Phuket International Airport (HKT) is in the north of the island, and most hotels are 30 to 70 minutes away depending on traffic. There is no train or metro, so you will choose between a taxi, ride-hailing, a shared or private transfer, an airport bus, or a rental car. This guide compares each option by cost, speed and convenience, and gives you a short checklist for arriving without stress. For broader planning, see the Phuket hub.

Distances and typical travel times

Times depend heavily on traffic, particularly in the late afternoon and on rainy days.

Official airport taxis

The airport has taxi counters inside or just outside the arrivals hall, where you tell the staff your destination and receive a fixed price for the trip, usually per car rather than per person. Rates differ by area and by vehicle size. This is the simplest option, because you do not need to negotiate, and the staff can issue a receipt or slip with the driver details. Keep the slip until you reach your hotel.

Cautions. Do not accept offers from people who approach you inside the terminal. They are not part of the official system, and prices can be much higher. If a driver wants a different price after you have agreed one, ask to see the official slip or request another taxi.

Ride-hailing

Ride-hailing apps operate in Phuket, but local rules and pick-up arrangements, particularly at the airport, can change. Some drivers may ask you to meet at a designated spot away from the main taxi rank. As of 2026, check the app's airport instructions before you land. Fares and surge pricing vary by time of day. Ride-hailing in Phuket is often more expensive than in Bangkok, and availability can be limited in some beach areas late at night.

Pre-booked transfers

Private transfers can be booked online before you travel, through your hotel or through a transfer marketplace. A driver usually waits in the arrivals hall with your name, and the price is agreed in advance. This helps if you are arriving late at night, travelling with children or carrying surfboards or dive gear. Read the cancellation and flight-delay policy and confirm whether the price is per vehicle or per person. Compare a few options on the provider's own page, and treat reviews as a guide rather than a guarantee.

Airport bus and public options

Phuket has limited public transport. A bus service runs from the airport to Phuket Town, and there are other lines to some beach areas operated by a local smart-bus brand. As of 2026, check the operator's website for current routes, timetables and fares, because they change. Buses are the cheapest option, but they are slower and may not stop near your hotel, so you may need a short taxi at the end. They suit travellers with light luggage and flexible time.

Rental cars

Several car-hire desks are available at the airport, and you can pick up a car on arrival if you booked ahead. Driving is on the left in Thailand. If you plan to drive, read the Phuket car rental and eSIM guide for licence, insurance and safety information.

Note

If you arrive late at night, check in advance that your hotel accepts late check-in and that your transfer or taxi will be available at that hour.

Arrival checklist

  1. Complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) if it applies to you, and check the current entry requirements on official sources. See Thailand for an overview.
  2. Get mobile data. Buy a local SIM at the airport or install an eSIM before landing. See the car rental and eSIM guide.
  3. Withdraw or exchange some baht. Airport ATMs and exchange counters are available, though rates are often better in town.
  4. Save your hotel's address in Thai and English, and its phone number.
  5. Agree on the price before you get in a taxi, or use the official counter or a pre-booked transfer.
  6. Check your luggage at the carousel and keep valuables with you.
Tip

If your first night is in a beach area far from the airport and you arrive in the evening, build in extra time. Evening traffic through Patong and over the hills to Kata can add noticeable delay.

Leaving Phuket: getting back to the airport

Plan for at least 2 to 3 hours before an international flight, and more in peak season. Allow extra time from the southern beaches because of traffic. Many hotels can arrange a taxi or private transfer the day before. If you take a ride-hailing car, book early for a morning flight.

Moving on from the airport

Some travellers continue to other destinations without staying in Phuket. Ferries and boats connect Phuket with Phi Phi and other islands, and road transport reaches Krabi and Khao Lak. See the Koh Phi Phi hub, Krabi and Khao Lak for details. Once settled, see the Phuket 3-day plan for how to spend your time.

Safety and scams

  • Use official taxis or booked services, not unsolicited touts.
  • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash at the airport.
  • Do not hand your passport to anyone as a deposit for a rental or tour.
  • For emergencies, call 191 for police, 1669 for medical emergencies, or 1155 for the Tourist Police.
Heads up

If a taxi driver refuses to use the meter or quotes a price far above the airport counter rate, use the official counter or a booked transfer instead. Report serious problems to the Tourist Police on 1155.
