Jiuzhaigou is a valley of blue-green lakes in northern Sichuan, and it is not a day trip from Chengdu. The official site gives a high-season (1 April to 15 November) ticket of CNY 190 plus a valley shuttle of CNY 90, which we add up to CNY 280 per person, and a maximum of 41,000 visitors a day. Everyone must book by real name. The holiday notice we read says the park was full for 2 to 5 October 2026. The official site's daily numbers showed 30,098 visitors on 15 October and 33,668 on 14 October 2026, as read on 16 October. We did not visit for this page.

This page covers Jiuzhaigou only. For the city see the Chengdu travel guide and for hotels where to stay in Chengdu. Entry rules and payments are on the China hub. A shorter option from Chengdu is the Leshan Giant Buddha, and for pandas see the Panda Base.

Rules from the site's notice (checked 17 October 2026):

  • Ticket and ID must match. Everyone books by real name and carries the original ID to enter. The notice says "valid ID" in the Chinese-system sense. We did not check how a foreign passport is handled, so confirm with the ticket line 0837-7769999 before you pay.
  • Free and discount groups must also book ahead, and must show their original discount documents. Without a booking you cannot enter.
  • Using a forged or borrowed identity is illegal. The notice says offenders are handed to the police.
  • Beware of cheap tickets and "quick entry" offers. The official page tells you not to trust them.
  • Booking channel: the official WeChat account for Jiuzhaigou (under "Must-see for visitors, ticket booking"), and the mini programme named "Jiuzhaigou Tourism Official Platform" per the notices.

Quota and entry times

From the notices of 26 and 28 September 2026:

  • High season admits at most 41,000 visitors a day. Sales stop when full. The 26 September notice says 2 to 5 October were already at 41,000.
  • It recommends booking 7 to 14 days ahead.
  • If a day is full, there is a waitlist in the mini programme. If you do not get a place you are refunded to the original channel.
  • Cancelled tickets go back into stock. The site releases stock at 08:00 and 17:00 every day.
  • During the holiday, entry is 07:30 to 14:00 (no entry after 14:00) and the park closes at 18:00. We did not check ordinary weekdays, so see the latest notice.
  • The park lies at 2,000 to 3,100 m. The notice warns about altitude sickness.
  • You may not stay overnight in the valley ("tour in, sleep out"), fly drones or bring flammables, per the notice.
  • Phone numbers in the notice: tickets 0837-7769999, tourism 0837-7739753, complaints 0837-7739309, ambulance 0837-7738818, valley shuttle 0837-7766016.

The daily numbers on the site are history, not a promise of tickets on your date. If your date is full, the notice suggests another date or nearby sights such as Shenxian Pond and Jiawuhai (Panda Park).

The official one-day route

The valley is Y-shaped, about 60 km of arms in total. The right arm, Rize Valley, is what the site calls the main highlight. The left arm, Zechawa Valley, has Long Lake and Five Flower Lake, and the lower arm is Shuzheng Valley. The site's one-day route mixes shuttle and walking. From the entrance to the Primeval Forest takes about 1 hour. Then you walk and ride past Grass Lake, Swan Lake, Arrow Bamboo Lake, Panda Lake, Five Flower Lake, Mirror Lake and the Nuorilang lakes. Lunch is at the Nuorilang restaurant. In the afternoon you go to Long Lake, Five Flower Lake and Shuzheng, leaving the valley at about 17:35 on the site's timetable. The site says a one-day trip is tiring and suggests a two-day plan, with an easy first day in Zechawa and Shuzheng and the second day in Rize. We did not time the walking ourselves.

Getting there from Chengdu

From the official "Getting there" page (re-checked 17 October 2026).

WayWhat the site saysOur note
High-speed trainThe Chengdu East to Huangshengguan section opened on 30 August (top speed 200 km/h). Fastest Chengdu East to Huanglong Jiuzhai station is 1 h 39 min, up to 30 pairs a day. The station is at 2,977 m, 27 km (35 min) from Huanglong and 93 km (2 hours) from Jiuzhaigou. A direct bus runs from the station to the park. Prices are on 12306The official site recommends this first. We did not check a live timetable on 12306
FlightJiuhuang Airport is 88 km (1.5 hours) from the valley entrance. The site lists direct flights from Chengdu, Chongqing, Beijing, Shanghai and other cities. It is a plateau airport and can close for snowPlan a back-up for the return
Bus from ChengduFrom Chadianzi and Xinnanmen stations, 440 km, 9 to 10 hoursWikivoyage gives CNY 121 (Chadianzi) and CNY 156 (Xinnanmen), unofficial
DrivingChengdu-Wenchuan-Maoxian-Songpan-Jiuzhaigou, 440 km, 9 to 10 hoursWe do not recommend it as a single day

Putting this together, we think Jiuzhaigou is a 2 to 3 day trip, with a night in Jiuzhaigou town or near the entrance and the park the next morning. The notice says you cannot sleep inside the valley.

When to go

The site divides high and low season by price and quota. The high season admits 41,000 people a day, and the holiday of 2 to 5 October 2026 was full. The National Day notice calls October "the most beautiful season of the year" for autumn colour. We did not check monthly weather from an official source, so look at the forecast. Mountain weather changes fast, and the notice suggests layers.

Who it suits

  • Short on time: the Leshan Buddha and the Panda Base are both day trips from the city.
  • Nature lovers with 3 days or more: the high-speed train or a flight, then a night near the entrance (our suggestion).
  • Altitude worries: the park is 2,000 to 3,100 m and the train station is at 2,977 m, per the official site. Talk to a doctor first if you have a medical condition.

Frequently asked questions

How much is Jiuzhaigou?

High season (1 April to 15 November): CNY 190 entry plus CNY 90 shuttle, CNY 280 in total. Low season (16 November to 31 March): CNY 80 plus CNY 80, CNY 160 in total. Source: the official site, re-checked 17 October 2026.

Do I have to book, and how?

Yes. Everyone books by real name ahead of time through the official WeChat account or the "Jiuzhaigou Tourism Official Platform" mini programme. The notices recommend 7 to 14 days ahead, and without a booking you cannot enter.

What is the daily quota and what if it is full?

41,000 a day in the high season. If full, use the waitlist in the mini programme, check the 08:00 and 17:00 releases of cancelled tickets, or pick another day.

What time can I enter?

The holiday notice says 07:30 to 14:00, with the park closing at 18:00. We did not check ordinary weekdays, so see the latest notice.

How long does it take from Chengdu?

Fastest train 1 h 39 min to Huanglong Jiuzhai station, then about 2 more hours to the park. By road or bus 9 to 10 hours. We therefore suggest 2 to 3 days.

Can I use a foreign passport?

The notice says a valid original ID is required, in Chinese terms. We did not check foreign passports, so confirm with the ticket line 0837-7769999 before you pay.

When was this checked?

On 16 October 2026 and re-opened on 17 October 2026 for prices and getting there. Prices, quota and hours can change, so read the latest notice, including partial closures and warnings, before you book.

How this guide compares

We opened KKday's Jiuzhaigou private-tour page and Travel China Guide's Chengdu guide as comparisons. They describe the scenery and sell tours. They do not set out the quota of 41,000, the seasonal fee table and entry times from the park's own notices. This page does, with a warning that it is not a day trip from Chengdu. What we have not checked, such as foreign passport handling and the live train timetable, we say plainly.

The tour search buttons open the providers' own search pages. As of 17 October 2026 we have no registered affiliate link for Jiuzhaigou and earn nothing from them yet. Official park tickets can only be bought through the channels listed above.
