Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan province, known for giant pandas, hot pot and numbing-spicy cooking, tea houses and a few old lanes in the middle of a very large modern city. The rules that matter before you go are simple: the Panda Base needs a named ticket booked up to 14 days ahead, the city has two airports far apart from each other, and Jiuzhaigou is not a day trip. Everything below comes from official sites we opened on 16 and 17 October 2026, plus Wikivoyage (labelled as unofficial). We did not visit Chengdu for this page, and we have not invented any prices or reviews.

This is a city overview, not a day-by-day itinerary. Entry rules, payments and blocked apps are on the China hub. Hotels by district are on where to stay in Chengdu. If you are also planning the capital, see the Beijing travel guide.

Who Chengdu suits

  • Panda watchers. The Panda Base is inside the city, on metro Line 3 plus a shuttle, per the base's own site. See the Panda Base page.
  • Walkers and eaters. Kuanzhai (Wide and Narrow) Alleys, Jinli Street, Wenshu Monastery and People's Park are all in the same city (locations per Wikivoyage).
  • Nature add-ons. Leshan Giant Buddha works as a day trip, and Jiuzhaigou needs 2 to 3 days. See below.
  • Not ideal if you want blue skies: Wikivoyage describes Chengdu as overcast for much of the year. English is also less common here than in other big Chinese cities, so download offline maps and a translation app at home.

The districts in plain words

This table is our own grouping, based on locations on the official sites and Wikivoyage.

Sichuan opera and face-changing

Wikivoyage says Sichuan opera shows run about an hour and a half and include face-changing, fire-spitting and acrobatics, with tickets roughly CNY 100 to 300 depending on the show (unofficial and undated). Many tea houses stage shows nightly. Book through your hotel or the venue for your date. We did not check any theatre's schedule or prices.

What to eat

Wikivoyage covers hot pot, skewers in broth (chuan chuan xiang), Chen Mapo's mapo tofu, dan dan noodles and street snacks. Its prices are old and we did not check them, so we show none. Travel China Guide names Chengdu as the first Asian UNESCO City of Gastronomy. If you do not eat chilli, tell the restaurant your spice level before ordering (a general tip of ours). We recommend no specific restaurant, because we have not tried them and have no official source.

Getting to Chengdu

Chengdu has two airports, Shuangliu (CTU) and Tianfu (TFU). Shuangliu's site carries a notice on travelling between the two (30 March 2024) and a night bus linking them, so always check which airport is on your ticket.

For flights, Travel China Guide says the main airport has direct routes from Los Angeles, London, Frankfurt, Rome, Paris, Tokyo and Seoul. We could not open an airline timetable for a specific route, so we cannot confirm which cities have direct flights. If your city has none, a connection in another Chinese hub is the usual route; we did not check specific connections.

The airport site also lists metro Lines 19 and 30 and intercity trains through the airport station. We could not open Chengdu's metro operator site, so we show no Line 10 fare.

Chengdu to Chongqing and beyond

The Chengdu to Chongqing high-speed line is the usual pairing. We have not read a timetable or fare from 12306, so we show neither. Wikivoyage lists a bus from Wuguiqiao station to Chongqing taking 4 hours for CNY 112 (unofficial). Check the train on 12306 or your ticket app on the day. Our Chongqing travel guide covers the other end.

How many days

  • 3 days: a Panda Base day, an old-town day, and a flexible day.
  • 4 days: add Leshan.
  • 5 to 6 days: add Jiuzhaigou, which needs 2 to 3 days of its own.

These are our suggestions, not official figures. Travel China Guide suggests 2 to 4 days for most visitors.

Hand-picked places to stay

Examples of established Chengdu hotels, spread across areas and budget bands. Every fact below was checked against the hotel's own website or a reputable source on 2026-10-16 and links to that source. We have not stayed at these places and give no ratings; we show no prices because rates change daily. The band is the property class (hostel or guesthouse, mid-range, upscale), not a live price.

Frequently asked questions

Are there direct flights to Chengdu from my country?

We cannot say for your city. Travel China Guide lists direct routes from Los Angeles, London, Frankfurt, Rome, Paris, Tokyo and Seoul. Check an airline timetable and note whether the flight lands at Shuangliu or Tianfu.

How do I get from Shuangliu airport to the city?

Metro Line 10 from T1 or T2, per the airport site, or the Night 1 bus to Chunxi Road for CNY 2 between 21:00 and 04:30.

How far is Tianfu airport from the Panda Base?

The Panda Base's site quotes about CNY 200 and 60 to 70 minutes by taxi. From Shuangliu it quotes about CNY 100 and 40 to 50 minutes.

Do I have to book Panda Base tickets ahead?

Yes. Adult and student tickets are named and booked online up to 14 days ahead. See the Panda Base page.

Can I visit Jiuzhaigou as a day trip?

We do not think so. The fastest train is 1 h 39 min to the station and about 2 more hours to the park, and you cannot sleep inside the valley. We suggest 2 to 3 days. See the Jiuzhaigou page.

When is the best time to visit Chengdu?

Travel China Guide says March to May and September to November are mild with less rain. July and August are the hottest months. Wikivoyage describes winter as not extremely cold but damp.

How were these facts checked?

On 16 October 2026 we opened the Panda Base, Shuangliu Airport, Jiuzhaigou and Leshan notices, plus Wikivoyage. On 17 October 2026 we re-opened the Panda Base ticket, hours and transport pages, the Jiuzhaigou ticket and arrival pages, and the airport Line 10 page. We could not re-open the Leshan official domain directly and read an archive copy.

How this guide compares

We opened China Highlights' Chengdu Travel Guide 2026 and Travel China Guide's Chengdu city guide as English benchmarks. Lonely Planet's Chengdu address sent us to its China hub, so we could not compare a city page. Both benchmarks are broad and readable, and China Highlights adds personal tips and tour links. Neither gives the Panda Base's booking window and daily cap, Line 10 boarding points and first and last trains, or the Jiuzhaigou fee table from the official sites with a check date. This page does, and labels anything we could not verify.

The hotel and tour search buttons on this page open the providers' own search pages. As of 17 October 2026 we have no registered affiliate link for Chengdu and earn nothing from them yet. When that changes the box will say so. Our disclosure page explains how affiliate links work.
