Thailand's entry rules have moved more in the past two years than in the previous decade: a long visa-exemption stay was introduced in 2024, a digital arrival card replaced the paper form in 2025, and the visa-exemption scheme was restructured again in 2026. Because of that, this guide explains the concepts and where to verify them rather than promising a fixed rule. Treat everything below as general information as of October 2026 and confirm your own nationality's position with the official sources listed at the end.
The three ways in: a concept overview
Most visitors enter Thailand in one of three ways.
| Route | Who it is for | How it works | Where to confirm |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visa exemption | Passport holders of countries on the exemption list | No visa applied for in advance; you receive a permitted stay stamp on arrival, for tourism | Ministry of Foreign Affairs |
| Visa on arrival (VOA) | Passport holders of a smaller list of countries | Apply at the airport with documents, a photo and a fee; usually a shorter stay | Ministry of Foreign Affairs |
| e-Visa / embassy visa | Everyone else, or anyone staying longer or for a different purpose | Apply online or through an embassy before travel | thaievisa.go.th |
Visa exemption
Under this scheme, nationals of listed countries may enter without a visa for a fixed number of days. The length has changed over time. According to the TAT Newsroom, Thailand announced new rules in September 2026 under which 60 countries and territories receive a 30-day exemption limited to tourism, with a shorter exemption for a couple of nationalities and visa on arrival for a few more. People admitted before the change reportedly kept the stay granted at entry. Because lists and durations can be adjusted again, do not rely on a blog post, including this one, for your exact number of days. Check your nationality on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs site.
Visa on arrival
Visa on arrival is available only to nationals of certain countries and typically involves a fee payable in Thai baht cash at the airport, passport photos, proof of onward travel and proof of accommodation. It usually grants a shorter stay than visa exemption. Queues can be long at busy airports, so many visitors who are eligible to apply for an e-visa in advance do so.
e-Visa and longer-stay visas
Thailand's official e-visa portal is thaievisa.go.th. It handles tourist visas, and other categories such as long-stay and work-related visas. Fees and required documents (bank statements, flight bookings, accommodation proof) vary by category and nationality. Use only the .go.th address; copycat sites exist and charge extra. If you plan to stay for months, to work remotely, study, volunteer or retire, look at the specific visa categories on the official portal instead of repeatedly crossing borders on exemptions.
Tourist exemptions are for tourism. Working in Thailand, including some forms of unpaid work, without the right visa and work permit is illegal. If your plan goes beyond a holiday, check the visa category first.
The Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC)
The TDAC is an online form that replaced the paper TM6 arrival card for foreign nationals arriving by air, land or sea. It is not a visa and does not decide whether you may enter. It records your trip details for immigration, health and security purposes.
What you need to fill it in
- Passport details and nationality
- Flight number, or vehicle details, and arrival date
- First night's accommodation address in Thailand
- Your recent travel history (countries visited shortly before arrival)
- Basic contact details and a health declaration section where applicable
Timing
As of 2026, travellers are asked to submit the TDAC within the three days before arrival (counting the day of arrival). Submitting earlier than that window may not be possible. You receive a confirmation, usually by email with a QR code; save a copy offline or print it, because airport Wi-Fi is unreliable. Airlines may ask to see it at check-in.
Cost
The official TDAC site at tdac.immigration.go.th has been described as free of charge. A number of commercial sites offer to complete the form for a fee. That is not necessary for most people, and a typing error on a paid service can still cause problems. If you do use a third party, understand that you are paying for assistance, not for an official requirement.
Complete the TDAC from the .go.th address only. Bookmark it manually rather than clicking an advertisement in a search result.
Common mistakes
- Using a flight date that does not match your actual arrival, for example after a delayed or rebooked flight. Update the form if your date changes.
- Giving a vague accommodation address. Use the first hotel's full address and phone number from your booking.
- Leaving the form to the airport. It is possible on a phone, but the queue at the gate and slow data can turn it into a stressful experience.
- Mistyping the passport number, which can mismatch your document at the desk.
Checklist before you fly
- Passport validity. Many airlines enforce at least six months' validity from entry, and you need blank pages for the stamp.
- Right entry route for your nationality. Check the official lists, not hearsay.
- Onward or return ticket. Immigration officers may ask for proof that you will leave within the permitted stay, and airlines can refuse boarding without it.
- Accommodation details for at least the first night.
- TDAC confirmation saved offline.
- Funds. Officers may ask for proof of means. Historically a figure of THB 20,000 per person or THB 40,000 per family has been cited; confirm whether and how it applies to you.
- Travel insurance with medical cover; see Thailand safety, scams and health.
Immigration officers have discretion at the border. Repeated back-to-back exemption entries, no onward ticket, or unclear purpose can lead to questions or refusal.
Extending a stay and overstaying
If your permitted stay is about to end, a short extension may be available at an Immigration Bureau office, subject to a fee and the rules at the time. Check the Immigration Bureau site (immigration.go.th) for current procedures and the nearest office. Overstaying incurs a daily fine, can lead to detention and deportation, and can affect future entries, so do not leave it to the last day.
Customs and items to leave at home
Thailand has strict rules on certain items, which are worth a quick check before packing: e-cigarettes and vaping devices are prohibited, and officials have pursued offenders. Some medications, including some prescription painkillers and sleeping tablets, are controlled; carry them in original packaging with a doctor's letter. Cannabis rules have shifted in recent years, so do not assume anything is allowed. Check the Thai Customs Department and Food and Drug Administration pages if in doubt.

FAQ
Is the TDAC a visa?
No. It is an online arrival card that records your trip details. You still need to satisfy the visa or exemption rules for your nationality. Completing the TDAC does not guarantee entry.
How far in advance can I submit the TDAC?
As of 2026, the window is the three days before arrival, including the arrival day. Check the official page for any update.
Do children need a TDAC?
Yes, each traveller including children needs their own submission, though a family or group can usually be completed by one person. Use each person's own passport details.
How long can I stay without a visa?
It depends on your nationality and has changed in 2026. Reports from TAT indicate 30 days for many eligible countries from 15 September 2026, but you should confirm your own eligibility and duration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before you travel.
Can I get a visa on arrival if I am not on the exemption list?
Only nationals of specifically listed countries can. Everyone else should apply for a visa through thaievisa.go.th or an embassy before departure.
What if my flight is delayed or I change my arrival date?
Update the TDAC or submit a new one so the date matches your actual arrival. If in doubt, contact the Immigration Bureau through its official channels.
