Harbin is worth the trip if you want winter at full strength: ice buildings lit at night, snow sculptures and temperatures that stay below -10 C for weeks. Two things matter before you buy a flight. First, the organisers announced on 12 October 2026 that the 28th Harbin Ice and Snow World will grow to 1.25 million square metres, but they gave no opening date and no ticket price. Second, last season ended early because of a warm spell (details on the festival page). Every figure below was checked on 17 October 2026 against official announcements, state media and hotel sites. Where we could not check something, we say so.
This is a city guide, not a day-by-day itinerary. Entry rules, visa-free routes, payments and blocked apps are on the China hub. Hotels by district are in where to stay in Harbin. Tickets and the festival itself are on the Ice and Snow World page.

Who Harbin suits and how long to stay
Almost everyone goes for the snow and ice. Outside winter you will miss the main attraction, which is our opinion rather than an official statement. The festival season is covered in the next section.
| Trip | Best for | Suggested shape (our view) |
|---|---|---|
| 3 nights | First visit, main sights | Day 1 Central Avenue and St Sophia Church. Day 2 Sun Island by day, Ice and Snow World in the evening. Day 3 Siberian Tiger Park or a slow day |
| 4 to 5 nights | Adding Snow Town | Add a Snow Town tour. The packages we saw are two-day trips, not day returns (see Snow Town below) |
| Combined with Beijing | Two cities in one trip | High-speed train from Beijing; see the Beijing guide |
The main sights we checked
Harbin Ice and Snow World
The best known attraction. The official announcement of 12 October 2026 says the 28th edition will cover 1.25 million sq m, use 400,000 cubic metres of ice and snow, include more than 1,000 ice and snow structures and add a longer ice slide in the west zone. It gives no opening date or price. Everything else is on the Ice and Snow World page.

Sun Island and the snow sculpture expo
China News Service reported that the 38th Sun Island International Snow Sculpture Expo opened on 31 December 2025, with a planned 1.5 million sq m and 120,000 cubic metres of snow, laid out in 7 main zones and 2 extra zones. The Dream Snow Stage ran daily from 12:30 to 15:00. We found no official ticket price or opening hours for this edition. One third-party seller listed the previous edition at CNY 198 for adults and CNY 128 for concessions, from 09:00 to 17:00, but that is old and unofficial, so we do not treat it as this year's price. We have not written a separate page because there is no official price or hours to check.

Central Avenue and St Sophia Church
Wikivoyage (not official) describes Zhongyang Street, also called Central Avenue, as a pedestrian street of about 1.4 km, free to enter and closing around 22:00. You reach it by Metro Line 2 to Zhongyang Dajie station. St Sophia Church stands at the corner of Zhaolin Street and Toulong Street, and Wikivoyage lists the entry fee as CNY 20; the building is now the Harbin Architecture Museum. We did not open official sites for either, so confirm hours and the fee before you go.

The Songhua River
The Songhua River divides the Daoli side from the Songbei side. Hotels on the riverbank on our hotel page describe their own river views. Photos on Wikimedia Commons show people playing on the frozen river in winter. We did not check ice-safety rules or activity prices from an official source, so we give no figures.

Siberian Tiger Park
Wikivoyage places it in Songbei, open 08:30 to 16:00, with a viewing bus ride costing CNY 100 in total (CNY 90 entry plus CNY 10 for the bus), about an hour on site, and a taxi from the centre at about CNY 40. These are unofficial figures from one page that we did not verify with the park, so check hours and prices before you go.

China Snow Town
Xinhua reports that China Snow Town in Mudanjiang, Heilongjiang, opened its latest winter season on 17 November 2025. It sits where the Zhangguangcai and Laoye ranges meet, snow starts around October and lasts about seven months, and the deepest cover reaches 2 metres. The previous season drew 1.452 million visitors and offered more than 30 cultural and tourism activities. We found no official ticket price or opening hours.
On distance, a tour operator in China says Snow Town is about 280 km from Harbin, an unofficial source. A seller page on KKday describes a two-day package with about 5 hours' driving from Harbin. We therefore cannot confirm that a same-day return is comfortable, and we have not written a page for it.

City layout in words
Wikivoyage divides Harbin into 9 urban districts. These are the ones visitors use most. The grouping of hotel areas comes from locations the hotels themselves write.
- Daoli is the south bank, with Central Avenue and St Sophia Church. It suits anyone who wants to walk the old city.
- Songbei is the north bank, with Ice and Snow World, Sun Island and the Siberian Tiger Park. Shangri-La Songbei says it is 2 to 3.5 km from Ice and Snow World and Sun Island.
- Nangang and Harbin West station are the railway districts. The Mercure and ibis near the west station say they are by Metro Line 3.
- Xiangfang holds the provincial government district, per Sofitel Harbin.

Getting there
We could not confirm direct flights to Harbin from airline or airport sites. Wikipedia (not official) lists some seasonal international services to Harbin Taiping (HRB), but we have not checked any of them with an airline. Look at the airline's own schedule for your dates. If there is no direct flight, you will connect in another Chinese city or abroad; we did not check connection schedules, so we name no cities.
Harbin Taiping (HRB) is the airport for international flights, south-west of the city.

From Beijing by high-speed train
China Daily (22 January 2026) reports that the fastest high-speed train from Beijing to Harbin takes 4 h 33 min over 1,198 km, and that train G902 on the anniversary run took 4 h 36 min from Harbin West to Beijing Chaoyang. Wikivoyage gives a very different figure, about 8 hours for a D train to Harbin West, but we use the newer China Daily figure. Check real times and book on 12306, as explained on the China hub. We did not check ticket prices.

From the airport into the city
| Option | What we checked | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Airport bus | China Southern lists lines 1 to 4 and a Wanda City line, stopping at places such as Harbin station, Harbin West station and Zhongyang Street. The page does not give fares. Wikivoyage says CNY 20 and about 1 hour, tickets from a counter in the terminal | China Southern and Wikivoyage |
| Taxi | 33 km, about 45 minutes per China Southern. Wikivoyage says CNY 100 to 130, agree the price first | China Southern and Wikivoyage |
Distances differ by source: Wikivoyage says 37 km, China Southern 33 km, and the Ritz-Carlton gives 35 km to its own hotel. Treat them as a range. We found no official figure on the airport's own site and did not check the metro link to the airport.
Seasons and real weather
The temperatures below are the 1991 to 2020 normals that Wikipedia cites from the China Meteorological Administration, for a station at 118 m elevation. They are averages, so expect colder nights.
| Month | Average high (C) | Average low (C) | Record low (C) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oct | 12.6 | 1.6 | -16.2 |
| Nov | 0.1 | -9.0 | -26.5 |
| Dec | -9.8 | -19.1 | -35.7 |
| Jan | -11.8 | -22.4 | -42.6 |
| Feb | -5.9 | -17.8 | -37.3 |
| Mar | 3.2 | -8.2 | -29.0 |
From December to February the average low sits around -18 to -22 C. Last season, the Ice and Snow World opened on 17 December 2025 and closed early on 21 February 2026 after temperatures rose sharply on 20 and 21 February.
What to wear is our advice, not official information. Use layers: a thermal base layer, an insulating middle layer and a windproof, waterproof shell. Add gloves, a hat that covers your ears, thermal socks and non-slip boots for ice. Bring a power bank, because phone batteries drain fast in extreme cold.

If you are continuing to Beijing, see the Beijing guide. We have not checked train schedules and prices from Harbin to other cities, so we give no travel times.

How this guide compares
We read China Highlights' Harbin Ice Festival page and Travel China Guide's Harbin page as English benchmarks on 17 October 2026. China Highlights says the next season is likely to open around 20 December 2026, a forecast rather than a confirmed date, and it gives no ticket prices. Travel China Guide's page (last updated 8 July 2026) gives no ticket prices, hotel prices or festival dates, and its visa-free transit note is dated 2015. This page prints the figures that officials have published, says plainly that the 2026/27 dates and prices are not out, and marks every figure we could not check.
