Bangkok and Phuket are about 840 kilometres apart by road, so the right choice depends on whether you value time, price or an overnight journey. Flying is usually simplest for a short holiday. Coaches provide a direct ground connection, while the train is an indirect option that can suit travellers who want to break up the trip or include another southern stop. There is no railway station on Phuket island.

This guide compares the main options and explains how to plan each end of the journey. For the wider city picture, see Bangkok intercity transport; once you arrive, use the Phuket hub and Phuket airport transport guide.

Schedules, fares and routes change. The ranges below are broad planning estimates, approximate as of 2026; check the named operator's current timetable, fare and terms before travelling.

Choose your route

OptionTypical door-to-door timeApproximate one-way fareWorks well forMain trade-off
Direct flightAbout 4-6 hours including airport timeTHB 1,000-4,500, plus any paid bagsShort stays and travellers connecting from another flightAirport transfers, check-in and baggage fees add time and cost
Direct coachAbout 12-14 hoursTHB 800-1,800Travellers prioritising a single ground ticket or overnight travelLong sitting time; road traffic and rest stops affect arrival
Train plus road transferAbout 13-18 hours or moreTHB 700-2,500 depending on class and onward transferTravellers who want a sleeper or a stop in Surat ThaniSeveral separate legs; no train runs to Phuket
Private carRoughly 10-12 hours driving, before breaksHighly variable; often several thousand baht per vehicleGroups sharing the vehicle and stopping en routeFatigue, tolls, fuel and one-way return arrangements

Times and prices are not guarantees. Airfares vary sharply by date, booking lead time and baggage. Coach fares vary by operator and seat class. Rail-plus-road cost depends on the train class, the station used and the final transfer. Compare the full trip rather than only the headline fare.

Tip

For a three- or four-day Phuket visit, a flight usually gives the most usable holiday time. For an overnight coach or sleeper, compare the arrival time with hotel check-in and your first planned activity.

Flying: the practical choice for most short trips

Direct flights connect Bangkok with Phuket International Airport (HKT). Services may depart from either Suvarnabhumi (BKK) or Don Mueang (DMK), depending on the airline and schedule. These airports are on different sides of Bangkok; never assume a domestic flight leaves from the airport used for your international arrival. Check the airport code on every booking and allow a generous transfer margin if changing airports.

The flight itself is roughly 1.5 hours. Add the trip from your accommodation to the departure airport, the airline's recommended check-in time, boarding, baggage collection and the ride from HKT to your accommodation. A realistic door-to-door estimate is often four to six hours, and can be longer in heavy city traffic or with a tight connection.

Compare baggage, seat and payment fees as well as the headline fare. Read change and cancellation conditions, especially if your international arrival and domestic flight are on separate tickets; a delay on one ticket may not protect the other.

From Phuket airport, onward choices include airport bus services, metered or fixed-fare taxis, app-based rides where available, and pre-arranged hotel transfers. The right option depends on the time of arrival, your luggage and where you are staying. Patong, Kata, Karon, Phuket Old Town and the northern beaches are separate destinations with different road times. See the airport transport guide before choosing a hotel transfer.

Overnight coach: one ticket by road

Coaches to Phuket generally depart from Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal, also called Sai Tai Mai. The terminal is outside central Bangkok, so plan a taxi or other surface transfer and allow extra time for peak traffic. A booking confirmation should state the exact terminal, counter or boarding point; do not rely on the phrase “Bangkok bus station” alone.

The trip commonly takes around 12-14 hours, though traffic, weather, roadworks and scheduled stops can change the arrival time. Overnight departures can save a hotel night, but they do not guarantee restful sleep. Compare seat configuration and class, whether food or a rest stop is included, and the operator's baggage allowance. Keep medication, valuables, documents and a warm layer with you rather than in the luggage hold.

Some services arrive at Phuket Bus Terminal 2. Check whether your ticket includes a local transfer: the terminal may be far from your beach hotel and onward transport can be limited late at night. Confirm inclusions and any voucher exchange before departure.

Use the Transport Co., Ltd. site and the named coach operator for current service information. If buying through a booking marketplace, verify the actual carrier, pickup terminal, luggage terms, arrival point and cancellation rules on the final ticket. Marketplaces can make comparisons easier, but their service fees and ticket conditions may differ from direct booking.

Note

An overnight coach reaches Phuket by road. “Bus and ferry” combinations are generally relevant to island routes beyond Phuket, not a ferry crossing to Phuket itself.

Train and road: a slower alternative

Trains run south from Bangkok, but they do not reach Phuket. A common rail-based plan is to take a State Railway of Thailand service to Surat Thani and continue by bus or other road transfer across the peninsula. The train destination and the transfer point matter: Surat Thani station is inland, not at a Phuket-bound pier or on the island. Allow enough time between separately booked legs, and confirm where the onward coach departs.

This can suit travellers who want a sleeper berth, prefer rail or plan a stop in southern Thailand. It is less straightforward than a direct coach: separate tickets mean a missed connection can disrupt the itinerary. Leave a generous transfer buffer, especially when you must collect luggage.

Check train availability, station and class on the State Railway of Thailand channels. Check the onward bus with its actual operator. Timetables, ticket release dates and service patterns can change, so confirm them for your travel date rather than relying on a saved screenshot or an old itinerary.

Driving the route

The road journey is roughly 840 kilometres and commonly takes around 10-12 hours before breaks. Duration depends on traffic and road conditions. A private transfer avoids vehicle changes but costs more than a coach. For a rental, confirm one-way return availability, mileage limits, insurance excess, tolls and drop-off hours.

Do not plan the entire distance as one uninterrupted drive. Share the driving only when every driver is licensed for the vehicle and insured under the rental agreement. Take breaks, avoid driving when tired and check the route and weather before setting out. Visitors considering a rental after arrival can compare local transport with the practical points in Phuket car rental and eSIM.

A simple decision guide

Your priorityStart by comparingPlanning note
Save timeDirect flights from BKK and DMKInclude airport travel and baggage fees in the comparison
Keep the ground fare downDirect overnight coachesCheck the terminal, seat class and late-night arrival transfer
Sleep while travellingSleeper train plus road connectionLeave a generous connection buffer and verify both tickets
Make stops along the wayTrain or a self-planned road itineraryAdd overnight stays instead of treating the trip as a race
Travel as a groupCoach seats versus a private vehicleDivide a car quote by passengers and include tolls and one-way fees

Look at the complete itinerary. A flight may need a cross-city airport transfer; a coach may arrive when local transport is limited; and rail needs more coordination. The best value fits your dates, group and available time.

Sample travel-day plan

For a flight, travel to the correct Bangkok airport with traffic allowance and keep essentials in your cabin bag. On arrival, choose onward transport based on your hotel location. Avoid scheduling a non-refundable tour or long drive immediately after a late arrival.

For a night coach, check the rest-stop plan and keep an arrival bag accessible. Arrange a transfer in advance for an unusually early or late arrival, confirming the pickup place and price with the provider.

For the train connection, save both confirmations offline, note the station names and leave contingency time. If tickets are separate, check what happens if the first service is delayed.

Costs to include

Use these broad one-way ranges as a starting point, approximate as of 2026:

Cost itemPlanning range
Direct flight ticketTHB 1,000-4,500 before optional baggage and seat fees
Airport travel in BangkokTHB 100-800, depending on mode and distance
HKT onward shared or public transportTHB 100-300 where service and route fit
HKT taxi or private transferTHB 500-1,500 or more by destination and time
Direct coach seatTHB 800-1,800
Train plus onward road legTHB 700-2,500 or more by class and connection
Private car or transferSeveral thousand baht per vehicle; obtain a dated quote

These figures are estimates, not fare quotations. Check current prices with the airline, railway, coach company, airport or transfer operator. Consider whether the fare includes checked bags, terminal transfer, seat choice, meals, local transport and taxes. A shared taxi may cost more per person than a bus, while saving time for a group.

Budget

Compare the full door-to-door amount: Bangkok hotel to departure point, ticket and add-ons, Phuket terminal or airport to accommodation, and any overnight stay needed for an inconvenient arrival.

What to check before departure

  • Confirm the airport code or bus terminal on the current ticket.
  • Check departure time, check-in deadline, luggage allowance and ticket change policy with the operator.
  • Keep onward transfer details and accommodation address available offline.
  • For rail-plus-road journeys, verify the station, transfer location and connection buffer.
  • Check weather and road conditions before long-distance travel; sea conditions are relevant to onward boat trips, not the Bangkok-to-Phuket land route.
  • Carry essential medication, valuables, travel documents and a phone charger with you.
  • Use seat belts where provided and take breaks on long road journeys.
  • Keep emergency numbers handy: 191 for police, 1669 for medical emergencies and 1155 for Tourist Police. Consider travel insurance that covers medical care and your planned activities.

FAQ

What is the fastest way to travel from Bangkok to Phuket?

A direct flight is fastest, at roughly 1.5 hours in the air. Airport journeys, check-in, baggage and Phuket ground transport often bring the door-to-door trip to around four to six hours.

Is there a train from Bangkok to Phuket?

No. Take a southbound train to a mainland station such as Surat Thani, then continue by road. Confirm the exact station and onward transfer before booking.

How long does the Bangkok-to-Phuket bus take?

Plan for around 12-14 hours, with variation from traffic, weather, service pattern and stops. Confirm the operator's estimate and arrival terminal for your travel date.

Which Bangkok airport should I use?

Use the airport code printed on your airline booking. Phuket flights may operate from Suvarnabhumi (BKK) or Don Mueang (DMK); the airports are separate and a cross-city transfer takes time.

Is the overnight bus cheaper than flying?

It can be, especially when flight prices are high or baggage is extra, but compare the full cost. Include travel to Sai Tai Mai, any arrival transfer and the value of the time spent travelling.

Can I rent a car in Bangkok and return it in Phuket?

Possibly, depending on the rental company and vehicle. Confirm one-way availability, return location, fees, mileage and insurance terms directly before booking; do not assume a standard rental includes an intercity drop-off.
