Guangzhou and Shenzhen Guide: Hong Kong Crossings, XRL

Guangzhou and Shenzhen guide: districts, Canton Tower, safari park, Canton Fair, XRL fares from Hong Kong and border opening hours, checked 17 Oct 2026.

Updated 2026-10-17 · 12 min read · By the AsiaRoamer editorial team

Guangzhou and Shenzhen are the two big cities of Guangdong province, less than an hour apart by high-speed train, so they fit into one trip. Guangzhou has the Canton Tower, dim sum, Shamian Island and the Chimelong safari park. Shenzhen has the Huaqiangbei electronics market, the Dafen oil painting village and the OCT theme parks. If you already fly into Hong Kong, the XRL train gets you to Shenzhen in about 14 minutes by the MTR timetable and to Guangzhou South in 58 to 68 minutes on the services we read.

This is an overview of two cities, not a day-by-day plan. Entry rules, mobile payments and internet limits for the whole country are on the China hub. Everything below was checked on 17 October 2026, and anything we could not check says so.

Who it suits

  • Food and big-city travellers. Wikivoyage says dim sum and Cantonese food are Guangzhou's highlight, and that locals linger over tea and dim sum (yum cha).
  • Trade fair visitors. The Canton Fair is held at the Pazhou complex twice a year. See the Canton Fair page.
  • Electronics and design fans. Wikivoyage calls Huaqiangbei in Shenzhen the centre of the electronics trade.
  • Families who like animals. Chimelong Safari Park is in Guangzhou's Panyu district: Chimelong Safari Park tickets and transport.
  • People adding a leg from Hong Kong. A border crossing or the XRL takes a few dozen minutes.
  • Less suited to old-city atmosphere like Chengdu or Xi'an. Shenzhen is a new city, and Wikivoyage says summers are very hot and humid and overlap typhoon season.

Districts in plain words

The grouping is ours, based on locations the official sites and Wikivoyage give.

Canton Tower and the river at night

Wikivoyage gives the tower's height as 604 m and says it opened on 29 September 2010. The official site puts its ticket prices in a separate booking system that we could not open, so we do not quote a price here. Our Canton Tower page compares figures from two unofficial sites that disagree.

Chimelong Safari Park

Chimelong Safari Park is a zoo in the Chimelong group south of Guangzhou. Its official site says it opened in 1997, keeps about 500 species and over 20,000 animals, and has a small train and a cable car through the park. Prices, hours and ways to get there from Guangzhou South station and the airport are on its own page. The group's Ocean Kingdom is in Hengqin, Zhuhai, outside this Guangzhou and Shenzhen package.

We have not checked entry fees and hours on each site's own page. All of this comes from Wikivoyage, which is not official and was not dated in the text we read.

Crossing between Hong Kong and Shenzhen

There are four main ways. Opening hours are the Hong Kong Immigration Department's (ImmD), read on 17 October 2026. The ImmD page says waits are longer at peak times such as holidays and weekends.

RouteShenzhen endImmD opening hoursNote
XRL from West KowloonFutian or Shenzhen North6:30 am to 11:30 pmImmigration for both sides is at West Kowloon station. Fares and times below
MTR East Rail to Lo WuLuohu border, then Shenzhen Metro Line 16:30 am to midnightThe big land crossing. Wikivoyage says not every last train reaches Lo Wu, so leave margin
East Rail to Lok Ma ChauFutian border, then Lines 4 and 106:30 am to 10:30 pmWikivoyage says the train runs to 21:30, earlier than ImmD's hours
Bus to Shenzhen BayShenzhen Bay border, then Line 136:30 am to midnight (passenger clearance building)Reached from Hong Kong by bus; no train (Wikivoyage)

We could not read the East Rail fare page because the MTR site was under maintenance when we checked, so we give no East Rail fare. Use the MTR journey planner.

The ImmD page also lists Huanggang as open 24 hours; we leave it out of the table because the routes above are the ones most visitors use.

XRL: West Kowloon to Futian and Guangzhou

The MTR High Speed Rail fare chart applies to trains departing from 11 October 2026. Fares are in Hong Kong dollars, adjust monthly with the exchange rate and are subject to the ticketing system at the time of purchase. The prices below are adult, second class.

ToSecond classTime from the official timetable
FutianHK$79About 14 minutes (G5820 departs 7:07, arrives 7:21)
Shenzhen North (Shenzhenbei)HK$87About 18 minutes (G5624 departs 7:01, arrives 7:19)
GuangmingchengHK$110Not checked
Guangzhou South (Guangzhounan)HK$25058 to 68 minutes on the trains we read (for example G6520 departs 12:39, arrives 13:37)
Guangzhou East (Guangzhoudong)HK$250Not checked

The timetable we read starts at 7:01 and its last listed train leaves at 23:00. It says it is for reference only, so rely on the times in the booking system.

Arrival times at Guangzhou South differ by source. Chimelong's travel page says about 47 minutes, the MTR timetable gives 58 to 68, and China Highlights writes about an hour. We use the MTR timetable because it is the operator's own, and we think Chimelong's number is out of date (our assumption).

XRL tickets are tied to the passenger's name and travel document, and you show your passport at the gate. Entry rules for your passport are on the China hub.

Getting here from elsewhere

We could not open an official airline schedule or airport page confirming nonstop flights from Bangkok to Guangzhou (CAN) or Shenzhen (SZX) on the day we checked. AeroRoutes (a news report, not a schedule) says Thai Airways planned to increase Bangkok-Guangzhou to two flights a day from August 2026. Check your airline's own site, and see which airport you land at.

The common route is to fly into Hong Kong and take the XRL or cross the border as above, which is the route for which this page has the most official data.

Wikivoyage says Baiyun airport is about 28 km north of central Guangzhou.

Guangzhou to Shenzhen

Wikivoyage says Shenzhen is less than an hour from Guangzhou by bus or train and that high-speed trains between Shenzhen (Luohu) and Guangzhou East run every 10 to 15 minutes in about an hour, for about CNY 80 one way. That is unofficial and undated. We did not read timetables and fares on the 12306 site, so check the app before you buy.

Season and weather

Wikivoyage says October and November are Guangzhou's best months, with April and May also good, that summers are very humid with temperatures near 40 degrees Celsius, and that typhoon season runs roughly June to September. For Shenzhen it says October to December is pleasantly cool and spring brings fog and rainstorms. The fair runs from mid-April to early May and mid-October to early November, which makes hotels scarce and expensive.

How many days

  • 4 days: two in Guangzhou and two in Shenzhen, good for a first visit.
  • 5 to 6 days: add a safari park day and a river walk, or a day trip to Hong Kong.
  • For the fair: the phases are 8 days apart, so if you need more than one, plan separate trips.

These are our suggestions, not official figures.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do I need for Guangzhou and Shenzhen?

We suggest 4 days for a first trip, two in each city, and 5 to 6 if you add the safari park or a Hong Kong day.

What is the fastest way from Hong Kong to Shenzhen?

The XRL from West Kowloon to Futian takes about 14 minutes by the MTR timetable and costs HK$79 second class on trains from 11 October 2026.

How long and how much to Guangzhou?

HK$250 second class to Guangzhou South, and 58 to 68 minutes on the trains we read.

What hours do the borders open?

Per the Hong Kong Immigration Department: Lo Wu 6:30 am to midnight, Lok Ma Chau Spur Line 6:30 am to 10:30 pm, Shenzhen Bay 6:30 am to midnight and the West Kowloon XRL 6:30 am to 11:30 pm. Hours can change at festivals.

Are there direct flights from Bangkok?

We could not confirm from an official schedule. AeroRoutes reports Thai Airways planned Bangkok-Guangzhou flights increased from August 2026, but that is a news report, so check the airline.

When should I go?

Wikivoyage says October and November have the best weather, but rooms are scarce and expensive while the Canton Fair runs. If you are not going to the fair, avoid the fair dates.

Do I need a visa?

It depends on your passport. See the China hub for the 30-day visa-free list, the 240-hour transit rule and the arrival card.

When was this checked?

On 17 October 2026, from the MTR fare chart and timetable, the Hong Kong Immigration Department page, Chimelong's site, a copy of the Canton Tower site and the Canton Fair announcement. Wikivoyage is not official. Prices and times change.

How this compares

We opened China Highlights' Guangzhou travel guide and its Guangzhou and Shenzhen tour plan from Hong Kong, plus Lonely Planet's Guangzhou page. China Highlights' pages are long and give a city overview, hotel suggestions, and approximate crossing times in round numbers (for example about 20 minutes to Shenzhen North and about an hour to Guangzhou South). Lonely Planet's page is a destination hub of stories and listings. This page quotes the HK dollar fare and the timetable's own times from the operator, the ImmD opening hours, and says which figures we did not check. Where we lag is entry fees for Shenzhen's parks and markets, which we say plainly are unchecked.

The search buttons for hotels and tours open the providers' own search pages. As of 17 October 2026 we have no registered affiliate link for Guangzhou and Shenzhen and earn nothing from them yet. Our disclosure page explains how affiliate links work and what we never do.
