqikou, per Wikipedia.

The main sights

Hongya Cave. Wikipedia describes an 11-storey stilted-house complex built into the cliff on the south bank of the Jialing in the Jiefangbei area, with shops and hotels. The fourth floor is a food market, and the top floor has a river viewpoint. Its look is often compared to the buildings in the Japanese film Spirited Away. We write about hours, booking and the differing sources on the Hongya Cave page.

Jiefangbei. The central business district, with a pedestrian street, big malls and towers around a monument. Wikipedia calls it a pedestrian street with thousands of shops and restaurants. It suits an evening walk.

Liziba station. An elevated monorail station on Line 2 in Yuzhong, opened on 18 June 2005, per Wikipedia. The famous picture is a train passing through a residential building. China Highlights warns that reaching the viewing area from the platform means six floors of stairs and that the lift can take 15 to 20 minutes in crowds, and suggests a taxi to the platform below. That is the writer's account, not an official one. We did not check the viewpoint's rules, so read the signs at the site.

Yangtze River Cableway. The operator says it is 1,166 m long, opened on 24 October 1987 and is a municipal protected site. Hours are 08:00 to 22:00 from March to November. See the cableway page for tickets and queues.

Ciqikou. An old riverside district in Shapingba on the Jialing. Wikipedia lists a metro station called Ciqikou, and Wikivoyage says Line 1 is convenient. We did not check hours, fees or shops there.

Day trip to Wulong

The Chongqing municipal government's English site says Wulong is about 129 km from the city centre and part of the South China Karst, and the Three Natural Bridges area was rated a 5A tourist attraction on 6 July 2011. The main areas are the Three Natural Bridges, Fairy Mountain and Furong Cave. Our Wulong page shows the fees and hours the sources disagree on. We have not confirmed a train or bus timetable from Chongqing, so check 12306 and the operator.

Getting to Chongqing

We could not open the airport's or an airline's timetable, because those sites load data with scripts. Travel China Guide, a travel site and not an official source, says Chongqing Jiangbei airport has direct international flights to 34 destinations including Seattle, London, Paris, Rome, Madrid, Singapore, Jakarta and Bangkok. One flight aggregator we saw lists nonstop Bangkok Don Mueang to Chongqing; aggregators disagree on airlines and frequency. Treat all of this as unconfirmed and check the airline site for your date.

By rail, Wikivoyage says the high-speed train between Chongqing North and Chengdu takes about an hour and a half. We did not read a 12306 timetable or fare. The Chengdu travel guide covers the other end. The Chongqing government site also says Chongqing East railway station opened on 27 June 2025, one of the city's four main stations. For entry rules, see the China hub, and for the capital, the Beijing travel guide.

From Jiangbei airport (CKG) into town

Wikivoyage puts the airport about 21 km north-east of the centre. T2 serves some domestic airlines, T3 domestic and international airlines. Metro Line 10 stops at the T3 transport hub and Line 3 connects to the city. A free shuttle between T3 and T2 takes about 15 minutes.

First and last train times disagree between sources, so do not plan around them. If you land late, check the timetable on the station boards or in a metro app, and keep a taxi or hotel car as a back-up.

Metro and moving between sights

Wikivoyage recommends the metro and buses. Line 1 is handy for Ciqikou, Jiefangbei and Chaotianmen. Line 2 is the monorail that passes Liziba. Line 3 runs north-south via Chongqing North station and Guanyinqiao to the airport. The cableway operator says its north station is reached by Line 1 or Line 6 to Xiaoshizi, exit 5, about 30 m, and the south station by Line 6 to Shangxinjie, exit 2. Wikivoyage's tip: keep your card or ticket for the exit gate, and if you ride past your stop go to the service counter.

Climate and seasons

Wikivoyage says Chongqing is humid all year, cold from December to February, hot from June to September, and has heavy air pollution especially from October to March. Its monthly averages:

MonthHigh/low (C)Rain (mm)
Jan10/621
Feb14/822
Mar19/1256
Apr24/16103
May27/19143

Jul34/25174
Aug34/25126
Sep29/22125
Oct22/1795
Nov17/1350
Dec12/825

From this table, our reading is that April and October to November are cooler without being cold, and July and August are hottest. Travel China Guide and China Highlights both give spring and autumn as the best seasons, and China Highlights says summer can reach 40 C. Wikivoyage warns that taxis are hard to find on very hot days. We found no official source on fog, so we do not say which months are foggy.

How many days

Our suggestion, not an official figure: 3 full days for the city. Day 1 Jiefangbei and Hongya Cave in the evening, day 2 the cableway and Liziba, day 3 Ciqikou or a rest. Add a day for Wulong. Do not try to fit everything into one day, because of the hills.

Where to stay

We checked 8 hotels against their own sites, spread across Jiefangbei, Hongya Cave, Guanyinqiao, Chongqing North station and Jiulongpo, with a district table. See where to stay in Chongqing. We have not checked a hotel in Shapingba, so we name none.

Hand-picked places to stay

Examples of established Chongqing hotels, spread across areas and budget bands. Every fact below was checked against the hotel's own website or a reputable source on 2026-10-16 and links to that source. We have not stayed at these places and give no ratings; we show no prices because rates change daily. The band is the property class (hostel or guesthouse, mid-range, upscale), not a live price.

Frequently asked questions

Are there direct flights to Chongqing?

Travel China Guide lists direct international routes from Chongqing Jiangbei airport, including Bangkok, London, Paris, Seattle and Singapore. We did not confirm any of them with an airline or the airport. Check an airline site for your date.

How do I get from CKG airport to the city?

Metro Line 3 or Line 10 (sources disagree on which serves which terminal), or a taxi at roughly CNY 40 to 80 per Wikivoyage. Check fares and times at the station.

When should I go?

April, and October to November, are the milder months by Wikivoyage's table. July and August are the hottest. Wikivoyage warns about heavy air pollution from October to March.

How many days do I need?

We suggest 3 days in the city and 1 more for Wulong.

How much is the cableway?

The operator's site we could open shows no price. A local site (Bendibao, updated 28 September 2026) gives CNY 30 one way and CNY 50 return, but that is not official. See the cableway page.

Do I pay to see Hongya Cave?

Most sources we read say the outside is free, but some say you must book ahead, and hours differ. See the Hongya Cave page.

How this guide compares

We opened China Highlights' Chongqing guide and Travel China Guide's Chongqing guide. Lonely Planet's Chongqing address sent us to its China hub, so there was no city page to compare. China Highlights is a first-person, practical guide with queue and stair warnings, and Travel China Guide covers history, flights and seasons. Neither, in the text we read, gives the cableway operator's hours with a check date, the monthly climate table with a source, or a clear list of where sources disagree. This page does, and labels everything we could not check, such as fares and direct flights.

The hotel search buttons open the providers' search pages for Chongqing. As of 17 October 2026 we have no registered affiliate link for Chongqing and earn nothing from them yet, and we do not compare prices. Our disclosure page explains how affiliate links work.
