The Humble Administrator's Garden (拙政园) is one of the UNESCO-listed classical gardens of Suzhou and the one most visitors see first. Secondary sources give the adult ticket as CNY 80 in the busy months and CNY 70 off-peak. We could not open the garden's own website, so those prices are not confirmed at source. The one official fact we can check is the temporary 06:45 opening announced by the Suzhou government, which ended on 7 October 2026. Facts were checked on 16 and 17 October 2026.
For the two-city overview and getting from Hangzhou see the Hangzhou and Suzhou guide. Hotels are in where to stay. The lake and temple in Hangzhou are on the West Lake and Lingyin Temple pages. Entry rules and payments are on the China hub.

Ticket prices, checked 17 October 2026
Figures are in Chinese yuan, from secondary sources.
| Category | Price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Adult, peak months (Apr, May, Jul, Aug, Sep, Oct) | CNY 80 | Suzhou Bendibao (not official), Wander in China (commercial) |
| Adult, off-peak (Jan, Feb, Mar, Jun, Nov, Dec) | CNY 70 | Suzhou Bendibao, Wander in China |
| Half price, peak / off-peak | CNY 45 / CNY 35 | Suzhou Bendibao (we did not check who qualifies) |
| Children up to 1.4 m or aged 6 and under | Free | Suzhou Bendibao |
| Wikivoyage | CNY 80, and CNY 70 off-peak (Aug 2024 data) | Not official |
| Night tickets | CNY 198 (Tue to Thu) and CNY 228 (Fri to Sun and holidays), 2025 data | Suzhou Bendibao; not 2026 data and we did not check that night openings still run |
Where sources disagree: Suzhou Bendibao and Wikivoyage agree on CNY 80 and CNY 70. China Highlights, a tour seller's page with no date, gives CNY 70 from 16 April to 30 October and CNY 50 from 31 October to 15 April, which does not match. Some search results define the peak months differently. We kept the figures where two independent sources agree and have not tested them against a real ticket. If you visit in a switching month such as June or November, look at the price in the booking system before you pay.
Opening hours
| Item | What we found | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Temporary early opening | 19 Jun to 7 Oct 2026: opens 06:45 instead of 07:30, the first time since it opened to the public in 1952. The Suzhou Garden Museum kept its usual hours | Suzhou government notice via The Paper, and People's Daily (official) |
| Normal hours | 07:30 opening is the usual time per the notice above | Official notice |
| Closing time (1) | 17:30 under a summer timetable of 06:45 to 17:30 | Suzhou Bendibao (not official) |
| Closing time (2) | Another article gives 07:30 to 18:00 (1 Mar to 31 Oct) and 07:30 to 17:30 (1 Nov to end of Feb) | Suzhou Bendibao (2023 article) |
| Last tickets | Peak season ticket sales stop at 17:00 and the garden clears at 17:30; off-peak 16:30 and 17:00 | Suzhou Bendibao |
| Wikivoyage | 07:30 to 17:30 | Not official |
The official notice gives only the opening time. Closing times from secondary sources do not match (17:30, 18:00, earlier in winter), and they come from articles of different years. If you plan an afternoon visit, treat 16:30 as the latest safe arrival at the gate and check the booking system. Suzhou Museum is next door; Wikivoyage says it is open Tuesday to Sunday 09:00 to 17:00 (not official).

Booking and entry
The secondary sources contradict each other. The same Suzhou Bendibao article says both that you need no booking and can buy at the gate, and that visitors must book by real name online and carry ID. Some search results say the garden stopped selling tickets at the gate. We therefore have no official confirmation either way.
- We suggest you book ahead and carry the original passport. A secondary source says online tickets are valid only on the date booked and cannot be refunded after use.
- The booking channel Suzhou Bendibao points to is Suzhou's tourism platform (cloud.sz-trip.com). A commercial travel site (Wander in China) says the Suzhou Garden Tourism booking has an English version, accepts "passport" as the ID type and requires the original passport, not a photo. A third-party guide (Cities Insider) mentions a WeChat mini program called "苏州园林 官微". We did not test any of these, and we found no official text on foreign-visitor booking.
- Suzhou Museum is next door. Wikivoyage mentions reservations at its main branch, which suggests it may need a separate booking. Wander in China says a museum reservation does not cover the garden. Check the museum's own site.
What to see inside
Wikivoyage says the garden is in the north-east corner of the old city (Dongbei Street) and has a collection of penjing (bonsai-style landscapes) at the far end from the main entrance, worth walking to. Other features named in the Commons captions include the Mountain View Tower, a lotus pavilion, a hall, and a view of Beisi (North Temple) Pagoda from within the garden.

Nearby, Wikivoyage lists the Lion Grove Garden and Suzhou Museum, designed by I.M. Pei. Pingjiang Road runs south from here toward the centre. See the Hangzhou and Suzhou guide for the districts and the other World Heritage gardens.
Getting there
Wikivoyage says that from Suzhou railway station you can walk into the old city in 20 to 30 minutes, and several buses run toward Guanqian Street and Ganjiang Road in about 15 to 20 minutes. We have not checked a direct route to the garden. The Mercure Suzhou City Center hotel writes that it is a 10-minute drive to Suzhou Museum and the garden (its Accor page misspells the garden's name slightly). If you stay near Pingjiang Road, the hotel writes about 100 m to Pingjiang Road, but we have not checked the walk to the garden. Wikivoyage warns that pavements in the old city are narrow.
Planning the visit
Our suggestion, not official guidance. Arrive when the gates open, spend about 1.5 to 2 hours in the garden, then add Suzhou Museum and Pingjiang Road the same day. Chinese holidays are busier than normal. If you want other gardens, the World Heritage list on Wikivoyage is summarised in the main guide.
Money and links on this page
The booking box on this page opens a provider's search page for Suzhou tickets and tours, as of 17 October 2026. A ticket bought through a provider may cost more than the gate price, and we have not compared them. We have no registered affiliate link for Suzhou and earn no commission from it yet. Tickets bought directly from the garden's channel do not go through us.

Frequently asked questions
How much is the Humble Administrator's Garden ticket?
Per secondary sources, CNY 80 in the peak months (April, May, July to October) and CNY 70 off-peak. China Highlights gives CNY 70 and CNY 50 instead. We did not confirm either at the garden's own site.
Do I need to book in advance?
The secondary sources disagree. We suggest booking ahead and carrying your original passport. Check the booking system before the day.
What time does it open and close?
From 19 June to 7 October 2026 it opened at 06:45 per the official notice, and normally opens at 07:30. Closing times in secondary sources differ: 17:30 or 18:00. Check before you go.
How long should I spend there?
About 1.5 to 2 hours in the garden (our suggestion), and half a day with the museum.
How do I get there from Suzhou railway station?
Wikivoyage says to walk 20 to 30 minutes into the old city or take a bus. We did not check the direct route to the garden, so use a map or a taxi to the entrance.
What are the other World Heritage gardens?
Wikivoyage lists 9, including the Lingering Garden (留园), the Master of the Nets Garden (网师园) and the Lion Grove (狮子林). Each charges its own fee and we have not checked them on official sites.
Is it free for children?
Suzhou Bendibao says children up to 1.4 m or aged 6 and under enter free. Check the rule at the gate.
How this guide compares
We read China Highlights' garden page and Wander in China's garden guide on 17 October 2026 (Travel China Guide's page returned a 404). China Highlights is a tour seller's page with no date, quoting CNY 70 and CNY 50 and 07:30 to 17:30, and says nothing on booking. Wander in China, a commercial site, gives CNY 80 and CNY 70 and describes real-name passport booking, but admits release timing is described as "historically". This page shows each figure with its source, flags the contradictions, records the official 06:45 notice and its end date, and says plainly that we could not confirm the price at source.
