Disclosure: we are an affiliate partner of travel booking sites, but these links currently open the providers' own sites and earn us nothing yet.

Koh Mak is a small island of about 16 km² in Trat province, and the choice of where to stay comes down to three areas: Ao Kao on the southwest coast, where koh-mak.com says most resorts and the small restaurants and shops are; Ao Suan Yai, Ao Pra and the headland between them on the northwest; and the quiet north and east shore, where only a few resorts sit. Each hotel here is reached by boat, then a pickup or a short ride, so the pier you land at matters more than on most islands. Our Koh Mak guide covers boats, piers, cash and seasons.

Use the quick answer above, then the table to compare areas. We show no prices because rates change with dates and room type, and the rate links open booking search with your own dates. We have not stayed at these hotels: every card shows facts taken from the hotel's own website and checked on 16 October 2026, after a separate verification pass. Facts that could not be re-found on the hotel's site were removed. Some of these sites are old: Makathanee still shows a 2014 promotion and Koh Mak Resort's boat times are marked 2019, so confirm important details with the hotel.

How to choose

  1. Decide what the trip is for. Restaurants and shops within walking distance point to Ao Kao; long beaches and sunsets point to Ao Suan Yai and Ao Pra; seclusion points to the east shore. Koh Mak has no party scene whichever you choose.
  2. Plan the boat before you book. Hotels name Laem Ngop (Krom Luang) pier, Boonsiri and 12Go use Laem Sok pier, and the three Koh Mak piers sit on different beaches. Tell the hotel your boat and pier so it can arrange a pickup, which several hotels offer on their sites.
  3. Compare the final rate with tax, breakfast, transfers and cancellation terms, and check the cautions on each card: one resort takes direct bookings only with a five-night minimum, one states no pets, and the island has no ATM, so ask whether the hotel takes cards.

Makathanee has its own pier here; other hotels offer pickup from a pier

koh-mak.com says most resorts on the island line this long southwest-facing beach, and small restaurants, cafes and shops sit on the road behind it. Our list puts Makathanee, Baan Koh Mak, White Sand and Lazy Day here (the Lazy Day and Baan Koh Mak sites do not name the beach, so we follow independent guides), plus Good Time Sports Resort on a ridge between Ao Kao and Ao Pra. Nothing is far from the road, which makes it the easiest area for a first visit.

Choose it if: You want a few restaurants and shops within walking distance and a simple boat pickup.

Skip it if: You want an empty beach and no road behind you.

Mistake to avoid: Do not assume every hotel here is on the sand: Good Time sits on a ridge, and White Sand takes direct bookings only with a five-night minimum.

Koh Mak Resort has its own pier here; hotels offer pickup from piers

Seavana and Koh Mak Resort sit on Ao Suan Yai, Mira Montra on Ao Pra, Cococape on the cape between the two bays, and Islanda on a hill above. koh-mak.com says a headland of dark volcanic rocks separates Ao Suan Yai from Ao Pra, which it describes as a shallow, usually deserted bay. Seavana's beach-facilities page describes a sunset spot with views to the northwest, and Ao Suan Yai is a 15-minute walk from Ao Kao according to koh-mak.com.

Choose it if: You want a long beach, sunset views and either a family resort or a quieter villa stay.

Skip it if: You want shops and restaurants on the road outside your door.

Mistake to avoid: Do not treat the headland as a beach: Cococape says its land is on the cape between the two bays, and Islanda sits on a hill, so check the pin for the walk to the sand.

Own transport or pickup; Koh Mak Retreat says the nearest resort is about 3 km away

koh-mak.com says tracks on the northeastern shore run through hamlets of fishermen and rubber farmers, and that most of the island's development has bypassed the area. Our list has Koh Mak Retreat on Ao Pai Beach and Little Moon Villa, which its site says moved to a private beach at Ao Talong. Both are far from the shops, so plan transport.

Choose it if: You want to be well away from other guests and do not mind relying on the hotel or a bike.

Skip it if: You want a walk to restaurants or a pale-sand swimming beach.

Mistake to avoid: Do not book here without checking how you will get to the beach and shops: the Retreat's own site says the nearest resort is about 3 km away.

Day trips and planning from Koh Mak

We have no registered tour listing for Koh Mak yet, so we show no tour prices. The button opens Klook's own Koh Mak search, which currently earns us nothing. Resort sites list snorkelling, kayaking and island-hopping, so ask your hotel first.

Disclosure: we are an affiliate partner of travel booking sites, but these links currently open the providers' own sites and earn us nothing yet.

Getting there and getting around

Koh Mak has no airport; most visitors reach a mainland pier near Trat and take a boat of about 50 minutes. The button opens the 12Go Bangkok to Koh Mak page for the van and catamaran combination; check the pier on your ticket (hotels name Laem Ngop, Boonsiri and 12Go use Laem Sok), the departure time and the luggage rules before you book. Our Koh Mak guide lists the sources and the places where they disagree.

Affiliate disclosure: these links may earn us a commission if you book, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we write.

Before you book

  • Open the map link for the area and then check the hotel's exact pin. A neighbourhood name can cover a wide area.
  • Check the final rate with tax, payment timing, cancellation terms and what the room includes.
  • If arriving late, confirm the check-in method and the last transport that actually runs.
  • Koh Mak has no ATM according to Wikivoyage and koh-mak.com; ask your hotel about card payment and bring cash from the mainland.
  • Koh Mak Campus (kohmakcampus.com) offers coworking with accommodation, but its stay page says it does not accommodate short-term tourists, so we do not list it.
  • Check seasonal closures and boat schedules with the hotel, especially from June to October when koh-mak.com says services between Koh Mak, Koh Chang and Koh Kood stop.

FAQ

Where should first-time visitors stay on Koh Mak?

Ao Kao is the practical choice: koh-mak.com says most resorts line the beach and small restaurants and shops are on the road behind it. For sunsets and a long beach look at Ao Suan Yai; for quiet, the east shore.

Is there nightlife on Koh Mak?

Very little. Seavana's FAQ says some bars stay open until midnight to 2 AM and most are chilled bars. If you want a lively bar scene, Koh Chang has far more.

Which hotels have a pool?

Seavana, Koh Mak Resort, Mira Montra, Makathanee, Koh Mak Retreat, Cococape, Good Time and White Sand mention a pool on their sites, and Islanda lists five Pool Terrace rooms. Lazy Day, Little Moon Villa and Baan Koh Mak did not mention one on the pages we checked.

Can I bring a pet?

Koh Mak Resort's policy page says no pets are allowed. The other hotels did not state a pet policy on the pages we checked, so ask before you book.

Do I need to book ahead?

Baan Koh Mak warns against arriving without a room in the high season, which it lists as 1 October to 31 May, and White Sand takes direct bookings only with a five-night minimum. In low season you may find more choice, but some places close.

How do I get from the pier to my hotel?

Several hotels say they pick guests up from the pier if you give them your boat time in advance, for example Baan Koh Mak and White Sand, and Makathanee and Koh Mak Resort have their own piers. Confirm which pier your boat uses.

Are hotel prices shown here?

No. Rates change with dates and room type, and we could not verify a current rate. The links on each card open a booking search with your own dates.

Is the Booking.com link live for every hotel?

It opens a search for the hotel name, but a hotel may not be listed. White Sand says it takes direct bookings only, so use its own website.
