Zhangjiajie (张家界) is in north-west Hunan and is the gateway to two places many travellers already know: the Wulingyuan sandstone pillars that inspired the floating mountains in the film Avatar, and Tianmen Mountain with its cave-gateway in a cliff. To do it justice, plan 3 to 4 days: 2 in the national forest park, 1 on Tianmen Mountain, and one more for the old river town of Fenghuang if you have time. The official ticket rules and a few prices we could confirm from the official Wulingyuan tourism site, but for direct flights and some prices we could not open an official source, and we say so in each section. Figures were read on 16 October 2026 and carried into this page on 17 October 2026.

Entry rules, payments, internet limits and trains for the country are on the China hub. Detail pages cover Wulingyuan national forest park, Tianmen Mountain and where to stay in Zhangjiajie.

Who Zhangjiajie suits

It suits people who like hiking, strange natural scenery and can tolerate long queues. Wikivoyage warns that the Bailong Elevator queue is long at busy times and that the Tianmen Mountain cable car can take more than an hour on some days. If you travel with older people or small children, choose a hotel close to the cable car station and do not plan several sights in one day. If you are afraid of heights, know that cliffside walkways and glass bridges are part of the main programme here.

The area in words

  • Yongding, the main town is where most people arrive. The airport, the railway station, the central bus station and the Tianmen Mountain cable car station are all in or beside town.
  • Wulingyuan town is north of Yongding and sits at the park gate, with hotels and restaurants. Wikivoyage lists a Tourism Line A bus from the central bus station to the national forest park gate in about 40 minutes.
  • The Wulingyuan core scenic area is split into four parts on the official site: the national forest park, Suoxiyu, Tianzishan and Yangjiajie. One ticket covers all four.
  • Tianmen Mountain is south of town. The official site gives the distance from town two ways on one page (10 km and 8 km).
  • The Grand Canyon and glass bridge are in Cili County, next to Wulingyuan. The official site calls them a recently developed attraction.

National forest park and Wulingyuan

The official site says Zhangjiajie National Forest Park covers 130 square kilometres, was China's first national forest park and has six subareas: Huangshizhai, Pipaxi, Jinbianxi (Golden Whip Stream), Yaozizhai, Shedaogou and Yuanjiajie. Most visitors look for the Avatar Hallelujah Mountain: the site says the pillar known as "Southern Sky Column" was renamed Avatar Hallelujah Mountain on 25 January 2010. Ticket details, hours and the elevator are on the forest park page.

Wikivoyage's sample route: day one, go through the national forest park gate, take the cable car up to Huangshizhai and walk the summit loop of about 100 minutes, descend along the 4 km Golden Whip Stream and end with the Bailong Elevator. Day two, Yangjiajie and Yuanjiajie. This is a wiki author's suggestion, not an official timetable.

Tianmen Mountain

Tianmen Mountain is south of town and takes its name from Tianmen Cave, a natural gateway in the cliff that the official site gives as 131.5 m high and 57 m wide. The official site also describes the "Tongtian Avenue" mountain road with 99 bends and a cable car 7,454 m long with a height difference of 1,277 m. The Ramada hotel in town writes that the summit has 999 steps up to the cave and glass walkways along the cliff. Prices, routes A, B and C and the March 2026 cable car closure are on the Tianmen Mountain page.

Grand Canyon and glass bridge

The official Wulingyuan site says the Grand Canyon is in Cili with waterfalls and wooden boardwalks beside a stream. Wikivoyage says the glass bridge opened in 2016 and that tickets come in several types, including bridge only and bridge plus canyon, but its prices are old. Sina Travel (12 October 2026, media rather than an official source) says the Grand Canyon including the bridge costs CNY 128 and must be reserved in advance. We could not find an official bridge site that opened, so we have no separate page and do not state a price as fact. Check the park's booking channel before you go.

Day trip to Fenghuang

Fenghuang is an old river town in western Hunan. Wikivoyage says the easiest way is the high-speed train from Zhangjiajie, about 50 to 65 minutes to Fenghuang Gucheng station. Buses run about 4 times a day, take 4.5 to 5.5 hours and cost CNY 65 to 75. A combined ticket for sights in the old town comes in three types at CNY 98, 148 and 168 according to Wikivoyage, but the wiki gives no year and we found no official old-town site we could read, so ask at the gate before buying. The old town can be seen in a day, but check the last return train if you go and come back on the same day.

Getting to Zhangjiajie

Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport (DYG) serves the city. Wikivoyage (last edited 2026) says it has flights to several domestic cities, Taiwan and South Korea, roughly 25 a day, and does not mention Thailand. The official Wulingyuan site says Zhangjiajie has charter flights (包机) to Bangkok and Seoul, but the page is undated. All we can say is that charter flights from Bangkok may exist, and we have not confirmed a scheduled direct flight. We could not open the airport's website on the day and flight aggregators refuse automated readers, so we do not name airlines or dates.

The readable alternative is to fly into a larger Chinese city and connect. Wikivoyage says Zhangjiajie is about 250 km from Changsha and the high-speed train from Changsha goes straight to Zhangjiajie West in about 2 hours, with second-class fares of about CNY 129 to 166. Use the 12306 app as explained on the China hub for real timetables and prices. We have not checked connecting routes from abroad.

From the airport and station into town

ItemWhat we foundVerification

To the park gate from the central bus stationWikivoyage lists Tourism Line A to the national forest park gate at CNY 11 for about 40 minutes and Line B to the Suoxiyu gate at CNY 12. The official site describes a special bus from the Wulingyuan bus station to the national forest park gate, 25 km, CNY 10 and 30 minutesThe two sources differ and describe different routes. Check on site
Airport taxisWikivoyage warns that some drivers refuse to use the meter or claim parking fees. Ask your hotel to talk to the driverWikivoyage

These fares and times are not from the operators, and we had no readable site for the bus or the airport. If you land late, ask your hotel about a pick-up.

Seasons and weather

Wikivoyage describes a humid subtropical climate with four seasons, heavy rain from May to August, and summits 5 to 10 degrees cooler than town. Summer highs reach about 39 C in town and about 30 C on the mountain, and it advises long sleeves if you stay overnight on a summit. Spring and autumn are best. We found no official source on fog, snow or the busiest weeks, so we do not name the months when mist or snow arrive. Check the forecast before buying a ticket for a set date, because the park ticket is date-specific.

How many days and in what order

Our suggestion, not an official figure: at least 3 full days. Days 1 and 2 in the national forest park, which fits the official 4-day ticket. Day 3 on Tianmen Mountain. Add days for Fenghuang or the glass bridge. Do not squeeze the park and Tianmen Mountain into one day, because both involve travel and queues, and Tianmen Mountain depends on which cable car routes are running that day.

Where to stay

We checked 10 hotels against hotel sites or the official Wulingyuan tourism site, spread across Wulingyuan town and Yongding. See where to stay in Zhangjiajie for the area table. If you will spend two days in the park, stay in Wulingyuan. If you will go up Tianmen Mountain or catch an early train, stay in town. We have not checked hotels inside the park, so we name none.

How this guide compares

We read China Highlights' Zhangjiajie guide and Travel China Guide's Wulingyuan page on 17 October 2026. Both give a solid overview of the sights. Travel China Guide lists the park ticket as CNY 165 admission or CNY 224 with the eco-bus, which is older than the official CNY 236 with shuttle we read, and neither benchmark showed the March 2026 Tianmen cable car change. This guide keeps official figures apart from unofficial ones, names the date each was read, and says plainly that we could not confirm a direct flight from Bangkok.

The booking buttons on this site's Zhangjiajie pages open the providers' search pages. As of 17 October 2026 we have no registered affiliate link for Zhangjiajie and earn nothing from them yet. We do not compare prices.

Hand-picked places to stay

Examples of established Zhangjiajie hotels, spread across areas and budget bands. Every fact below was checked against the hotel's own website or a reputable source on 2026-10-16 and links to that source. We have not stayed at these places and give no ratings; we show no prices because rates change daily. The band is the property class (hostel or guesthouse, mid-range, upscale), not a live price.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Zhangjiajie?

That depends on your passport. See the China hub for the visa-free and 240-hour transit rules and the dates we checked them.

Is there a direct flight from Bangkok to Zhangjiajie?

The official Wulingyuan site says there are charter flights to Bangkok but gives no dates, and Wikivoyage (2026) does not mention Thailand. We have not confirmed a scheduled flight, so check an airline site or booking app for real dates.

Are Zhangjiajie and Wulingyuan the same place?

Not quite. Zhangjiajie is the city; Wulingyuan is the World Heritage scenic area north of it. The official site says the core area is split into four parts covered by one ticket, while Tianmen Mountain and the Grand Canyon need separate tickets.

Do I need to buy tickets in advance?

The official site says that for bookings more than 10 days ahead you should contact the ticket management centre, and it lists an official WeChat mini-program, "Zhangjiajie e Chu You" (transliterated). We have only media reports, not official figures, on how fast tickets sell out, so book ahead if you go on a public holiday.

How many days do I need?

At least 3 full days (our suggestion). Add days for Fenghuang or the glass bridge. The official park ticket is valid for 4 consecutive days.

Can I visit Fenghuang from Zhangjiajie in a day?

Wikivoyage says the high-speed train takes 50 to 65 minutes, so a day trip is possible in principle. Check train times on 12306 and allow time in the old town. Stay one night if you want to see it lit up in the evening.

Is Tianmen Mountain open on every route?

Not always. The Hunan government reported that from 9 to 20 March 2026 the Tianmen Cave express cable car was closed for maintenance and only round-trip route A was open. See the Tianmen Mountain page and ask about the status for your travel date.
