Guangzhou and Shenzhen are two big cities whose districts sit ten or more kilometres apart, so choose a base from your first and last day. If you are going to the Canton Fair, look at the Pazhou side. If you cross from Hong Kong on the metro, Luohu sits at the border. If you want a night by the bay close to the Shenzhen Bay crossing, look at Nanshan. This page compares the areas and lists 12 hotels whose details we checked twice against each hotel's own website, on 16 and 17 October 2026.
For the cities and the border crossings, read the Guangzhou and Shenzhen guide. Fair dates and the badge process are on the Canton Fair page. Entry rules and payments for the whole country are on the China hub.

Areas compared
The grouping into areas is ours. Times and distances are what each hotel's site writes; where a site gives none, we say so.
| Area | Best for | Watch out for | Transport, from the sources | Hotels checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Guangzhou: Tianhe and Zhujiang New Town | First night, business district, malls and restaurants | Prices rise during the fair (Wikivoyage) | Sofitel writes about 10 minutes on foot to the Tianhe Sports Center and Tiyu Xilu station (Line 3), about 20 minutes by car to the Pazhou convention centre and about 40 minutes to Baiyun airport. Mercure is 2 km from Guangzhou East station | Sofitel Guangzhou Sunrich, Mercure Tianhe Sports Center, The Ritz-Carlton Guangzhou |
| Guangzhou: Pazhou, near the Canton Fair | Fair visitors on a budget | The hotel page gives no walking time to the halls | Accor lists ibis under hotels near the Pazhou exhibition centre and gives no distance | ibis Guangzhou International Exhibition Center |

| Shenzhen: Futian | The XRL train from Hong Kong, shopping, business | Higher prices than other districts (our observation; we checked no prices) | Mercure writes about 2 minutes on foot to Hongling North station (Lines 7 and 9) and 6 km, about 18 minutes by car, to Shenzhen railway station | Mercure Shenzhen Sports Center, The Ritz-Carlton Shenzhen |
| Shenzhen: Luohu, by the border | Crossing at Luohu on the Hong Kong East Rail line, late arrivals | Very busy; Wikivoyage warns about touts at Luohu | Shangri-La writes a few steps from Shenzhen railway station and the Luohu border, with Lines 1 and 9 on foot, and about 45 minutes by car from Bao'an airport. Days Inn is on Exit D of Sungang station (see note below) | Shangri-La Shenzhen, Days Inn Shenzhen Luohu |
| Shenzhen: Nanshan and Shenzhen Bay | A bay-side night near the Shenzhen Bay crossing and the Shekou ferry terminal | Far from Luohu, so allow time on the metro | Raffles writes 1 km from the Shenzhen Bay border. Grand Mercure writes next to the border and the Shekou terminal. Note on Days Inn Luohu: the hotel's page says it is directly accessible from Exit D of Sungang station on Line 7 and gives no distance to the Luohu border.
We have no checked hotel on Shamian Island or near the Chimelong resort, because the hotel sites we tried would not load as text. If you want those two areas, you will need to check them yourself.

Frequently asked questions
Should I stay in Guangzhou or Shenzhen first?
If you fly into Baiyun and are going to the fair, start in Guangzhou. If you come from Hong Kong by train, Shenzhen is nearer: the XRL to Futian takes about 14 minutes by the MTR timetable. That is our suggestion, not an official one.
Should I book ahead for the Canton Fair?
Yes. Wikivoyage says rooms are scarce and dear during the fair. The 140th session runs to 4 November 2026, so book as soon as your dates are fixed.
Which hotel is closest to the Luohu border?
Shangri-La Shenzhen writes a few steps from the railway station and the border. Days Inn Luohu is at Sungang station and its page gives no distance to the border.
Which hotel is closest to the Shenzhen Bay border?
Grand Mercure Shenzhen Nanshan writes next to the border, and Raffles Shenzhen writes about 1 km.
How much are the rooms?
We show no room rates or review scores, because we did not read them on the hotels' own sites. Prices change by date and during the fair.
Why no hotel on Shamian Island or near Chimelong?
The hotel sites we tried did not load as text, and we do not list what we could not check.
When was this checked?
On 16 and 17 October 2026 against the hotel sites, the Hong Kong Immigration Department page and Wikivoyage (not official).
How this compares
We opened China Highlights' Guangzhou guide and its Guangzhou and Shenzhen tour plan from Hong Kong. The Guangzhou guide groups hotels by area and names one luxury and one mid-range option in each, with a note that rooms cost more during the fair. The tour plan covers sights and transport. Neither gives the distance from each hotel to the border or the exhibition centre from the hotel's own site. This page lists 12 hotels with the facts their sites state, and says where a site gives none.
Links on this page and our earnings
The search buttons open the providers' own search pages. As of 17 October 2026 we have no registered affiliate link for Guangzhou or Shenzhen and earn nothing from them yet. Our disclosure page explains how affiliate links work and what we never do.
