The Jim Thompson House Museum is the Bangkok home and Asian art collection of Jim Thompson, the American businessman known as the "Thai Silk King", and it is one of the few places in central Bangkok where you walk through traditional Thai teak houses with a guide. The short answer: the museum's own visitor page lists daily opening hours of 10:00 to 17:00, an adult ticket of 250 baht, and a guided tour that is compulsory for the main house, offered in five languages. The BTS National Stadium station (exit 1) is the nearest stop, and a visit takes about an hour to an hour and a half.

We read the museum's official site on 2026-10-16. The figures below come from there. Several travel blogs still show older prices and later closing times, so check the official page before you go.

Online tickets: the visitor page says tickets are also sold through authorised booking partners and names Viator and GetYourGuide, and the home page adds that if online slots are full, walk-in tours are still available during the day. The home page also carries a notice about online sales starting on 8 September 2026, so the wording is not fully consistent. We do not sell Jim Thompson tickets: the Klook button on this page opens a different Bangkok product (see Costs below). For the museum's own current rules, use the official page.

Heads up

The museum's own page warns visitors to ignore strangers who say the museum is closed for half a day on a holiday and offer to take you elsewhere. The museum says it has no connection with such offers.

What you get in the visit

The main house is a group of traditional Thai teak houses joined together beside the Saen Saep canal. Wikipedia's summary says Jim Thompson began the project in 1958, that the house was finished in 1959 from six Thai-style houses plus other old structures, and that he disappeared in Malaysia in 1967; the foundation that bears his name has run the house since then. The collection includes Southeast Asian Buddha images, Thai paintings on cloth and wood, secular art from Thailand, Burma, Cambodia and Laos, and blue-and-white Chinese porcelain.

What the visit usually looks like:

  1. Buy a ticket at the counter and wait for the next guide in your language. The guide leads the whole route through the main house.
  2. The guided walk takes you through the main house and its art collection. There are several stairways and no elevators.
  3. The grounds. The compound has garden areas and a spirit house shrine, as the photo below shows; ask staff which outdoor areas you may explore on your own.
  4. Shops and food. The compound also has retail and food outlets run separately from the museum; check their own hours.

Photo and bag rules

The museum lets you take photos inside the main house but forbids flash, selfies, individual (posed) photos and video recording. Shoes must come off before the house, and bags larger than 20 cm go into lockers that are monitored by CCTV. The compound is smoke-free.

The Jim Thompson Art Center

The Art Center sits in the same compound, and has its own website, exhibitions and ticket rules. As of 2026-10-16 its site lists 50 baht for the Art Center only, and 250 baht for the House Museum and Art Center together, open daily 10:00-18:00. The current exhibition is "And Still, Another After", from 10 October 2026 to 29 March 2027. Check the Art Center site for current prices; do not assume the museum ticket always includes it.

Getting there

The official visitor page names the BTS (National Stadium exit 1). The Art Center's own access page also lists a boat and ride-hailing option:

FromRoute
BTS Silom line (change at Siam from the Sukhumvit line)BTS to National Stadium (note: it is a BTS station, not MRT), exit 1, then walk about 3 minutes per the Art Center page
Saen Saep canal boatTo Hua Chang pier, then walk about 3 minutes per the Art Center page
Taxi or ride-hailingShow the written address: 6 Soi Kasemsan 2, Rama 1 Road; Grab, Bolt and Muvmi are listed by the Art Center
From the airportSee Bangkok airport to the city for rail and taxi options, then change to the BTS

The old-city temples are on the other side of the river, so combine this with something in the Siam and Pathumwan area, not with the Grand Palace. For temples, see the Grand Palace guide, the Wat Pho guide and the Wat Arun guide.

A half-day plan in Siam

  1. 10:00: Be at the ticket counter at opening to get the first tour and avoid waiting.
  2. 11:30: Walk through the garden and, if you want, the Art Center.
  3. 12:30: Lunch around Siam or the National Stadium area.
  4. 14:00: Shopping and air-conditioned malls, or the BTS to another part of the city.

This fits as a rainy-afternoon block in the Bangkok 3-day plan. For a different kind of day, see Chatuchak Weekend Market and Bangkok day trips.

Best time to go

Arrive at opening, because tours are guided in groups and later slots can be full. The museum is partly open-air and the stairs and verandas get hot in the afternoon, so mornings are more comfortable. Our best time to visit Bangkok page covers the rainy months, and Thailand best time by region covers the rest of the country.

For other Bangkok tickets, see Bangkok attraction tickets. The Klook button in the booking boxes on this page opens the King Power Mahanakhon SkyWalk page, a skyline ticket and not a Jim Thompson House ticket, because it is the Bangkok attraction we are registered for. Safety and small cautions

  • Fake closure stories. The museum itself warns about strangers who say it is closed; ignore them and walk to the gate.
  • Stairs. The museum says the main house has several stairways and no elevators, so contact the museum about access before you go.
  • Valuables. Lockers are for bags over 20 cm; keep phone and wallet with you.
  • Emergency numbers. 191 police, 1669 medical, 1155 Tourist Police. See Thailand safety, scams and health.
