Lumphini Park is Bangkok's best-known city park, a 360-rai green space (about 57 hectares) beside Rama IV Road, with a lake, a running path and a population of wild monitor lizards. The short answer: entry is free, the park is open every day from 04:30, and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) extended closing time to 22:00 in August 2022. You can reach it by MRT Blue Line or by BTS Silom Line, and most visitors spend one to two hours.

We could not open the BMA's own park pages on 2026-10-16 (the park-office website did not load), so the hours and running figures below come from BMA statements quoted in Thai news and from Wikipedia. We show where they disagree.

Heads up

The BMA changed the opening hours in 2022 and the park was being renovated for its 100th year in 2025 and 2026, so some paths or buildings may be fenced off. Treat 04:30-22:00 as the best current reading as of 2026-10-16 and read the signs at the gate.

The extension was a trial at three busy parks (Lumphini, Chatuchak and Benchasiri), according to Infoquest. Thai Wikipedia also records a centenary celebration in late April 2026 after landscape work in 2025 and 2026, a dog park that opened on 7 February 2026, and a hawker centre along Ratchadamri Road.

What to do in the park

  • Walk or run the loop. Locals run before sunrise and after work. The 2019 BMA plan counts about 2.5 km of running track and 9.25 km of paths in all. We did not measure it, and renovation may have changed the surface.
  • See the Rama VI monument. Thai Wikipedia places the bronze statue of King Rama VI at gate 4 and says it was unveiled in 1942. It is the easiest landmark to meet a friend at.
  • Rent a swan paddle boat. English Wikipedia lists swan boats on the lake for 40 baht per 30 minutes. Confirm the price at the boat stand.
  • Watch the morning exercise. Groups practise tai chi and dance on the lawns and in the pavilions, and the park is also known for open-air ballroom dancing at the Lumpinisthan building (Thai Wikipedia).
  • Catch an event. English Wikipedia lists concerts on Sundays from January to April (17:30-20:00) and monk-led Dharma activities on the last Sunday of the month; it says 07:00-09:00, while Thai Wikipedia says 06:00-08:00. Check which time applies on the day.
  • Cross to the next park. Thai Wikipedia mentions a green bridge linking Lumphini with Benchakitti Park.

Thai Wikipedia describes the park as two halves: a quieter, shaded northern "passive" zone and a busier southern "active" zone with playgrounds, a library and the youth centre.

Monitor lizards: what is true and how to stay safe

Lumphini is famous for its Asian water monitors, large lizards that swim in the lake and sunbathe on the paths. English Wikipedia says about 400 live in the park and that the BMA ran a capture-and-relocation programme in 2016 to control numbers. The Daily News reported on 30 April 2025 that 100 to 200 visitors a day ask park staff where to find them, and that the BMA put a monitor lizard statue beside the Suan Bueng waterfront as a photo spot.

We found no BMA notice on feeding or distance, so the rules below are our own common-sense advice, not official rules:

  1. Keep a few metres away and never touch or chase one. They are wild animals with claws and teeth.
  2. Do not feed them. Bread and snacks teach them to approach people.
  3. Do not leave food in an open bag on the grass, and keep small children and pets close.
  4. Give them the path. If one is crossing, wait.

When to go

Open-air exercise is a morning activity because of heat and humidity; the 04:30 opening time suits runners and early walkers. Evenings are cooler and busier, and the 22:00 closing time makes a sunset walk easy. Rain can flood paths; the Thai Post article notes that some surfaces collect large puddles after rain. See best time to visit Bangkok for the seasons.

Combine it with other Bangkok sights

Lumphini is on the modern, central side of the city, away from the temples. Pair it with a rail ride and a meal in Silom, and keep the old city for another day: Grand Palace, Wat Pho and the Bangkok 3-day plan. If you want a livelier old-town evening, read our Khao San Road guide.

Safety and small cautions

  • Heat. Carry water if you walk after 09:00.
  • Night. Stay on lit paths and use the park late only in company; this is our general advice.
  • Lizards. See the section above.
  • Emergency numbers. 191 police, 1669 medical, 1155 Tourist Police. See Thailand safety, scams and health.

There is no ticket or tour to buy for the park, so the booking box on this page is only for hotels: it opens Bangkok stay searches, not a listing next to the park, and it is the one registered link that fits. The park sits between Silom, Sathorn and Ratchadamri, all on rail lines. For areas and sourced hotel cards, see where to stay in Bangkok, and for the whole city see the Bangkok hub.

FAQ

Is Lumphini Park free?

Yes. Thai Post's 2020 article says the park is open to the public free of charge, and the guides we read agree. Activities such as boat hire are separate.

What time does Lumphini Park open and close?

BMA-reported hours are 04:30 to 22:00 every day since 1 August 2022, repeated by the Daily News in April 2025. English Wikipedia still lists 21:00, so check the gate signs.

How do I get to Lumphini Park by MRT or BTS?

Take the MRT Blue Line to Silom or Lumphini station, or the BTS Silom Line to Sala Daeng or Ratchadamri. Sala Daeng Exit 5 is about a five-minute walk, according to Lovethailand.

Are the monitor lizards dangerous?

They are wild animals and can bite or scratch, so keep your distance and do not feed or touch them. The BMA published no safety rules that we could find; this is our own advice.

How long is the running track?

A 2019 BMA renovation report counts about 2.5 km of running track. Renovation may have changed the surface, so look at the paths on arrival.

Can I cycle in Lumphini Park?

English Wikipedia says cycling is allowed only from 10:00 to 15:00. We found no BMA page confirming it, so follow the signs at the gate.

Is there an entrance fee for the swan boats?

There is no park fee, but the boats are paid. English Wikipedia lists 40 baht for 30 minutes; confirm at the stand.
