Choosing a base in Xi'an is easier once you decide between the walled old city and the districts to the south and south-east. This page compares the areas and 11 hotels whose details we checked against each hotel's own website on 16 October 2026. All were read from the hotels' Accor pages, and three have their main text in Chinese, which we translated ourselves. We have not stayed at any of them. The card text is what each hotel's site says, and we show no room rates or review scores.
If you have not chosen your sights yet, read the Xi'an guide first. Entry rules and payments are on the China hub.

Areas compared
| Area | Best for | Watch out for | Transport |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bell Tower (inside the wall) | Walking to the Bell Tower, Drum Tower, Muslim Quarter and City Wall | Crowded; some rooms may hear street noise (we did not check) | Novotel writes Exit H of Bell Tower station, Lines 2 and 6. Mercure Downtown writes a 6-minute walk to Bell Tower station, Line 2 |
| Inside the wall, east side | The old city and the Forest of Stone Steles | The hotel pages give no walking time to a station for some | Grand Mercure writes a 5-minute walk to Lines 1 and 4. Sofitel Renmin Square says Lines 1 and 4 are near |
| Muslim Quarter, Guangji Street | Eating in the Muslim Quarter at every meal | Wikivoyage warns of high prices and rubbish on the streets | ibis Huimin Street names no station; it is near the Bell and Drum Towers |
| South Gate, by Yongning Gate | Shopping and climbing the wall at the South Gate | The hotel page names no metro station | Wikivoyage says the area outside the south wall has shopping and nightlife |
| Big Wild Goose Pagoda and Qujiang | The pagoda, the Great Tang All Day Mall and Tang Paradise | Outside the old city, so you ride the metro to the Bell Tower | Mercure History Museum names Dayanta station, Lines 3 and 4 |
| Xi'an North station | High-speed trains and the airport via Line 14 | Outside the old city | Mercure Xi'an North writes Line 2 about 500 m and Line 4 about 1 km |
| Lintong | The Terracotta Army and Huaqing Palace without a long morning ride | Far from the city, with no city sights close by | Angsana gives no travel time to the museum; see the Terracotta Army page |

Choose the metro line before the hotel
Wikivoyage says the Bell Tower is the city centre, Line 2 passes it, Line 3 passes the Big Wild Goose Pagoda (Dayanta station) and Line 14 links the airport with Xi'an North. Once you know which sight you want first, choose a hotel whose site names that line's station. If you will not use the metro at all, the walk from the Bell Tower to the Drum Tower and Muslim Quarter is a few minutes, as Novotel writes 3 minutes.

Getting to your area
From Xianyang Airport
The metro fare, time and the Terminal 5 station name are inconsistent across sources, as noted in the Xi'an guide, so we give no numbers here. Mercure Downtown writes about 40 minutes by car to the airport, and Mercure Xi'an North says it is 23 km away.
From the railway station
Xi'an North receives the high-speed trains. Wikivoyage puts it about 15 km from the centre and says to change to Line 2 for the city. The older Xi'an railway station lies just outside the north wall. Mercure Downtown writes 2.8 km and about 10 minutes by car from Xi'an railway station. For train tickets see the 12306 notes on the China hub.

Hotels by what their sites say
This table uses only the distances and times each hotel writes itself, checked on 16 October 2026. A dash means the site does not say, which does not mean far or near.
| Hotel | Station or route per the site | Other distances the site gives |
|---|---|---|
| Sofitel Legend People's Grand | - | Bell and Drum Towers 1.8 km, Muslim Quarter 1.5 km, Yongning Gate 2.9 km |
| Sofitel Xian on Renmin Square | Lines 1 and 4 near | Inside the City Wall, near the Bell Tower, Drum Tower, Muslim Quarter and Forest of Stone Steles |
| Grand Mercure Renmin Square | 5-minute walk to Lines 1 and 4 | Inside the Ming-dynasty wall |
| Mercure Downtown | 6-minute walk to Bell Tower station (Line 2), about 10 minutes to Beidajie (Line 1) | 2.8 km and about 10 minutes by car from Xi'an railway station |
| Novotel The Bell Tower | Entrance at Exit H of Bell Tower station, Lines 2 and 6 | 3-minute walk to the Bell Tower, Drum Tower and Muslim Quarter; 8 minutes to the South Gate wall |
| ibis Huimin Street | - | On Guangji Street near the Bell Tower, Drum Tower and Huimin Street |
| ibis South Gate | - | In the South Gate business district near malls |
| Mercure Dayan Pagoda | - | On Yanta West Road, Yanta district |
| Mercure History Museum | Near Dayanta station, Lines 3 and 4 (Chinese text) | In the centre of the Qujiang new district |
| Mercure Xi'an North | Line 2 about 500 m, Line 4 about 1 km | About 1 km from Xi'an North high-speed station, 23 km from the airport |
| Angsana Lintong | - | At the foot of Mount Li, Yuechen East Road, Lintong |
Takeaway: for a walk to the Bell Tower and Muslim Quarter without transport, look at Novotel and Mercure Downtown. For an early high-speed train, look at Mercure Xi'an North, whose site says about 1 km to the station. That figure is the hotel's own and we have not measured the route.

Checked hotels
The cards below show facts checked against each hotel's own website on 16 October 2026, with standout facts and cautions. There are no room rates or review scores, and we have not stayed at any of them. All are Accor hotels, because Accor's pages were the ones we could open automatically. Marriott, IHG, Hyatt and Hilton block automated reading, so those chains are not in the list. That does not mean they are worse.
Hand-picked places to stay
Examples of established Xi'an hotels, spread across areas and budget bands. Every fact below was checked against the hotel's own website or a reputable source on 2026-10-16 and links to that source. We have not stayed at these places and give no ratings; we show no prices because rates change daily. The band is the property class (hostel or guesthouse, mid-range, upscale), not a live price.

What to check before you book
- Open a map and check the real route from the station exit, because some sites say only that a station is near.
- Check the check-in time, cancellation terms and fees on the actual booking page.
- If you land late, check the Line 14 timetable for that day or ask the hotel about transfers. Wikivoyage warns of unlicensed cars at the airport.
- If you plan to visit the Terracotta Army, read the Terracotta Army page first. The ticket must be booked by name before you go.
How this guide compares
We read China Highlights' and Lonely Planet's Xi'an pages on 17 October 2026 as English benchmarks. They suggest areas and well-known hotels, but we did not find walking times written by the hotels themselves or a note on which chains we could not read. This page uses only distances the hotels publish, drops what a hotel does not say, and tells you which chains are missing.
Links on this page and our earnings
The buttons in the booking box open the providers' hotel search pages for Xi'an. As of 17 October 2026 we have no registered affiliate link for Xi'an and earn nothing from them yet, and we do not compare prices. The "Official site" link on each card opens the hotel's own website.
